Celiac disease screening in southern and East Asia.

Until 1970s, celiac disease (CD) was considered to be an uncommon disease except in Western Europe. The global epidemiology of CD continues to evolve with improvement in the diagnostic tests, simplification of the diagnostic criteria and increase in awareness about the disease. The Asian region is currently at the crossroads of the frontier of knowledge and awareness of CD. In many Asian nations, CD is still considered to be either nonexistent or very rare. A notable exception is India, where CD has been well recognized, especially in the northern part, and 2 population-based studies have reve

Antibiotic resistance in the Middle East and Southern Asia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Despite global surveillance efforts, antibiotic resistance (ABR) is difficult to address in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In the absence of country-wide ABR surveillance data, peer-reviewed literature is the next most significant source of publicly available ABR data. Médecins Sans Frontières conducted this review in hopes of using the pooled findings to inform treatment choices in the studied countries where sufficient local ABR data are unavailable. METHODS: A systematic literature review reporting ABR rates for six infection sites in nine countries in the Middle E

Non-malarial febrile illness: a systematic review of published aetiological studies and case reports from Southern Asia and South-eastern Asia, 1980-2015.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of definitive diagnosis, healthcare providers are likely to prescribe empirical antibacterials to those who test negative for malaria. This problem is of critical importance in Southern Asia (SA) and South-eastern Asia (SEA) where high levels of antimicrobial consumption and high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance have been reported. To improve management and guide further diagnostic test development, better understanding is needed of the true causative agents of fever and their geographical variability. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of published lit

[The spread of Phlebotomus papatasi Scop., 1786 through the territory of Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan].

The data on distribution of the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) Phlebotomus papatasi through Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan are presented. The highest indices of density of this species (100 and more specimen per stick trap) were observed only in the Tejen oasis, rather high ones (1-10, 10-100) in the river valleys and at the foothill, and the lowest one (0.01-0.1)--over the desert territory where ZCL was not practically found. Using these data 2 maps were prepared. The first map shows the pattern of Ph. papatasi geographical distribution with the use of a relative

The zoonotic flaviviruses of southern, south-eastern and eastern Asia, and Australasia: the potential for emergent viruses.

The genus Flaviviridae comprises about 70 members, of which about 30 are found in southern, south-eastern and eastern Asia and Australasia. These include major pathogens such as Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile (WN), Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE), tick-borne encephalitis, Kyasanur Forest disease virus, and the dengue viruses. Other members are known to be associated with mild febrile disease in humans, or with no known disease. In addition, novel flaviviruses continue to be discovered, as demonstrated recently by New Mapoon virus in Australia, Sitiawan virus in Malaysia, and ThCAr viru

Human fascioliasis emergence in southern Asia: Complete nuclear rDNA spacer and mtDNA gene sequences prove Indian patient infection related to fluke hybridization in northeastern India and Bangladesh.

Fascioliasis is a snail-borne zoonotic disease with impact on the development of human subjects and communities. It is caused by two liver-infecting fasciolid trematode species, the globally-distributed Fasciola hepatica and the Africa/Asia-restricted but more pathogenic, larger F. gigantica. Fasciola gigantica is the cause of endemicity in livestock throughout the warm lowlands from Pakistan to southeastern Asia since old times. Human fascioliasis is emerging in this region at present, with an increase of patient reports. Complete sequences of rDNA ITS-1 and ITS-2 spacers and mtDNA nad1 and c

Clade C HIV-1 isolates circulating in Southern Africa exhibit a greater frequency of dicysteine motif-containing Tat variants than those in Southeast Asia and cause increased neurovirulence.

BACKGROUND: HIV-1 Clade C (Subtype C; HIV-1C) is responsible for greater than 50% of infections worldwide. Unlike clade B HIV-1 (Subtype B; HIV-1B), which is known to cause HIV associated dementia (HAD) in approximately 15% to 30% of the infected individuals, HIV-1C has been linked with lower prevalence of HAD (0 to 6%) in India and Ethiopia. However, recent studies report a higher prevalence of HAD in South Africa, Zambia and Botswana, where HIV-1C infections predominate. Therefore, we examined whether Southern African HIV-1C is genetically distinct and investigated its neurovirulence. HIV-1

Could tungiasis jump to Asia? Modelling habitat suitability and establishment risk for the tungiasis flea (Tunga penetrans) in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the jigger flea (Tunga penetrans) which typically invades the sole of the foot causing serious morbidity and sometimes mortality through secondary infections such as tetanus. Although tungiasis is found throughout tropical regions of the Americas and Africa, it has not yet become established in tropical Asia. Due to the large human population and extensive poverty in tropical Asia, an introduction of T. penetrans would pose a serious public health threat. Therefore, to estimate the extent of suitable habitat in tropical Asia and to iden

The importance of internet penetration in reducing carbon dioxide emission growth rates and establishing environmental sustainability in South Asia.

South Asia is regarded as a global region with high susceptibility to carbon emission-related climatic problems. As a result, the persistent rise in carbon dioxide emission levels of the South Asian countries has motivated policymakers to develop strategies that are relevant for making this region environmentally sustainable. Although previous research works conducted in the South Asian context have emphasized the pertinence of reducing the annual level of carbon dioxide emissions, those studies have disregarded the issue that the vast reliance of South Asian countries on fossil fuels may prev

EHRA expert consensus document on the management of arrhythmias in frailty syndrome, endorsed by the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), Latin America Heart Rhythm Society (LAHRS), and Cardiac Arrhythmia Society of Southern Africa (CASSA).

There is an increasing proportion of the general population surviving to old age with significant chronic disease, multi-morbidity, and disability. The prevalence of pre-frail state and frailty syndrome increases exponentially with advancing age and is associated with greater morbidity, disability, hospitalization, institutionalization, mortality, and health care resource use. Frailty represents a global problem, making early identification, evaluation, and treatment to prevent the cascade of events leading from functional decline to disability and death, one of the challenges of geriatric and

Micro- and Nanoplastics in South and Southeast Asia: Lessons Learned and Future Directions.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are becoming a significant public health concern, with growing evidence of widespread human exposure in South and Southeast Asia through food, drinking water, air, and occupational settings. Nanoplastics, in particular, represent an under-recognized fraction with distinct exposure pathways and biological relevance. Although causal pathways are not fully established, the consistency of regional exposure patterns and emerging toxicological evidence warrant policy attention. In this region, rapid plastic production, high levels of mismanaged waste, large informal re
