Metabolomic Fingerprinting of Salinispora From Atlantic Oceanic Islands.

Salinispora (Micromonosporaceae) is an obligate marine bacterium genus consisting of three species that share over 99% 16S rRNA identity. The genome and biosynthetic pathways of the members of this genus have been widely investigated due to their production of species-specific metabolites. However, despite the species' high genetic similarity, site-specific secondary metabolic gene clusters have been found in Salinispora strains collected at different locations. Therefore, exploring the metabolic expression of Salinispora recovered from different sites may furnish insights into their environme

Ciguatera fish poisoning in the Caribbean islands and Western Atlantic.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (ciguatera), a common poisoning caused by fish ingestion, is reviewed in the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean waters. It is endemic from Florida coasts (northern limit) to Martinique Island (southern limit), with outbreaks occurring from time to time. In the Caribbean, ciguatera causes a polymorphic syndrome with gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and neurological signs and symptoms. Neurological and muscular dysfunctions can be treated by intravenous injection of D-mannitol. The lipid-soluble toxins involved are ciguatoxins that are likely produced by the dinoflagell

Metal Concentrations in Wild-Harvested Phaeophyta Seaweed from the Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands, Spain).

Seaweeds are being consumed more often worldwide and are a source of essential minerals, fiber, vitamins, amino acids, and various bioactive compounds that have many beneficial effects on human health. However, marine pollution and the high capacity of seaweed to absorb metals may mean this food can also be dangerous to human health. The concentrations of some trace elements (B, Ba, Fe, Ni, Li, and V) and toxic metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) were determined in various species of wild seaweeds in the Phaeophyta group of brown algae from the Atlantic Ocean. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission sp

Spatiotemporal patterns of benthic communities on the shallow reefs of Southwestern Atlantic oceanic islands.

Reef ecosystems are among the most diverse marine systems, with benthic communities underpinning trophic structure and habitat complexity. However, long-term dynamics of benthic assemblages in oceanic reefs remain poorly resolved, particularly across isolated tropical systems under different protection regimes. Here, we assessed spatial and temporal variation in benthic community composition across four Brazilian oceanic islands: St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (SP), Rocas Atoll (RA), Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FN), and Trindade Island (TR). Using annual photoquadrat surveys since 201

Not-so-frequent flyers? Restricted avian dispersal of Diplostomum parasites across North Atlantic islands.

Migratory hosts are key vectors of long-distance parasite dispersal. In the North Atlantic, migratory connectivity of avian hosts suggests that diplostomid trematodes with broad host specificity could potentially exhibit widespread distributions. However, host migration does not necessarily result in successful parasite dispersal. We investigated the diversity and distribution of Diplostomum spp. infecting freshwater salmonids in Greenland and the Faroe Islands using a metabarcoding approach. In Greenland, infection prevalence in Arctic char and Atlantic salmon ranged from 0% to 100% across lo

A 15-Year Retrospective Review of Ciguatera in the Madeira Islands (North-East Atlantic, Portugal).

The first ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in Portugal dates from 2008 when 11 people reported CFP symptoms after consuming a 30 kg amberjack caught around the Selvagens Islands (Madeira Archipelago). Since then, 49 human poisonings have been reported. The emergence of a new threat challenged scientists and regulators, as methods for toxic microalgae analyses and ciguatoxin (CTX) detection were not implemented. To minimise the risk of ciguatera, the Madeira Archipelago authorities interdicted fisheries in Selvagens Islands and banned the capture of amberjacks weighing more than 10 kg in the enti

High levels of polychlorinated biphenyls in tissues of Atlantic turtles stranded in the Canary Islands, Spain.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs 28, 31, 52, 101, 138, 153, 180, and 209) were measured in tissue samples (liver and fat) from 30 loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta, 1 green turtle Chelonia mydas, and 1 leatherback Dermochelys coriacea stranded on the coasts of the Canary Islands, trying to establish a possible relation between PCB concentrations and the lesions and causes of death. Tissues from these turtles contained higher levels of PCBs than those reported in turtles from other geographical regions. Sigma PCB concentrations (1980+/-5320 ng g(-1)wet wt.) in the liver of loggerheads were high

Unusual Mass Mortality of Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) in the Canary Islands Associated with Adverse Weather Events.

The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) is a seabird species characterized by great diving capabilities and transoceanic migratory behavior. These movements contribute to the dispersion of the species during migration, and episodes of mortality associated with migration may be a normal event in the dynamic of the Atlantic puffin populations. This study aimed to describe the anatomopathological findings of an unusual mortality event of Atlantic puffins observed during the non-breeding period along the coast of the Canary Islands. The most consistent gross finding during necropsy was generalize

Primary uterine T-cell lymphoma with metastasis in an Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis), Canary Islands, Spain.

We describe gross, histopathologic, and immunonocytologic features of a primary uterine T-cell lymphoma with multiple metastases in an adult female Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis). Neoplastic T-cell lymphocytes (CD3+) partially effaced the uterus, ovaries, mesosalpinx, and urinary bladder and variably infiltrated abdominal and thoracic organs. Herpesvirus and morbillivirus PCR were negative.

Investigating high pathogenicity avian influenza virus incursions to remote islands: detection of H5N1 on Gough Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying the emergence and spread of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) is critical for tracking its global dissemination, particularly via migratory seabirds, given their role in transmission over long distances. Scavenging seabirds, such as skuas, may act as both reservoirs and vectors, and have been linked to multiple outbreaks since 2021. Here, we report the detection of HPAIV H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in three Tristan skua (Stercorarius antarcticus hamiltoni) carcasses on Gough Island in the central South Atlantic Ocean. Pathological Findings in Two Events of Illegal Hunting of Atlantic Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) from the Canary Islands.

This study characterizes the pathological findings in Atlantic Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) chicks from the Canary Islands associated with illegal hunting cases. A retrospective analysis of necropsy archives, including imaging techniques (X-rays and computed tomography) and histopathological examinations, was conducted on twenty juvenile shearwaters. The study revealed significant cranioencephalic trauma as the primary cause of death in both poaching events. Differences in the methods used by the perpetrators were noted, with variations in skull fractures and associated injuries. T

Tropical cyclone activity predicts autumn vagrancy of Nearctic birds on a remote North Atlantic island.

Wind drift has long been invoked as a primary driver of the seasonal appearance in Europe of long-distance migrants from North America (‘Nearctic vagrants’), presumed to be displaced beyond their normal range by westerly crosswinds and tropical storms encountered during migration. Yet few studies have tested how tropical cyclone (TC) activity shapes long-term patterns in offshore vagrancy. I assembled a 20-year autumn time series (2005–2024) from the small oceanic island of Corvo (Azores, Portugal) and used generalized linear models (GLMs) to relate fluctuations in Nearctic vagrancy to meteoro

Ciguatera-Causing Dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus spp. (Dinophyceae) in a Subtropical Region of North Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands): Morphological Characterization and Biogeography.

Dinoflagellates belonging to the genus Gambierdiscus produce ciguatoxins (CTXs), which are metabolized in fish to more toxic forms and subsequently cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in humans. Five species of Gambierdiscus have been described from the Canary Islands, where CTXs in fish have been reported since 2004. Here we present new data on the distribution of Gambierdiscus species in the Canary archipelago and specifically from two islands, La Palma and La Gomera, where the genus had not been previously reported. Gambierdiscus spp. concentrations were low, with maxima of 88 and 29 cells

A New Sponge Associated Shrimp of the Genus Periclimenaeus Borradaile, 1915 (Decapoda, Palaemonidae) from the Tropical Eastern Atlantic, Cabo Verde Islands.

A new species of the caridean shrimp genus Periclimenaeus is described from the Cabo Verde Islands, tropical eastern Atlantic. Periclimenaeus ramili sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to the north-eastern Atlantic P. aurae dos Santos, Calado & Araújo, 2008, the western Atlantic P. pearsei (Schmitt, 1932), and particularly the eastern Pacific P. hancocki Holthuis, 1951, all sharing many features, especially the reduced incisor process of the mandible, the general shape of the second pair of chelipeds and ambulatory pereiopods, and the telson armament. Based on these features, a new specie

Occurrence of larval ascaridoid nematodes in the Argentinean short-finned squid Illex argentinus from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (off Falkland Islands).

The Argentinean short-finned squid (Illex argentinus) is an oceanic, neritic species widely distributed off the east coast of South America, representing the most abundant commercially exploited squid species in these waters. Despite the great commercial importance of Argentinean short-finned squid as a food resource, and as frozen product exported to Europe, the presence of zoonotic anisakid nematodes, especially in the mantle of the squid, is poorly known. The occurrence and site of infection of larval ascaridoid nematodes in 70 I. argentinus caught off the Falkland Islands were investigated

Uncovering genetic population structure in the Endangered northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) across islands in the Southern Atlantic and Indian oceans.

BACKGROUND: The northern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes moseleyi) is a threatened species, listed as Endangered globally by the IUCN owing to rapid population decreases in the past, combined with a limited distributional range. Their breeding is confined to five islands in the central South Atlantic Ocean (Gough, Nightingale, Inaccessible, Alex (= Middle), and Tristan da Cunha) and two islands in the southern Indian Ocean (Amsterdam and Saint Paul). Non-breeding birds forage widely in these oceans and vagrant individuals have been recorded in the Falkland Islands/Malvinas, South Africa, Kerguele

Record of Renicola sloanei Wright, 1954 (Plagiorchiida: Renicolidae) in the Atlantic puffin Fratercula arctica (Linnaeus, 1758) arrived at the Canary Islands (Spain).

In the winter of 2022-2023, hundreds of the Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica) appeared dead in the coast of the Canary Islands, a rare event considering their cold-living habits, normally occupying the North Atlantic Ocean. In this work, investigation about the parasites present in the Atlantic puffins found in the biggest islands of the Archipelago was carried out from a population portion. Necropsies of 39 birds were made and, during the examination of the urinary tracts, helminths were found. Morphoanatomical analysis under microscope allowed to identify them into Renicola genus with hi

Genus Gambierdiscus in the Canary Islands (NE Atlantic Ocean) with description of Gambierdiscus silvae sp. nov., a new potentially toxic epiphytic benthic dinoflagellate.

Species of the dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus are the cause of Ciguatera Fish Poisoning, common in tropical areas. Nevertheless, until recently this syndrome was not reported in the NE Atlantic Ocean. A new photosynthetic dinoflagellate species, Gambierdiscus silvae sp. nov. is described based on samples taken from tide pools on rocky shores of the Canary Islands (NE Atlantic Ocean). Its morphology was studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species is anterioposteriorly compressed, lenticular in shape with an epitheca slightly higher than the hypotheca. It is round in a

Widespread distribution of rodenticide resistance-conferring mutations in the Vkorc1 gene among house mouse populations in Portuguese Macaronesian islands and Iberian Atlantic areas.

Growing evidence of widespread resistance to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in house mice pose significant challenges to pest control efforts. First-generation ARs were introduced in the early 1950s but resistance to these emerged later that decade. Second-generation rodenticides were then developed, with resistance being reported in the late 1970s. Research has linked resistance to ARs with mutations in the Vkorc1 gene, leading to the use of more toxic and environmentally harmful compounds. In this study, 243 tail tips of house mice from mainland Portugal and Southern Spain, the Azores and

Frequency of the CCR5-delta32 mutation in the Atlantic island populations of Madeira, the Azores, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé e Príncipe.

There is evidence that the CCR5-delta32 mutation confers protection against HIV-1 infection to homozygous individuals. It is believed that this mutation spread through Europe with the Vikings and that it has been subjected to positive selection, leading to a high frequency in Europe (approximately 10%). We carried out the present study to determine the 32-bp deletion allele and genotype frequencies of the CCR5 gene (CCR5-delta32) in the Atlantic island populations of Madeira, the Azores, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé e Principe.
