Osteoarchaeological evidence for leprosy from western Central Asia.

Published reports of palaeopathological analyses of skeletal collections from Central Asia are, to date, scarce. During the macroscopic examination of skeletal remains dating to the early first millennium AD from the Ustyurt Plateau, Uzbekistan, diagnostic features suggestive of leprosy were found on one individual from Devkesken 6. This adult female exhibited rhinomaxillary changes indicative of leprosy: resorption of the anterior nasal spine, rounding and widening of the nasal aperture, erosion of the alveolar margin, loss of a maxillary incisor, and inflammatory changes in the hard palate.

Variation and Functional Impact of Neanderthal Ancestry in Western Asia.

Neanderthals contributed genetic material to modern humans via multiple admixture events. Initial admixture events presumably occurred in Western Asia shortly after humans migrated out of Africa. Despite being a focal point of admixture, earlier studies indicate lower Neanderthal introgression rates in some Western Asian populations as compared with other Eurasian populations. To better understand the genome-wide and phenotypic impact of Neanderthal introgression in the region, we sequenced whole genomes of nine present-day Europeans, Africans, and the Western Asian Druze at high depth, and an

Emerging viral diseases of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.

Over the past 6 years, a number of zoonotic and vectorborne viral diseases have emerged in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. Vectorborne disease agents discussed in this article include Japanese encephalitis, Barmah Forest, Ross River, and Chikungunya viruses. However, most emerging viruses have been zoonotic, with fruit bats, including flying fox species as the probable wildlife hosts, and these will be discussed as well. The first of these disease agents to emerge was Hendra virus, formerly called equine morbillivirus. This was followed by outbreaks caused by a rabies-related virus, Au

Genetic diversity of Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus in Western Asia.

Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever, caused by Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (ALKV), is an arboviral infection which is further expanding in tropical and subtropical regions of the Western Asia. A number of Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (ALKV) strains have been isolated from clinical cases representing Saudi Arabia and Egypt; however, the phylogenetic relationship of these particular isolates to those reported previously elsewhere in the world remains elusive. Based on the analysis of the envelope (E), and non-structural gene (NS3 and NS5), the phylogenetic and PASC analysis revealed the circulat

Japanese encephalitis surveillance and immunization--Asia and the Western Pacific, 2012.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is a leading cause of encephalitis in Asia, causing an estimated 67,900 JE cases annually. To control JE, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that JE vaccine be incorporated into immunization programs in all areas where JE is a public health problem. For many decades, progress mainly occurred in a small number of high-income Asian countries. Recently, prospects for control have improved with better disease burden awareness as a result of increased JE surveillance and wider availability of safe, effective vaccines. This report summarizes the status of

The epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications are common in Southeast Asia (SEA) and the Western Pacific region. Gonorrhea, chancroid, nongonococcal urethritis, and syphilis are still the major STDs. However, the clinical incidence of genital herpes and genital warts show a definite increase. The gonococcal infections in SEA show high levels of antimicrobial resistance. There is a high level of chromosomal-mediated and plasmid-mediated penicillinase resistance. The sex industry, strongly fueled by local consumption, travel, and tourism, continues to play an important focal role

Japanese Encephalitis Surveillance and Immunization - Asia and Western Pacific Regions, 2016.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is the most important vaccine-preventable cause of encephalitis in the Asia-Pacific region. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends integration of JE vaccination into national immunization schedules in all areas where the disease is a public health priority (1). This report updates a previous summary of JE surveillance and immunization programs in Asia and the Western Pacific in 2012 (2). Since 2012, funding for JE immunization has become available through the GAVI Alliance, three JE vaccines have been WHO-prequalified,* and an updated WHO JE vaccine pos

Is Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific ready for potential monkeypox virus outbreaks?

The new variant of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) clade Ib has recently spread to other African countries outside the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), prompting the World Health Organisation to declare the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). This comes just two years after the initial PHEIC that was issued for the clade IIb outbreaks. Compared to the clade IIb outbreaks, clade Ib shows a demographic shift, including higher case fatality rates for younger individuals, indicating a possibility of additional transmission pathways through heterosexual and hou

Community-Acquired CNS Infections in Western Asia (2010-2025): A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aimed to summarize the epidemiology, etiology, diagnostic challenges, antimicrobial resistance, and clinical outcomes of community-acquired central nervous system (CNS) infections in Western Asian countries. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed was conducted for studies published from January 2010 to July 2025. Eligible studies included original research and case reports on CNS infections, while unrelated studies or studies outside the region were excluded. Data were extracted and synthesized narratively by pathogen group. Risk of bias was assessed based o

Travel-Related Parasitic Infections in Travellers to Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Countries.

