Observations on the anatomy of the funiculus spermaticus and the testis in Brachyteles sp. (SPIX, 1823) primates - Atelidae.

BACKGROUND: Analysing the literature about the reproductive anatomy on New World Primates, one can see the need of standardisation on the description methods and, more importantly, the lack of detailed information. The problem is aggravated by the difficult access to specimens of the endangered species such as Brachyteles sp. This paper's objective was to extend knowledge on the male reproductive anatomy of these primates. The testis and funiculus spermaticus of Brachyteles are described in detail. METHODS: We utilised one individual of Brachyteles arachnoides, two hybrids (B. arachnoides × B

The comparative and functional anatomy of the forelimb muscle architecture of Humboldt's woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha).

Humboldt's woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagortricha) is a ceboid primate that more frequently engages in plantigrade quadrupedalism (~89%) but is, like most other members of the subfamily Atelinae, capable of suspensory postures and "tail assisted" brachiation. That taxon's decreased reliance on suspension is reflected in the skeletal anatomy of the upper limb which is less derived relative to more frequently suspensory atelines (Ateles, Brachyteles) but is in many ways (i.e., phalangeal curvature, enlarged joint surfaces, elongated diaphyses) intermediate between highly suspensory and quadrupedal

Polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with intestinal necrosis, peritonitis, and sepsis.

Polyarteritis nodosa is an idiopathic necrotizing vasculitis that affects small to medium-sized arteries. We describe a case of polyarteritis nodosa in a captive common wooly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) associated with transmural intestinal necrosis and secondary peritonitis. This condition must be considered for differential diagnosis of segmental arteritis in neotropical primates.

Cardiorenal syndrome in a black spider monkey (Ateles chamek).

Herein, we describe pathological changes in a 17-year-old female black spider monkey (Ateles chamek) that presented with clinical, echocardiographic and morphological evidence of chronic renal dysfunction leading to cardiac disease. At echocardiographic examination, cardiac hypertrophy, right pulmonary artery branch rigidity and diastolic and systolic dysfunction were identified. At necropsy, there was pericardial effusion and the heart was diffuse and markedly enlarged, with thickening of the left ventricular wall and interventricular septum. Both kidneys were small, firm and irregular. Micro

Anatomicohistological characteristics of the tubular genital organs of the female woolly monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii).

Functional morphology of the reproductive organs is a key component for the better understanding of reproductive patterns as well to maximize reproductive efficiency and to develop assisted breeding techniques adapted to wildlife. This study examined anatomical and histological characteristics of genital organs of 60 Poeppig's woolly monkey females in the wild in different reproductive stages, collected by rural hunters in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. The endometrium, the endometrial glands, and the myometrium showed a significant increase in size related to the follicular growth. In nonp

Occurrence of Dipetalonema gracile in a wild population of woolly monkey Lagothrix poeppiigii in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon.

Dipetalonema gracile (Rudolphi, 1809) (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) is one of six species of cavities filarial parasites of Neotropical non-human primates. The present study recorded the occurrence of D. gracile, provides morphological and morphometric data and extends the geographical distribution. Adult filariae were obtained from the thoracic and abdominal cavities of 38 specimens of woolly monkey, which were used for local human consumption, in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Male and female filarids were processed and analysed using light and scanning electron microscopy. Details of the

CAMPYLOBACTER HYOINTESTINALIS ISOLATION FROM HOWLER (ALOUATTA CARAYA) AND SPIDER MONKEYS (ATELES FUSCICEPS ROBUSTUS) AT A ZOOLOGIC FACILITY IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS.

Campylobacter hyointestinalis was initially isolated from an asymptomatic black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) in a routine fecal culture examination. Fecal cultures from other individuals in this group and an adjacently housed black-headed spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps robustus) group recovered C. hyointestinalis from all but one of the individuals sampled (1.1 spider monkeys and 2.1 howler monkeys). Concurrently, one spider monkey presented with acute onset severe rectal prolapse and diarrhea. Whole-genome sequencing results of C. hyointestinalis isolates from all individuals were homolog

Reproductive physiology with emphasis on endometrial cycles of woolly and uakari monkeys-A literature review.

