BACKGROUND: Cancer statistics for Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) people are usually aggregated, masking substantial variation within this heterogeneous population. Herein, the American Cancer Society reports cancer incidence and survival for 8 Asian American and 3 NHPI ethnic groups.
METHODS: The authors used population-based cancer registry data from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, for Asian American and NHPI ethnic groups from 2000 through 2022.
RESULTS: During 2018-2022, overall cancer incidence ranged fr

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2021eng
BACKGROUND: Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) are the fastest growing minority in the United States. Cancer is the leading cause of death for AANHPIs, despite relatively lower cancer morbidity and mortality. Their recent demographic growth facilitates a detailed identification of AANHPI populations with higher cancer risk.
METHODS: Age-adjusted, sex-stratified, site-specific cancer mortality rates from California for 2012 to 2017 were computed for AANHPI groups: Chinese, Filipino, South Asian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Southeast Asian (i.e., Cambodian, Hmong, L

IMPORTANCE: Breast cancer incidence among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander females as an aggregated group have been increasing rapidly. The extent to which these trends apply across Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander ethnic groups is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine incidence trends of invasive breast cancer in 7 Asian American (Asian Indian or Pakistani, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Laotian or Kampuchean, and Vietnamese) and 2 Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (Guamanian, Chamorro, and Samoan and Native Hawaiian) ethnic groups overall and by ag

BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (AANHPI) persons comprise ∼10% of the U.S. population-24 million people-yet a significant gap exists in contemporary data on incident heart failure (HF).
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of HF across disaggregated AANHPI individual groups.
METHODS: We identified adults aged ≥30 years without cardiovascular disease (CVD) within Kaiser Permanente Northern California and Kaiser Permanente Hawaii from 2012 to 2022. Incident HF through 2023 was defined as a hospitalization, ≥3 clinic visi

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population are heterogeneous in health risk factors, socioeconomic status, and health outcomes. Disaggregating AANHPI groups may reveal disparities in cancer incidence. The aim of this study was to examine patterns and trends in incidence of common gastrointestinal cancers in AANHPI groups compared to the non-Hispanic White (NHW) population.
METHODS: Using the detailed AANHPI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, we retrospectively analyzed trends in incidence of colorectal adenocarci

BACKGROUND: Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders have suboptimal human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and cancer screening rates. Asian Americans and NHPIs are often aggregated, masking disparities characterized by varying colonization and immigration patterns and cultural and religious beliefs between populations and ethnicities. We examined the incidence of HPV-associated cancers across disaggregated Asian American and NHPI ethnicities.
METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Detailed Asian/Pacific Islander database, we calculated 1990 to

BACKGROUND: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander individuals have increased risks for episiotomy and severe perineal laceration during vaginal delivery. The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander population in the US is diverse yet few studies disaggregate results within specific ethnicity populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the variability in risks for episiotomy and severe perineal laceration among 16 disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander groups, compared to Non-Hispanic White nulliparous individuals, and assessed wha

In a cross-sectional survey of college students (N = 614) we studied interpersonal violence victimization, perpetration, and mental health outcomes in an ethnoracially diverse rural-based sample of Asian Americans (27%), and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders (25%), two groups vastly underrepresented in trauma research. High rates of interpersonal violence (34%), violence perpetration (13%), and probable psychiatric diagnoses (77%), including posttraumatic stress disorder, were found. Exposure to physical violence, sexual violence, and life stress all were predictive of psychopathology. F

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates have increased substantially among Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Veterans who are more likely to use suffocation as a suicide method than Veterans overall. This study examined demographic, healthcare and injury characteristics of AANHPI Veterans who died by suicide through suffocation and examined the contexts of these deaths. Analyses further examined if there were differences between AANHPI and non-AANHPI Veterans who died by suffocation suicide.
METHODS: This mixed methods analysis used National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS

Objectives: Assess the relationship between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (NH/PI) compared to white older adults. Methods: Data were from the 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey. HRQOL was assessed using the Veterans RAND 12-Item Survey, composed of physical (PCS) and mental component scores (MCS). Lower scores represent worse health. Multivariate regression was conducted to estimate PCS and MCS mean score differences related to self-reported CVD (coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure

Tobacco product use rates among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI), Asian American, and Filipino American young adults in Hawai'i have risen rapidly in recent years following the introduction of electronic nicotine delivery systems. Though some research has examined tobacco use correlates for these demographics of young adults, research examining protective factors, such as cultural connectedness, is lacking. Additionally, research that disaggregates Asian Americans from Pacific Islanders is scarce, despite the differing risk and protective factors that have been determined for each group

OBJECTIVE: To compare frequencies of risk factors and pregnancy outcomes in ethnic groups versus the combined total of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations.
METHODS: Using linked birth and fetal death certificate and maternal hospital discharge data (California 2007-2018), we estimated frequencies of 15 clinical and sociodemographic exposures and 11 pregnancy outcomes. Variability across 15 AANHPI groups was compared using a heat map and compared to frequencies for the total group (n = 904,232).
RESULTS: AANHPI groups varied significantly from each other

BACKGROUND: The burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing in the aging population. However, little is known about CVD risk factors and outcomes for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Other Pacific Islander (NH/PI) older adults by disaggregated subgroups.
METHODS: Data were from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2011-2015 Health Outcomes Survey, which started collecting expanded racial/ethnic data in 2011. Guided by Andersen and Newman's theoretical framework, multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the prevalence and determinants of CVD r

BACKGROUND: Over 20 million people in the United States identified as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander in 2022. Despite the diversity of immigration histories, lived experiences, and health needs within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander community, prior studies in cervical cancer have considered this group in aggregate.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze disparities in cervical cancer stage at presentation in the United States, focusing on disaggregated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander groups.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-Asian sentiment increased when the SARS-CoV-2 virus reached the United States in 2020. Trends in national assaults occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community were evaluated.
METHODS: Patients treated for assaults by emergency medical services between January 2019 and December 2021 were extracted from ImageTrend Collaborate, a national database. Multivariable logistic regression models, adjusting for age, sex, and urbanicity, were used to compare assault rates overall and in the AANHPI population.
