The global population has increased the use of pharmaceutical compounds, emerging as contaminants. Due to their persistence in the environment, pharmaceutical residues have been detected in water and soil sources, causing adverse effects on ecosystems. Therefore, methods and techniques are necessary to degrade this pollution. An environmentally sustainable option is fungal remediation, which can decompose or degrade various xenobiotics. In this study, 30 phenanthrene-tolerant fungal isolates were analyzed to determine their potential for pharmaceutical degradation. Nine isolates were tolerant

We present phylogenetic analyses of the fruticose Ramalinaceae based on extensive collections from many parts of the world, with a special focus on the Vizcaíno deserts in north-western Mexico and the coastal desert in Namibia. We generate a four-locus DNA sequence dataset for accessions of Ramalina and two additional loci for Niebla and Vermilacinia. Four genera are strongly supported: the subcosmopolitan Ramalina, the new genus Namibialina endemic to SW Africa, and a duo formed by Niebla and Vermilacinia, endemic to the New World except the sorediate V. zebrina that disjunctly occurs in Nami

The order Chaetothyriales (Pezizomycotina, Ascomycetes) harbours obligatorily melanised fungi and includes numerous etiologic agents of chromoblastomycosis, phaeohyphomycosis and other diseases of vertebrate hosts. Diseases range from mild cutaneous to fatal cerebral or disseminated infections and affect humans and cold-blooded animals globally. In addition, Chaetothyriales comprise species with aquatic, rock-inhabiting, ant-associated, and mycoparasitic life-styles, as well as species that tolerate toxic compounds, suggesting a high degree of versatile extremotolerance. Arctic warming has coincided with dramatic changes in plant cover, but the impact that aboveground biomass shifts have on soil microbial communities and processes remains poorly understood. To address this, we investigated spatial patterns of soil microbes in relation to vegetation changes using a space-for-time approach in the high Arctic region of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. We collected and characterized 31 topsoil samples from three sites that differed in nutrient input, CO2 flux, soil chemistry, and plant cover. Pronounced vegetation differences were observed at fine spatial scales, including

Sarcosphaera crassa is an edible but deadly mushroom that is poisonous in its raw form. In this study, fatty acids profiles, total phenolic, along with in vitro antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities of baked and raw forms of S. crassa were reported for the first time. Linoleic acid (53.6%), oleic acid (24.2%), and palmitic acid (11.5%) were present in the highest amount in the baked sample, while oleic acid (50.5%), palmitic acid (22.4%) and linoleic acid (16.6%) were found in the raw petroleum ether extract (in phenolic equivalents, PEs). PE extracts of raw and baked samples exhibited

Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses, during a study on the biodiversity of the lichenized fungi family Arthoniaceae in Yunnan, China, three new species of Arthonia, Eremothecella, and Synarthonia (Arthonia yunnanensis sp. nov., A. pararubella sp. nov., Eremothecella pruinocarpa sp. nov.) and three new Chinese records (A. rubella, E. calamicola, Synarthonia inconspicua) were reported in this present study. A phylogenetic analysis using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference based on a two-gene dataset (mtSSU and RPB2) revealed that all these species form distinct independent cla

Spider-pathogenic fungi serve as critical regulators of spider populations in natural systems, playing irreplaceable roles in maintaining ecological balance and also serving as reservoirs of bioactive compounds. Despite recent taxonomic refinements at the generic level, their broader phylogenetic diversity remains significantly underrepresented compared to entomopathogenic fungi. In this study, we collected several novel spider-pathogenic fungi from various provinces in China and conducted comprehensive taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses. Based on integrated morphological characterization and

Ophiostomatoids are an ecological group of microfungi that commonly associate with bark and ambrosia beetles. In addition to being insect symbionts, they play significant ecological roles as plant pathogens and include species responsible for major forest tree diseases. Despite their ecological similarities, ophiostomatoid fungi are distributed across two distantly related orders, Microascales and Ophiostomatales, which include many additional fungi with diverse ecological lifestyles. Previous studies have typically focused on localised taxonomic issues or specific fungal ecologies. As a resul

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, particularly Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), poses a significant challenge to global public health. This study investigates the antibacterial potential of mycelial extract from the medicinal fungus Polycephalomyces nipponicus strain Cod-MK1201 against S. Typhi strain DMST 16122. The extract demonstrated significant inhibitory effects, with minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values of 3.12 mg/mL and 6.25 mg/mL, respectively. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed dose-de

The quest for bioactives that confer protection against chemotherapy induced cardio toxicity is a front-line area of cardio oncology research. Species of genus Morchella have been used in traditional medicine to treat asthma, wound healing, cough, cold, indigestion, excessive phlegm and breathlessness. M. esculenta, commonly known as guchhi in India is a highly prized culinary morel mushroom. Recent studies carried out in our laboratory have demonstrated significant cardioprotective effect of M. esculenta against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiotoxicity. Since bioactive extracts of morel mushr

