Dipcadi montanum (Dalz.) Baker (Asparagaceae) is a rare scapigerous herb endemic to the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot running parallel to the western coast of India. This study reports the development of a reproducible protocol for mass propagation of this underutilized geophyte using bulb scale and immature leaf base explants. Miniature bulblets were successfully induced from both types of explants after 4 and 8 weeks of culture on full-strength semisolid MS basal medium fortified with 3% sucrose and varying levels of BAP (4.4-17.7 μM) and TDZ (4.5-18.1 μM). The addition of 2.7

An efficient procedure for in vitro propagation of Herreria salsaparrilha Martius was established from single-node explants (fourth and fifth nodes from apex to the base) derived from donor plants maintained under shading-house conditions. After surface sterilization, explants are inoculated in test tubes containing 15 mL of Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium without growth regulators. Cultures are maintained under 35 μmol m-2 s-1 irradiance, a 16/8-h light/dark light regime, at 26 ± 2 °C. The subcultures are carried out under the same conditions, adding 6-benzyladenine 1.0 mg/L and Phytagel® 2.8

The present study evaluated the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Agave sisalana Perrine in classic models of inflammation and pain. The hexanic fraction of A. sisalana (HFAS) was obtained by acid hydrolysis followed by hexanic reflux. Anti-inflammatory properties were examined in three acute mouse models (xylene ear oedema, hind paw oedema and pleurisy) and a chronic mouse model (granuloma cotton pellet). The antinociceptive potential was evaluated in chemical (acetic-acid) and thermal (tail-flick and hot-plate test) models of pain. When given orally, HFAS (5, 10, 25 and 50 mg/kg)

Disporopsis longifolia Craib is an Asian medicinal plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. The plants are well known for their steroidal saponins and phenolic compounds and are traditionally used as tonics for back pain, bellyache, cough, diabetes, asthma, pneumonia and rheumatism. However, they are challenging to identify to species level using morphology. This raises a serious concern for their medicinal applications where botanical quality control is essential. The most appropriate morphological, anatomical and pollen characters for species diagnosis were therefore determined. Synonyms

BACKGROUD: The processed tuberous roots of Asparagus cochinchinensis (Asparagaceae), known as Asparagi Radix, have long been used in East Asia (particularly in China) as traditional medicines and play an indispensable role in the pharmaceutical industry. However, the frequent adulteration of Asparagi Radix with processed tuberous roots obtained from nine other congeneric species could potentially compromise the quality control measures for related pharmaceutical products, while also posing challenges to the conservation and rational exploitation of the nine adulterant congeneric species that a

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Aspidistra is a species-rich, herbaceous monocot genus of tropical Southeast Asia. Most species are recently discovered and apparently endangered, though virtually nothing is known about their biology. Species of the genus are primarily distinguished using flower morphology, which is enormously diverse. However, the pollination process has not been directly observed in the center of diversity of the genus (N Vietnam and S China). Indirect and partly direct data on the only widely cultivated species of the genus (A. elatior) placed it among angiosperms with

Several diseases are associated to the mosquito-human interaction. Mosquitoes are the carriers of severe and well-known illnesses such as malaria, arboviral encephalitis, dengue fever, chikungunya fever, West Nile virus and yellow fever. These diseases produce significant morbidity and mortality in humans and livestock around the world. The present investigation was undertaken to study the ovicidal, larvicidal and adulticidal activities of crude hexane, ethyl acetate, benzene, chloroform and methanol extracts of root of Asparagus racemosus were assayed for their toxicity against three importan

Diabetes mellitus is a fast-growing disease with a major influence on people's quality of life. Oral hypoglycemic drugs and insulin are currently the main effective drugs in the treatment of diabetes, but chronic consumption of these drugs has certain side effects. Polysaccharides, saponins, flavonoids, and phenolics are the primary secondary metabolites isolated from the rhizomes of Polygonatum sibiricum Redouté [Asparagaceae], Polygonatum kingianum Collett & Hemsl [Asparagaceae], or Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua [Asparagaceae], which have attracted much more attention owing to their unique thera

A non-wood raw material with high potential for pulp and paper applications (Hesperaloe funifera) was subjected to a steam explosion pre-treatment, and the subsequent effect of this pretreatment on biopulping and biobleaching was studied. An increase in the delignification rate, bigger than that reported for autohydrolysis and acid hydrolysis pre-treatments, and a reduction in chemical consumption were found during kraft pulping of the exploded samples. However, biopulping with the laccase-mediator system (LMS) did not lead to a reduction in the kappa number in either non-exploded or exploded

Plant-based removal of indoor formaldehyde is a widely studied method, yet little is known about the dynamic changes in this process. In this study, potted Sansevieria trifasciata Prain plants were exposed to 5-ppm formaldehyde gas concentration for 7 days. The results showed that formaldehyde exposure led to plant stress, affected photosynthesis, and damaged membrane lipids, as evidenced by a decrease in chlorophyll content, an increase in Chl a/b ratio and malondialdehyde content. However, the formaldehyde removal ability of the plants increased over the first 5 days, peaking at 18.02 mg h-1

Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are known to be among the most common easy mountable indoor plants capable of purifying indoor air by absorbing carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, xylene, and many other hazardous gases. In addition, these plants are non-toxic and safe for pets and children. This project is focused on the investigation of the spider plants' capability of the formaldehyde purification under laboratory-controlled parameters of the indoor air environment. Two scenarios including employment of fresh plants as well as recovered ones damaged by 7-day exposure of formaldehyde were con

The genus Phormium (New Zealand flax) has fiber possessing a high content of lignin and, like other lignocellulosic materials, it is subject to photodegradation. Photoproducts in the fiber absorbing over a broad spectral region from ∼370 to 600nm are observed as a result of exposure to near-UV radiation from 350 to 400 nm. Irradiation was shown to produce hydrogen peroxide and this can account, at least in part, for the photo-oxidation manifested in changes in the reflectance spectra of the fibers. Unirradiated solid fibers and their aqueous extracts exhibit fluorescence with excitation maxima

Formaldehyde is a hazardous volatile organic compound (VOC) listed as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The active green wall system is a promising technology that utilizes active airflow passing through plants grown along a vertical alignment to increase their mass exposure to pollutants. However, few studies have investigated the effect of airflow rate on their efficacy for formaldehyde removal, and plant-mediated effects are unknown. This study assessed the formaldehyde removal ability of the active green wall using dynamic experiments. Three levels of