The ability of a species to withstand human impact depends on its life history characteristics, including social, ranging, and reproductive activity. The genera Lagothrix and Cacajao are more susceptible to anthropic action than small-sized primates due to their slower life histories, more restricted geographical ranges, and lower population densities. This narrative literature review aimed to gather scientific information available from the last 60 years on the reproductive biology of females of the genera Lagothrix and Cacajao. Most studies on the genus Lagothrix, mainly focused on L. lagoth

Variation of thoracolumbar vertebral morphology in anthropoid primates.

OBJECTIVES: Morphological variation among extant primates in the lumbar vertebral column is well studied. However, knowledge concerning the thoracic spine, an important region responsible for supporting and facilitating movement in the upper trunk, remains relatively scarce. Consequently, our comprehension of the functional differentiation exhibited throughout the thoracolumbar vertebral column among various primate species remains constrained. In this study, we examined patterns of morphological variation in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of extant hominoids, cercopithecoids, and Ateles.

Acute toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) in Mexico.

Toxoplasma gondii causes fatal multisystemic disease in New World primates, with respiratory failure and multifocal necrotic lesions. Although cases and outbreaks of toxoplasmosis have been described, there are few genotyping studies and none has included parasite load quantification. In this article, we describe two cases of lethal acute toxoplasmosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) of Mexico city. The main pathological findings included pulmonary edema, interstitial pneumonia, hepatitis and necrotizing lymphadenitis, and structures similar to T. gondii tachyzoites observed by histopat

Endometrial Collagen in Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix l. poeppiggi) and the Uakari (Cacajao calvus).

INTRODUCTION: This study microscopically characterizes collagen changes and their relationship with endometrial architecture in two Neotropical primates. METHODS: Uterine fragments from six Lagothrix l. poeppigii and six Cacajao calvus in different reproductive phases were histologically processed using Picrosirius Red staining. RESULTS: In the functional layer, collagen was highest in the early proliferative phase (5.19% ± 2.53%; p < 0.001), whereas the basal layer had the lowest percentage (5.85% ± 4.69%; p < 0.01). Type I collagen predominated, while type III was less expressed. Type I co

Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus Infection in Nonhuman Primate, Guatemala, 2023.

We isolated Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) subtype IE phylogenetically related to Gulf Coast strains in a spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) released from a rescue center in Guatemala. Serologic testing of 118 monkeys indicated no additional VEEV infections. Infection of a primate warrants intensified surveillance of VEEV transmission cycles in North America.

A new species of Dipetalonema (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) from Ateles chamek from the Beni of Bolivia.

We describe a new species of Dipetalonema occurring in the body cavity of Ateles chamek (Humboldt, 1812) from north-central Bolivia. Morphologic characters serving to separate Dipetalonema yatesi n. sp. from known forms include a vagina vera with a simple tube and thin walls and a left spicule, which possesses a handle shorter than the lamina (ratio 2.7); the latter displays an anterior membranous alae similar in length to the terminal flagellum, a distal extremity of the left spicule within a simple hook and a membrane, phasmids at the basis of the lappets, and heterogeneous muscles occupying

Status of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) in the time of yellow fever.

Understanding the impact of zoonotic diseases on wild primate populations is important for assessing local extinction risks and for evaluating potential mitigating factors. Comparative data on demographic changes in two isolated populations of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) during a severe yellow fever outbreak in southeastern Brazil provide unique insights into the potential effects of this disease in this Critically Endangered species. From October 2016 to April 2017, the muriqui population at the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural-Feliciano Miguel Abdala (Caratinga) lo

Isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from captive Ateles paniscus.

An adult female red-faced black spider monkey (Ateles paniscus), housed for 2 years in the Parque Estoril Zoo in São Paulo, Brazil, showed apathy. Clinical examination revealed discrete emaciation, swelling and induration of lymph nodes, and presence of a mass in the abdominal cavity. Therapies with enrofloxacin, azithromycin, and ceftiofur were ineffective. The animal died after 6 months. Necropsy and histopathology confirmed granulommas in lymph nodes, parietal and visceral pleura, lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys. Acid-fast bacilli were isolated and identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis
