An old unknown: 40 years of crayfish plague monitoring in Switzerland, the water tower of Europe.

The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci is the causative agent of crayfish plague, a disease threatening susceptible freshwater crayfish species in Europe. To detect its spatiotemporal occurrence in Switzerland, we reviewed (1) the literature regarding occurrence of crayfish plague and North American crayfish carrier species and (2) the necropsy report archive of the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI) from 1968 to 2020. In the past, crayfish plague was diagnosed through several methods: conventional PCR, culture, and histology. When available, we re-evaluated archived Bouin's or formalin-fi

Native European crayfish Astacus astacus competitive in staged confrontation with the invasive crayfish Faxonius limosus and Procambarus acutus.

The European native, noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) has suffered from a serious and long term population decline due to habitat destruction, water pollution and the impact of the invasive North American crayfish that are carriers of the crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci). The latter being the major factor currently confining noble crayfish to uninvaded (parts of) waterbodies. However, recently wild populations of apparently healthy noble crayfish carrying the crayfish plague have been found. As crayfish are known for their inter- and intraspecific agonistic behaviour which may be key for t

Chronic Aphanomyces astaci infection in wild white-clawed crayfish: risks and implications for breeding programs.

Aphanomyces astaci is the oomycete responsible for crayfish plague, a disease with devastating effects on susceptible crayfish populations across Eurasia. Recently, low virulence strains of this oomycete, mostly belonging to genetic group A, have been reported to coexist with European crayfish species. Between 2011 and 2020, 19 populations of white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes complex, were monitored in North-eastern Italy to detect the presence of A. astaci using molecular assays. Chronic infection was documented in eight populations, two of which were found to be persistently t

Aphanomyces astaci isolate from latently infected stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium) population is virulent.

Aphanomyces astaci infection is the cause of crayfish plague in European crayfish. Here the virulence of an A. astaci As strain isolated from apparently healthy stone crayfish (Austropotamobius torrentium) from Slovenia was compared to that of the Psl-Puujärvi A. astaci isolate in 3 crayfish species: noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) from Finland and stone crayfish from Slovenia. All 3 crayfish species were challenged with PsI-Puujärvi A. astaci and succumbed to crayfish plague, with both noble crayfish and stone crayfish showing 100% mortality, while

Dose-dependent mortality of the noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) to different strains of the crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci).

Several reports of the European crayfish species carrying a latent infection of the crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci) have emerged and the discussion has focused especially on the lowered virulence of As-genotypes behind decreased mortality. The aim of this study was to compare the killing rate of different A. astaci strains in controlled infection experiments. Two separate infection experiments with three A. astaci strains (UEFT2B (As), Evira6462/06 (As) and UEF8866-2 (PsI)) were made to compare the noble crayfish populations from the Lake Viitajärvi, Tervo, (Expt I) and the Lake Mikitänjä

Invasive crayfish and crayfish plague on the move: first detection of the plague agent Aphanomyces astaci in the Romanian Danube.

Native European crayfish, such as Astacus leptodactylus, are threatened, among other factors, by the crayfish plague agent Aphanomyces astaci, dispersed by invasive North American crayfish. Two of these invaders, Pacifastacus leniusculus and Orconectes limosus, have extended their distribution in the River Danube catchment; the latter was detected for the first time in Romania in 2008. We monitored, at monthly intervals for over 2 yr, occurrence of native A. leptodactylus and invasive O. limosus at 6 sites on the Romanian Danube and checked for the invasive species in 4 of its tributaries. Crayfish and Their Hidden Tenants: Direct and Indirect Effects of Ectosymbionts on Crayfish Behaviors and Health.

Symbiotic relationships are a vital component of the stability and function of ecosystems. Despite their importance, our understanding of many key symbiotic relationships is rudimentary. Within freshwater ecosystems, crayfish are considered keystone species and ecosystem engineers, in addition to serving as a host to multiple ectosymbionts. Recent studies on crayfish symbioses have primarily focused on branchiobdellidan worms in isolation, showcasing context-dependent mutualistic and parasitic fitness outcomes for the crayfish hosts. However, in natural environments, branchiobdellidan worms of

Niche dynamics along two centuries of multiple crayfish invasions.

The realised ecological niches of species may change in response to dynamic abiotic and biotic environments, particularly under fast global change. To fully understand the dynamics of niche features and their drivers, it is essential to have a long-term view of species distributions and the factors that may have influenced them. Here, we analysed the distribution and niche dynamics of the Italian crayfish (Austropotamobius fulcisianus) in the Iberian Peninsula over the past 200 years. The Italian crayfish was introduced to Spain in the 16th century, and spread due to multiple stocking events u

Morphology and histology of P. argentinus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Caridea) digestive tract.

This work describes the morphology and histology of the P. argentinus digestive tract. The foregut comprises the mouth, oesophagus, and stomach and is lined by a simple cylindrical epithelium overlain by cuticle. There are tegumental glands in the oral region and in the first portion of the oesophagus and of the hindgut. The cardiac stomach is an oval dorsal sac in the cephalothorax and has no calcified structures. The pyloric stomach comprises an upper chamber and a lower gland filter. The filter consists of an outer row of elongated setae and an inner row of dorsally curved setae forming lon

Kinematics of rotation in place during defense turning in the crayfish Procambarus clarkii.

The kinematic patterns of defense turning behavior in freely behaving specimens of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii were investigated with the aid of a video-analysis system. Movements of the body and all pereiopods, except the chelipeds, were analyzed. Because this behavior approximates to a rotation in place, this analysis extends previous studies on straight and curve walking in crustaceans. Specimens of P. clarkii responded to a tactile stimulus on a walking leg by turning accurately to face the source of the stimulation. Angular velocity profiles of the movement of the animal's carapace s

Post-embryonic development of rectifying electrical synapses in the crayfish: ultrastructure.

