Increasing ozone over the Atlantic Ocean.

Ship-borne ozone (O3) measurements over the Atlantic Ocean during the period from 1977 to 2002 show that O3 trends in the northern mid-latitudes are small. In contrast, remarkably large O3 trends occur at low latitudes and in the Southern Hemisphere, where near-surface O3 has increased by up to a factor of 2. The likely cause is the substantial increase of anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) associated with energy use in Africa, which has added to NOx from biomass burning and natural sources.

Metabolomic Fingerprinting of Salinispora From Atlantic Oceanic Islands.

Salinispora (Micromonosporaceae) is an obligate marine bacterium genus consisting of three species that share over 99% 16S rRNA identity. The genome and biosynthetic pathways of the members of this genus have been widely investigated due to their production of species-specific metabolites. However, despite the species' high genetic similarity, site-specific secondary metabolic gene clusters have been found in Salinispora strains collected at different locations. Therefore, exploring the metabolic expression of Salinispora recovered from different sites may furnish insights into their environme

Temporal dynamics of Prochlorococcus ecotypes in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

To better understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of Prochlorococcus populations, and how these populations co-vary with the physical environment, we followed monthly changes in the abundance of five ecotypes-two high-light adapted and three low-light adapted-over a 5-year period in coordination with the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) and Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) programs. Ecotype abundance displayed weak seasonal fluctuations at HOT and strong seasonal fluctuations at BATS. Furthermore, stable 'layered' depth distributions, where different Prochlorococcus ecotypes reached maxi

Ascocotyle longa (Digenea: Heterophyidae) infecting dolphins from the Atlantic Ocean.

We report for the first time the infection of dolphins with Ascocotyle longa found in the intestines of three different species, Sotalia guianensis, Steno bredanensis, and Tursiops truncatus gephyreus, which were found washed ashore along the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast. The worms were identified based on morphological and molecular data using the 28S rDNA gene and the COI gene. Specimens of A. longa from the pinniped Otaria flavescens were also analyzed. As the first isolation of A. longa from cetaceans, the present study increases the distribution area and range of definitive h

Miocene ocean circulation shifted expansive oxygen deficient zones to the Atlantic.

Contemporary observations indicate that dissolved oxygen concentrations are generally declining as global temperatures rise, which has broad implications for carbon cycling and the habitable ranges of marine animals. Here, we use the foraminiferal iodine redox tracer to evaluate the distributions of oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) and adjacent low oxygen water masses in the oceans during the Miocene Climatic Optimum ('MCO', 14.7-17 million years ago)-the last time that atmospheric CO2 was consistently higher than today. The Pacific lowest oxygen water masses were confined to a narrow latitudinal

Earlier onset of North Atlantic hurricane season with warming oceans.

Numerous Atlantic basin tropical cyclones have recently developed prior to the official start of hurricane season, including several pre-season landfalls in the continental United States. Pre-season and early-season tropical cyclones disproportionately affect populated landmasses, often producing outsized precipitation impacts. Here we show a significant trend towards earlier onset of tropical cyclone activity in the North Atlantic basin, with threshold dates of the first three percentiles of accumulated cyclone energy shifting earlier at a rate exceeding five days decade-1 since 1979, even co

Methylmercury accumulation in plankton on the continental margin of the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Accumulation of monomethylmercury (MMHg) by plankton is a key process influencing concentrations of this toxic mercury species in marine food webs and seafood. We examined bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MMHg in microseston and four size fractions of zooplankton on the continental shelf, slope, and rise of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF, L/kg) for MMHg in microseston averaged 10(4.3±0.3) among 21 locations, and concentrations were unrelated to those in colocated, filtered surface water. Instead, concentrations and the BAF of MMHg in microseston were relat

Brominated flame retardants in seawater and atmosphere of the Atlantic and the Southern Ocean.

Seawater and air samples were collected aboard the FS Polarstern during the cruises ANT-XXV/1 + 2 in the Atlantic and Southern Ocean in 2008. The particulate and dissolved phase in water and particulate and gaseous phase in air were analyzed separately for nine polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and six non-PBDE brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Air concentrations of 2,3-dibromopropyl-2,4,6-tribromophenyl ether (DPTE) and hexabromobenzene (HBB) in the gaseous and particulate phase (median = 0.56 pg m(-3) for DPTE and 0.92 pg m(-3) for HBB) were comparable to ∑(9)PBDEs (1.0 pg m(-3)). Evidence of Brucella infection in marine mammals in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Between 1983 and 1996 a total of 1386 samples of serum were taken from four species of seal and three species of whale in the waters west of Iceland, the area of pack-ice north-west of Jan Mayen, the northern coast of Norway and the Kola Peninsula, the waters west of Svalbard, and the Barents Sea; they were tested for the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies with an indirect ELISA (protein G conjugate). The positive sera were re-tested with classical brucellosis serological tests, such as the serum agglutination test, the EDTA-modified serum agglutination test, the Rose Bengal test, and the co

Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in sea surface aerosols over the Atlantic Ocean.

The large-scale abundance and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) within the atmosphere remains poorly documented, particularly over oceans. This study explores bacterial loads, diversity, and associated antimicrobial resistance genes in aerosols over the North Atlantic Ocean. Aerosol samples were collected from a ship during a cruise from Brest (France) to Woods Hole (USA) for 24-h periods using a mast-mounted system, with additional one-hour spot samples taken daily and nightly using high-flow rates samplers. The airborne concentrations of bacteria along with 21 ARG subtypes a

The Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) as a candidate sentinel of Atlantic Ocean health.

INTRODUCTION: Seabirds have been historically used to monitor environmental contamination. The aim of the present study was to test the suitability of a species belonging to the Procellariiformes group, the Manx shearwater, Puffinus puffinus, as a sentinel of environmental health, by determining contaminant levels (trace metals and organochlorine compounds) from carcass tissues and by isolating Vibrio spp. and Aeromonas spp. from live specimens. To this end, 35 Puffinus puffinus carcasses wrecked on the north-central coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and two carcasses recovered in

Reduced N2 fixation in the tropical Atlantic Ocean during the warm late Pliocene.

Water column denitrification, a major oceanic nitrogen (N) sink, decreased under past warmer-than-present climates, but the response of N2 fixation, the main oceanic N source, remains unresolved. Here we address this gap using foraminifera-bound N isotope records from the tropical Atlantic spanning the warm late Pliocene, a geological analog for projected 21st century warming. Our records show that tropical North Atlantic N2 fixation was reduced during the late Pliocene and had increased markedly by the late Pleistocene, likely due to an increase in water column denitrification, a process that

Lacaziosis in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus along the coastal Atlantic Ocean, Florida, USA.

This study represents the first systematic study of lacaziosis (lobomycosis) in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus in the Atlantic Ocean along the east-central coast of Florida, USA. Lacaziosis is a chronic infection of the skin caused by the fungus Lacazia loboi, which affects only dolphins and humans. Previous studies have shown a high prevalence (6.8 to 12.0%) of lacaziosis in resident dolphins from the adjacent Indian River Lagoon Estuary (IRL), where the disease is endemic. We examined the prevalence of lacaziosis in this coastal area using photo-identification data collected between

Spatiotemporal patterns of benthic communities on the shallow reefs of Southwestern Atlantic oceanic islands.

Reef ecosystems are among the most diverse marine systems, with benthic communities underpinning trophic structure and habitat complexity. However, long-term dynamics of benthic assemblages in oceanic reefs remain poorly resolved, particularly across isolated tropical systems under different protection regimes. Here, we assessed spatial and temporal variation in benthic community composition across four Brazilian oceanic islands: St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (SP), Rocas Atoll (RA), Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FN), and Trindade Island (TR). Using annual photoquadrat surveys since 201

Marine mercury-methylating microbial communities from coastal to Capbreton Canyon sediments (North Atlantic Ocean).

Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation transforms inorganic mercury to neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) mainly in aquatic anoxic environments. Sampling challenges in marine ecosystems, particularly in submarine canyons, leads to a lack of knowledge about the Hg methylating microbia in marine sediments. A previous study showed an enrichment of mercury species in sediments from the Capbreton Canyon where both geochemical parameters and microbial activities constrained the net MeHg production. In order to characterize Hg-methylating microbial communities from coastal to deeper sediments, we analysed t

Metal Concentrations in Wild-Harvested Phaeophyta Seaweed from the Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands, Spain).

Seaweeds are being consumed more often worldwide and are a source of essential minerals, fiber, vitamins, amino acids, and various bioactive compounds that have many beneficial effects on human health. However, marine pollution and the high capacity of seaweed to absorb metals may mean this food can also be dangerous to human health. The concentrations of some trace elements (B, Ba, Fe, Ni, Li, and V) and toxic metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) were determined in various species of wild seaweeds in the Phaeophyta group of brown algae from the Atlantic Ocean. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission sp

Reviewing biodiversity and epidemiological aspects of anisakid nematodes from the North-east Atlantic Ocean.

This review provides an inventory of the biodiversity of the anisakid species identified so far from fish and marine mammals of the NE Atlantic Ocean. The paper reviews and discusses various taxonomical and epidemiological aspects related to biodiversity assessment, with emphasis on: (1) taxa recognized as 'biological species' based on molecular/genetic markers; (2) current molecular/genetic approaches to identify the species at different developmental stages; (3) ecological data related to the actual geographical distribution and definitive host preferences of the species; (4) their distribut

Reproductive cycle and fecundity of the bonnethead Sphyrna tiburo L. from the northwest Atlantic Ocean.

The present study examined temporal changes in plasma sex hormone concentrations and the morphology and histology of reproductive organs in mature northwest Atlantic (NWA) bonnetheads Sphyrna tiburo L. to characterize reproductive cycle, breeding periodicity and fertility in this still poorly studied population. Progressive increases in testis width, epididymis head width, plasma testosterone (T) concentrations, and occurrence of mature spermatozoa were observed in male S. tiburo from June to September, demonstrating that spermatogenesis occurs during the summer. Nonetheless, increases in maxi