In the last decades, there has been a significant increase in international human mobility with increase in the prosperity, travel possibilities, and number of refugees. In the first half of 2016, the Asian continent showed the fastest growth in the number of tourists. Such increase is seen due to the interest in Asian history, culture, and cuisine. In the globalizing world, human mobility causes changes in the epidemiology of diseases and the spread of various infections across continents. Parasitic infections that may pose a risk for travellers to the Asia-Pacific are malaria, leishmaniasis,

Emerging leadership lecture: Inflammatory bowel disease in Asia: emergence of a "Western" disease.

More than a decade ago, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rare in Asia. Today, the importance of IBD in Asia is exemplified by its rapidly increasing incidence, complicated disease behavior, and substantial morbidity. In the first large-scale population-based epidemiologic study in Asia, the incidence of IBD varied from 0.60 to 3.44 per 100,000. There has been a twofold to threefold increase in the incidence of IBD in several countries in Asia. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is more prevalent than Crohn's disease (CD), although CD incidence is rapidly increasing. A positive family history is much l

Environmental drivers of West Nile fever epidemiology in Europe and Western Asia--a review.

Abiotic and biotic conditions are both important determinants of West Nile Fever (WNF) epidemiology. Ambient temperature plays an important role in the growth rates of vector populations, the interval between blood meals, viral replication rates and transmission of West Nile Virus (WNV). The contribution of precipitation is more complex and less well understood. In this paper we discuss impacts of climatic parameters (temperature, relative humidity, precipitation) and other environmental drivers (such as bird migration, land use) on WNV transmission in Europe. WNV recently became established i

Lagging behind the Western countries: the knowledge gaps of gender differences in heart failure in Asia.

Gender differences in heart failure (HF), ranging from epidemiological and pathophysiological factors to therapeutic response and prognosis, have been well documented in Western countries, especially in Europe and North America. The above gender differences in HF found in Westerners are rarely investigated in Asians. In this review, we explore the worrying knowledge gap on the gender differences in HF that existed in Asia in contrast with Western populations based on the following four aspects: epidemiology, risk factors, therapy, and prognosis. Finally, we conclude that investigations of gend

Typhoid Fever surveillance and vaccine use - South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions, 2009-2013.

Typhoid fever is a serious, systemic infection resulting in nearly 22 million cases and 216,500 deaths annually, primarily in Asia. Safe water, adequate sanitation, appropriate personal and food hygiene, and vaccination are the most effective strategies for prevention and control. In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended use of available typhoid vaccines to control endemic disease and outbreaks and strengthening of typhoid surveillance to improve disease estimates and identify high-risk populations (e.g., persons without access to potable water and adequate sanitation). This re

Decolonizing addiction treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Confronting Russian narcology and Western retreat.

Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) face a dual crisis in addiction treatment. On one side, Russian imperial legacies persist through punitive "narcology," now weaponized amid ongoing aggression. On the other, Western retrenchment, marked by abrupt aid suspensions and dwindling harm-reduction budgets, has weakened the evidence-based counterweight that once challenged authoritarian approaches. The result is a convergence of punitive logics that marginalizes people who use drugs, whether through active repression, such as the closure of methadone programs in Crimea, or sudden neglect, such as

Tracing the spatiotemporal phylodynamics of Japanese encephalitis virus genotype I throughout Asia and the western Pacific.

BACKGROUND: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV; Flaviridae: Flavivirus) causes Japanese encephalitis (JE), which is the most important arboviral disease in Asia and the western Pacific. Among the five JEV genotypes (GI-V), GI has dominated traditional epidemic regions in the past 20 years. We investigated the transmission dynamics of JEV GI through genetic analyses. METHODS: We generated 18 JEV GI near full length sequences by using multiple sequencing approaches from mosquitoes collected in natural settings or from viral isolates obtained through cell culture. We performed phylogenetic and mol