This article documents the public availability of genome sequence data and assembled contigs representing the partial draft genome of Ophiocordyceps bispora. As one of the few known pathogens of fungus-farming termites, a draft genome of O. bispora represents the opportunity to further the understanding of disease and resistance in these complex termite societies. With the ongoing attempts to resolve the taxonomy of the Hypocralaean family, more genetic data will also help to shed light on the phylogenetic relationship between sexual and asexual life stages. Next generation sequence data is av

Lorchels, also known as false morels (Gyromitra sensu lato), are iconic due to their brain-shaped mushrooms and production of gyromitrin, a deadly mycotoxin. Molecular phylogenetic studies have hitherto failed to resolve deep-branching relationships in the lorchel family, Discinaceae, hampering our ability to settle longstanding taxonomic debates and to reconstruct the evolution of toxin production. We generated 75 draft genomes from cultures and ascomata (some collected as early as 1960), conducted phylogenomic analyses using 1542 single-copy orthologs to infer the early evolutionary history

Allergic disorders affect a substantial proportion of the global population, and current treatments often focus on symptom management rather than addressing the underlying immunological imbalances. Cordyceps militaris (L.) Fr. (C. militaris), an entomopathogenic fungus used in traditional East Asian medicine, contains bioactive compounds with potential immunomodulatory properties, including cordycepin and β-glucans. However, the anti-allergic effects of eri silkworm-derived C. militaris remain largely unknown. Here, we show that dietary supplementation with C. militaris extract (CME) reduces a

Bryoria (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota) is one of the dominant genera of hair lichens in western North America and is characteristic of high-elevation conifer forest ecosystems. In areas where Bryoria is abundant, it is common to find thalli in which the thalline filaments become conglutinated, forming brittle dead zones. After sampling Bryoria thalli across western Canada and the northwestern United States at different times of the year, we found that this dieback phenomenon is associated with the winter growth of a mold-forming basidiomycete. We report that this fungus belongs to Athelia (Athelia

BACKGROUND: The coelomycetes comprise a wide range of fungal species distributed in at least three different classes of the phylum Ascomycota. These are morphologically characterised by producing their conidia inside of fruiting bodies called pycnidia or acervuli, and only a reduced number of species are able to cause human infections. However, their identification in the clinical laboratory is often difficult, due to their few morphological features or because they remain sterile.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, three isolates of coelomycetes of clinical origin were phenotypical

Panax notoginseng is a famous medicinal plant in China. Under forest-based ecological cultivation, its roots harbor a diverse assemblage of endophytic fungi with unique community structures. Some of these fungi can enhance host resistance to diseases and environmental stresses, promote plant growth, and may influence the biosynthesis of medicinal saponins, thereby contributing to host fitness and metabolite regulation. In this study, a total of 188 endophytic fungal isolates were obtained from the roots of P. notoginseng cultivated under a forest-based ecological system in Yunnan Province, Chi

Hot spring microbial mats may host diverse and thermally adapted fungal communities. This study investigated the environmental factors controlling the seasonal distribution of culturable fungi at the Hammam Meskhoutine hot spring. Culture-dependent morphological and molecular analysis identified three Ascomycota species: Aspergillus fumigatus (311 colonies), Mycothermus thermophilus (79 colonies), and Thermomyces lanuginosus (5 colonies). Significant density fluctuations were observed for A. fumigatus (p < 0.001), which peaked in spring (13 × 105 CFU g- 1) before decreasing to a summer low (6

In tropical forests, there is a high diversity of parasites that use arthropods as resource, particularly arachnids. One of the most frequent groups of spiders' parasites in tropical forests are fungi of the genus Gibellula, for which a considerable knowledge gap remains in these environments. In this study, we present the description of a new species that infects spiders of the species Iguarima censoria (Anyphaenidae) in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Gibellula mineira sp. nov. We also described the prevalence of the new fungal species in the host spider population and evaluated whether the h

The species diversity of lichenized fungi remains largely underestimated, yet the number of species in the cetrarioid core group of Parmeliaceae has remained stable while generic delimitations have been highly debated. Here, we performed a partitioned phylogenetic analysis incorporating secondary structure characters of three ribosomal loci (ITS, mtSSU, and nuLSU) combined with comprehensive phenotypic traits. Based on the results, we hypothesized that a Large Temporal Band (29.0-35.0 Mya) may serve as a baseline threshold for most generic divergences, corresponding to late-Oligocene global co

BACKGROUND: Bat flies (Streblidae and Nycteribiidae) are among the most specialized families of the order Diptera. Members of these two related families have an obligate ectoparasitic lifestyle on bats, and they are known disease vectors for their hosts. However, bat flies have their own ectoparasites: fungi of the order Laboulbeniales. In Europe, members of the Nycteribiidae are parasitized by four species belonging to the genus Arthrorhynchus. We carried out a systematic survey of the distribution and fungus-bat fly associations of the genus in central Europe (Hungary, Romania).
RESULTS: We
