Aspergillus flavus keratitis.

Corneal infection due to the species Aspergillus flavus is rare and often destructive. This report describes a case of Aspergillus flavus corneal ulcer that failed to respond to amphotericin B, pimaricin, and clotrimazole. The eye subsequently became phthisical. The rational approach to the management of fungal corneal infection is to culture or perform sensitivity tests on the isolated organism. Early surgical intervention should be done if the infection fails to respond to medical treatment, and if the disease process extends deep into the stromal tissue and anterior chamber. Fungal malignan

Endocarditis due to Aspergillus flavus.

Fungal endocarditis has emerged as an important complication of patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Our patient had no past history of cardiac surgery, intravenous drug abuse or immunosuppressive therapy. He had received broad-spectrum antibiotics for varying periods, which might have predisposed him to this infection. The diagnosis was based on the demonstration of hyaline, septate branched fungal elements in the infected valvular tissue and isolation of Aspergillus flavus in culture. The delay in establishing the ante-mortem diagnosis because of repeatedly negative blood cultures, pr

Regulation of Conidiogenesis in Aspergillus flavus.

Aspergillus flavus is a representative fungal species in the Aspergillus section Flavi and has been used as a model system to gain insights into fungal development and toxin production. A. flavus has several adverse effects on humans, including the production of the most carcinogenic mycotoxin aflatoxins and causing aspergillosis in immune-compromised patients. In addition, A. flavus infection of crops results in economic losses due to yield loss and aflatoxin contamination. A. flavus is a saprophytic fungus that disperses in the ecosystem mainly by producing asexual spores (conidia), which al

Aspergillus flavus Keratitis After Penetrating Keratoplasty.

Fungal keratitis is a rare but severe complication following penetrating keratoplasty (PKP). We report the clinical course, rapid deterioration, and management of a case of Aspergillus flavus keratitis occurring three months after PKP. A 69-year-old woman with Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy developed pseudophakic bullous keratopathy following cataract surgery. She underwent an uneventful PKP. At two months postoperatively, the graft remained clear with a visual acuity of 2/10. Three months after keratoplasty, the patient presented with pain, redness, mucopurulent discharge, and decreased vision.

Medical management of Aspergillus flavus endocarditis.

An 11-year-old boy underwent a matched unrelated bone marrow transplant for refractory acute myeloid leukemia. He developed invasive aspergillus pneumonia and endocarditis post-transplant. The fungal endocarditis was successfully eradicated with liposomal amphotericin at the dose of 10 mg/kg/day. Surgical intervention was not required and no serious side effects of liposomal amphotericin were observed at this dose.

Renal aspergilloma due to Aspergillus flavus.

Renal aspergillomas have been reported only rarely. We report a case of Aspergillus flavus colonization of the renal pelvis and upper ureter of a patient with concomitant urinary schistosomiasis. The diagnosis was based on the demonstration of characteristic hyphal elements on direct microscopy and isolation of the fungus in culture. The patient was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B. This case emphasizes the importance of direct microscopic examination of urine specimens for prompt diagnosis of fungal infections of the urogenital system. Renal aspergilloma should be considered

Communicating hydrocephalus caused by Aspergillus flavus.

A patient with a past history of sporadic parenteral drug abuse had communicating hydrocephalus associated with arachnoiditis over the lumbar spinal cord. The diagnosis of aspergillosis was made by a newly described immunofluorescent staining procedure and was later confirmed by culture. The spectrum of central nervous system aspergillosis associated with drug abuse is reviewed.

Pulmonary aspergillosis caused by Aspergillus flavus.

Bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is usually caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. The six cases from the Sudan reported here were due to Aspergillus flavus. Three of the patients had primary invasive disease, one had Aspergillus mycetoma in a pre-existing lung cavity, and two had allergic aspergillosis. A special feature of the invasive disease was the clinical and radiographic simulation of malignancy, particularly in one patient who had multiple disseminated nodules of fungal granulomata in the skin of the lower abdomen.

Investigation of Aspergillus flavus in animal virulence.

