How Well Do Athletic Trainers Recognize and Evaluate the Female Athlete Triad? A Survey of Athletic Trainers in the Practicing United States.

Background: The Female Athlete Triad is the connection between energy deficiency with or without an eating disorder, menstrual disturbances, and bone loss that is found in female athletes. Affected women can have significant short- and long-term health consequences, such as decreased athletic performance, infertility, and osteoporosis. These sequelae can be minimized with early intervention, which requires both an understanding of the Female Athlete Triad and screening practices. Athletic trainers (ATs) are an important part of the athlete's care team with frequent interactions with patients.

Reaching Underserved Communities in Partnership with Outreach Athletic Trainers.

INTRODUCTION: Outreach athletic trainers (ATs) are a novel community-clinical linkage who connect high school students and family medicine practices. Our study quantitatively explored the relationship between students and ATs. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study, collecting data from students and parents/guardians at a preparticipation examination event in April 2024. RESULTS: We recruited 79 unique participants (42 students, 37 parents/guardians). In a linear regression, parent/guardian trust in ATs, parent/guardian distrust in the health care system, student health literacy, and

Exploring Predictors of Moral Disengagement in Collegiate Athletic Trainers.

CONTEXT: Considering recent high-profile reports of malpractice and negligence by National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic trainers (ATs), it is prudent to investigate the psychological mechanisms that may influence ATs' ability to justify unethical behaviors. When treating injured student-athletes, ATs may undergo a cognitive process known as moral disengagement, which involves convincing oneself that ethical standards do not apply in a particular context. OBJECTIVE: To explore the psychological factors and traits among ATs that may predict moral disengagement pertaining to a

National Athletic Trainers' Association Position Statement: Exertional Heat Illnesses.

OBJECTIVE: To present best-practice recommendations for the prevention, recognition, and treatment of exertional heat illnesses (EHIs) and to describe the relevant physiology of thermoregulation. BACKGROUND: Certified athletic trainers recognize and treat athletes with EHIs, often in high-risk environments. Although the proper recognition and successful treatment strategies are well documented, EHIs continue to plague athletes, and exertional heat stroke remains one of the leading causes of sudden death during sport. The recommendations presented in this document provide athletic trainers and

National Athletic Trainers' Association position statement: anabolic-androgenic steroids.

OBJECTIVE: This manuscript summarizes the best available scholarly evidence related to anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) as a reference for health care professionals, including athletic trainers, educators, and interested others. BACKGROUND: Health care professionals associated with sports or exercise should understand and be prepared to educate others about AAS. These synthetic, testosterone-based derivatives are widely abused by athletes and nonathletes to gain athletic performance advantages, develop their physiques, and improve their body image. Although AAS can be ergogenic, their abuse

OBJECTIVE: To present recommendations for the prevention, recognition, and treatment of environmental cold injuries. BACKGROUND: Individuals engaged in sport-related or work-related physical activity in cold, wet, or windy conditions are at risk for environmental cold injuries. An understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology, risk management, recognition, and immediate care of environmental cold injuries is an essential skill for certified athletic trainers and other health care providers working with individuals at risk. RECOMMENDATIONS: These recommendations are intended to provide

Low Back Pain Treatment by Athletic Trainers and Athletic Therapists: Biomedical or Biopsychosocial Orientation?

CONTEXT: Low back pain (LBP) remains a societal burden due to consistently high rates of recurrence and chronicity. Recent evidence suggested that a provider's treatment orientation influences patient beliefs, the clinical approach, and subsequently, rehabilitation outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To characterize American athletic trainer (AT) and Canadian athletic therapist (C-AT) treatment orientations toward LBP. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Online survey. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 273 ATs (response rate = 13.3%) and 382 C-ATs (response rate = 15.3%). MAIN OUTCOME MEASU

Improving Concussion Education: Do Athletic Trainers' Opinions Match Expert Consensus?

CONTEXT: The National Collegiate Athletic Association and Department of Defense (NCAA-DoD) Mind Matters Challenge created "useful and feasible" consensus recommendations to improve concussion care-seeking behavior in collegiate athletes and military cadets. Given athletic trainers' (ATs') role as providers of concussion education and medical care, it is important to understand if they agree with the expert panel that the recommendations are useful and feasible. OBJECTIVE: To examine ATs' current concussion-assessment and -management techniques. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Web-based survey. Although the incidence of these syndromes is infrequent, when manifested, they can completely disrupt the life and career of those affected. When they are manifested within the physically active population, they can jeoardize the futures of the most promising athletes. DATA SOURCES: Public documents available from the U. S. National Collegiate Athletic Association athletic trainers' response to the Arrington settlement: management, compliance, and practice patterns.

The primary purpose of this study was to assess Athletic Trainers' (ATs) report of NCAA member institution compliance with the Arrington settlement, the concussion lawsuit vs. the NCAA, and to elucidate compliance predictors. A secondary purpose was to provide a contemporary concussion management clinical practice pattern description among NCAA collegiate athletic trainers. Head Athletic Trainers from NCAA Division I, II, and III completed an electronic questionnaire in August 2020 regarding their institution's response to the Arrington Settlement and their current concussion management clinic

Youth Concussion Management Practices Among Athletic Trainers: A Vignette-Based Survey.

CONTEXT: Recovery protocols for treatment of sports concussion have received widespread adoption across the country. While stages of recovery and treatment are relatively clearly defined, there remains variability in implementation of specific recommendations, particularly regarding activities that constitute rest during stages calling for limitations on activity participation. Specific recommendations being employed by practitioners have not been previously assessed. In an aim to document current concussion management practices in the field, athletic trainers were surveyed regarding how activ