The post-embryonic development of the rectifying Giant Fibre-Motor Giant (GF-MoG) synapse and the Giant Fibre-Segmental Giant (GF-SG) synapse has been investigated using electron-microscopy. In adults, the MoG and SG neurons make contact with the GFs by sending narrow 'finger-like' processes through the glial and connective tissue sheath surrounding each GF. The junctional region is characterized by closely apposed membranes (approximately 4 nm separation) traversed by regularly spaced connections, and large (60-80 nm) spherical vesicles in the presynaptic fibre. The hidden passengers: On the role of exotic crayfish in the spread of symbiotic and pathogenic organisms in Northern Iberian Peninsula.

The spread of invasive crayfish species poses a growing threat to freshwater ecosystems and public health, not only through direct ecological impacts but also by facilitating the transmission of symbionts and potential zoonotic pathogens. This study characterizes the symbiont diversity associated with the crayfish species that occur in northern Spain. In addition, the first comprehensive and comparative compilation of reported symbiont and parasite species of crayfish species reported in Iberia is provided. Comparative study on physiological and metabolic responses of crayfish to ozone micro-nano bubbles and ultrasound washing.

Maintaining the well-being of living aquatic products before processing is crucial to guarantee best food quality. This study investigated the different effects of ozone micro-nano bubbles washing (OMW) and ultrasound washing on the well-being of living crayfish, one of the most economically valuable freshwater aquatic products in China. It has been found that OMW was a gentler and more effective alternative to traditional ultrasonic washing (UW) that reduced physical damage, thus leading to enhanced living vitality, increased intestinal content evacuation rate, and improved surface cleanlines

Crayfish plague and microsporidiosis occurrence in wild populations of the white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes complex in Trentino (North-East Italy).

One of the causes of the decline in distribution and abundance of the endangered white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes complex throughout Europe is the invasion of alien crayfish, and the associated spread of infectious diseases, primarily the crayfish plague caused by Aphanomyces astaci. Another relevant disease is microsporidiosis (porcelain disease), caused by Astathelohania contejeani and Nosema austropotamobii. Between 2021 and 2024, we conducted a monitoring survey, aimed at mapping the distribution of A. astaci, A. contejeani and N. austropotamobii in wild populations of A. pa

Crayfish plague in Czechia: Outbreaks from novel sources and testing for chronic infections.

The crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci, which is among the most studied pathogens of aquatic invertebrates, co-evolved with North American crayfish species but threatens crayfish on other continents. The pathogen causes mass mortalities, particularly in Europe. In this study we document 12 crayfish plague outbreaks that occurred from 2014 to 2019 in Czechia and, by using available molecular techniques (microsatellite and mtDNA markers), we reveal the A. astaci genotypes involved. Our results provide the first evidence of strains from genotype group D, originally associated with the ho

[Regulation of pyloric rhythm by I(A) and I(h) in crayfish stomatogastric ganglion].

The stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of shellfish includes 30 neurons and produces pyloric rhythms. It is the common model to study central pattern generator (CPG). Regulation of pyloric rhythms not only is related to the property of single neurons in STG but also depends on the connections and property of the whole neuronal network. It has been found that transient potassium current (I(A)) and hyperpolarization-activated cation current (I(h)) exist in certain types of neurons of STG. However, roles played by these two currents in maintaining and regulating the pyloric rhythms are unknown. In the

Melanised exoskeletal lesions in the narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus) are associated with an oomycete-dominated microbial assemblage without detectable Fusarium: evidence from a Belarusian reservoir.

Burn spot disease, a form of shell disease in crayfish, has been linked to Fusarium avenaceum (in Astacus astacus and Pontastacus leptodactylus from Estonia and Turkey) and Fusarium solani (in a distinct form on Saaremaa Island, Estonia). Severe melanised lesions in P. leptodactylus from Belarus's Lyubanskoye Reservoir resemble the Saaremaa syndrome. This study aimed to characterise the culturable microorganisms in these lesions and to test for Fusarium species. We performed the first culture-based molecular characterisation of lesion-associated fungi and oomycetes in this host, using ITS rDNA

Opening Pandora's box: First insights into the genetic diversity of Aphanomyces astaci in Switzerland.

Aphanomyces astaci, the etiological agent of crayfish plague, varies in virulence depending on their genetic strains. Five genotype groups (A-E) are well characterized and, with exception of genotype group A, cause significant mortality in European freshwater crayfish species. In this study, we aimed to investigate the presence and diversity of A. astaci genotype groups in Switzerland by adapting the qPCR assays (Simplex-qPCR and Duplex-qPCR) published by Di Domenico et al. (2021) to a Pentaplex-qPCR assay. The Pentaplex-qPCR was compared to Simplex-qPCR, Duplex-qPCR and Triplex-qPCR assays us

Prevalence of the crayfish plague pathogen in red swamp crayfish populations in western France: How serious is the risk for the native white-clawed crayfish?

The crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci has been implicated in a number of mass mortalities and irreversible population declines of native crayfish across Europe. At present, the reservoirs of the pathogen in Europe are mainly populations of invasive North American crayfish species. In southwestern Europe, including France, a particularly widespread invader is the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii. Recent distribution data confirm that P. clarkii is present in at least 75 French departments, i.e. more than 78% of those in metropolitan France. We analysed the prevalence and pathoge