Aspergillus flavus is a common fungal pathogen of plants, animals and humans. Recently, many genes of A. flavus have been reported involving in regulation of pathogenesis in crops, but whether these genes are involved in animal virulence is still unknown. Here, we used a previous easy-to-use infection model for A. flavus based on mouse model by intravenous inoculation of A. flavus conidia. The outcome of infections in mice model showed that A. flavus NRRL3357 and laboratory strain CA14 PTS were both in dose dependent manner and highly reproducible. The progress of disease could be monitored by

Osteomyelitis of the rib cage by Aspergillus flavus.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus osteomyelitis of the ribs is relatively uncommon. It is a debilitating and severe form of invasive aspergillosis. CASE REPORT: A 61year-old female presented with spontaneous chest pain on the right side of the rib cage and a palpable soft-tissue mass. FDG-PET/CT scan identified activity in the infected site. The lesion was punctured, and purulent material was sent to the laboratory. Aspergillus complex Flavi was isolated. An antifungal treatment with voriconazole was started. The lesion healed, and no recurrence was observed at 8-month follow-up. Molecular identificati

Fatal Aspergillus flavus infection in a neonate.

Aspergillosis is an uncommon perinatal infection diagnosed with increasing frequency in recent years. We report a premature infant who required both nutrition and ventilation artificially assisted and developed a disseminated invasive nosocomial infection from Aspergillus flavus. Autopsy revealed marked hypotrophy of the thymus and multisystem invasive aspergillosis chiefly involving the vascular and alimentary systems and also the respiratory tract, the central nervous system, and the skin. From what we know, this is the first case of the literature with a misleading initial clinical presenta

[Aspergillus flavus endocarditis on a native valve].

A 33 year old female had febrile aplasia following a first chemotherapy treatment for acute T lymphoid leukaemia. She was transferred to intensive care for acute respiratory distress due to bilateral pneumonia with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia septicaemic shock. After an initial improvement with antibiotic treatment, she developed multiple necrotic cutaneous lesions. A skin biopsy showed the presence of Aspergillus flavus in large quantities in the vascular lumina. Echocardiography revealed a voluminous vegetation on the mitral valve supporting aspergillus endocarditis. Despite antifungal trea

Hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis due to Aspergillus flavus.

A 59-year-old woman suffered from occipital headache and bilateral cranial nerve VII, VIII, IX, X, XI and right XII deficit after developing otitis media. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a thickening of the dura mater which was enhanced by gadolinium-DTPA (Gd). Aspergillus flavus was identified from the culture of otorrhea. She was treated with miconazole, flucytosin and fluconazole, which resulted in an improvement of the clinical symptoms and a thinning of the Gd-enhanced lesions on MRI. This is the first case of hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis caused by Asp. flavus infection.

Differentiation of Aspergillus flavus from Aspergillus oryzae Targeting the cyp51A Gene.

Aspergillus flavus is one of the most important agents of invasive and non-invasive aspergillosis, especially in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including Iran. Aspergillus oryzae is closely related to A. flavus, and it is known for its economic importance in traditional fermentation industries. Reports of infection due to A. oryzae are scarce. Several studies reported that differentiating these two species in clinical laboratories is not possible using MALDI-TOF or by targeting fungal barcode genes, such as Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and β-tubulin (benA). The species-lev

Galactosaminogalactan secreted from Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus induces platelet activation.

Platelets are meanwhile recognized as versatile elements within the immune system and appear to play a key role in the innate immune response to pathogens including fungi. Previous experiments revealed platelet activation by direct contact with the hyphal-associated polysaccharide galactosaminogalactan (GAG). Since secreted fungal products may also be relevant and trigger immune reactions or thrombosis, we screened culture supernatants (SN) of human-pathogenic fungi for their capacity to activate platelets. For that purpose, platelets were incubated with SN from various fungal species; platele

Aspergillus flavus genetic structure at a turkey farm.

BACKGROUND: The ubiquitous environmental fungus Aspergillus flavus is also a life-threatening avian pathogen. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of A. flavus isolated from turkey lung biopsy or environmental samples collected in a poultry farm. METHODS: A. flavus isolates were identified using both morphological and ITS sequence features. Multilocus microsatellite genotyping was performed by using a panel of six microsatellite markers. Population genetic indices were computed using FSTAT and STRUCTURE. A minimum-spanning tree (MST) and UPGMA
