Lisosomal storage disease caused by ingestion of Astragalus spp in llamas: an emergent concern.

Lysosomal storage diseases are inherited or acquired disorders characterized by dysfunctional lysosomes that lead to intracytoplasmic accumulation of undegraded substrates, causing impaired cellular function and death. Many acquired lysosomal storage diseases are produced by toxic plants, which have indolizidine alkaloids, including swainsonine, that inhibits lysosomal α-mannosidase and Golgi α-mannosidase II. Swainsonine-induced nervous disease associated with various plants has been reported, including species of the genus Astragalus, Sida, Oxitropis, Swainsona, and Ipomoea. Two species of A

Cardioprotective mechanisms of phytochemicals against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline antibiotic, which is effectively used in the treatment of different malignancies, such as leukemias and lymphomas. Its most serious side effect is dose-dependent cardiotoxicity, which occurs through inducing oxidative stress apoptosis. Due to the myelosuppressive effect of dexrazoxane, a commonly-used drug to alleviate DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, researchers investigated the potential of phytochemicals for prophylaxis and treatment of this condition. Phytochemicals are plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties. Preclinical trial

Effect of selenium hyperaccumulation on the root endophytic and rhizosphere microbiome of two Astragalus species.

Metal hyperaccumulation is prevalent throughout plant evolution, particularly in the legume family (Fabaceae), and acts as a presumed chemical defence against herbivory. However, metal hyperaccumulation can have non-target impacts on other biological interactors, including plant-microbe interactions. This information is important given the interest in utilizing hyperaccumulating plants for phytoremediation of anthropogenically contaminated soils. Here we employ a greenhouse experiment manipulating selenium level along with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing methods to explore the effect of sele

Climatic controls on water-use efficiency and nitrogen acquisition of Astragalus on southwestern Tibetan Plateau.

BACKGROUND: The southwestern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is characterized by cold and dry alpine grasslands, yet how plants and soil nitrogen cycles adapt to conditions that are drier and colder than other parts of the TP remain unclear. We measured δ13C and δ15N in Astragalus, a widespread N-fixing legume, and soils along a 3500-5000 m transect in the southwestern TP. RESULTS: Plant δ13C and inferred intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE, 85.6-114.2 μmol CO2 mol-1 H2O) were primarily controlled by growing-season temperature (GST), with SEM showing a significant direct effect of GST on iWUE (standard
