Reviews of environmental contamination and toxicology1995eng
Chronically exposed workers in chemical plants have revealed no increased incidence of benign or malignant disease attributable to atrazine. Some case-control studies showed a slight increase of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) incidence while others were negative. Weighted evidence supports no causal association of malignant changes in farming populations with atrazine. Two studies on a rural population suggested an increase of ovarian tumors in exposed women. Neither statistics nor exposure data are satisfactory, however, and no other studies present supporting evidence. New studies under clearl

Atrazine [6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] inhibits photosystem II (PSII) and is commonly used to control weeds in maize. It has been found that addition of sodium salicylate (sodium 2-hydroxybenzoate; NaSA) increased the postemergence herbicidal activity of atrazine against dicotyledonous weeds. NaSA also potentiated the activity of bentazon, another PSII-inhibiting herbicide. NaSA increased atrazine activity when applied either as a tank mix or up to 96 h prior to atrazine application. Other salicylates and the plant disease resistance inducers acibenzolar-S-me

This study focused on whether or not atrazine could be degraded by indigenous groundwater bacteria as part of an in situ remediation approach. Groundwater was taken from an unconfined middle upper chalk site where concentrations of atrazine and nitrate were typically in the ranges 0.02-0.2 microg litre-1 and 11.6-25.1 mg NO3-N litre-1 respectively. Sacrificial batch studies were performed using this groundwater spiked with atrazine at a concentration of 10 microg litre-1 in conjunction with a minimal mineral salts liquid (Glu-MMSL) medium which contained glucose as the sole carbon source. This paper presents the study of the electrochemical oxidation of the pesticide atrazine at a Ti/Ru(0.3)Ti(0.7)O(2) dimensionally stable anodes (DSA). The effect of using different supporting electrolytes (NaCl, NaOH, NaNO(3), NaClO(4), H(2)SO(4) and Na(2)SO(4)) during the galvanostatic electrolysis of atrazine was investigated. It was observed that the removal of atrazine and total organic carbon (TOC) was only achieved at appreciable rates when NaCl was used as the supporting electrolyte, due to the oxidising species formed in this electrolyte (e.g. ClO(-)). Variation of the NaCl concentrati

The ability of rhizosphere of four plant species to promote the degradation of charcoal-fixed atrazine and simazine in cement blocks of a long-term contaminated soil when mixed with a normal soil at 1:1 ratio was tested. Of the four selected plants viz., rye grass (Lolium perenne), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacae), Pennisetum (Pennisetum clandestinum) and a spring onion (Allium sp.) used in this study, only P. clandestinum was able to survive in herbicide contaminated soil while other plants died within few days after germination/transplanting. Both atrazine and simazine were degraded at a fa

Atrazine, a common water contaminant in the U.S., has been associated with adverse birth outcomes in previous studies. This study aimed to determine if atrazine concentrations in drinking water are associated with adverse birth outcomes including small for gestational age (SGA), term low birth weight (term LBW), very low birth weight (VLBW), preterm birth (PTB), and very preterm birth (VPTB). This study included 14,445 live singleton births from Ohio communities served by 22 water systems enrolled in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Atrazine Monitoring Program between 2006 and 2008.

Atrazine (ATZ) is one of the most widely used herbicides and is highly scrutinized due to its environmental impact. Given its extensive use, ATZ is likely to be exposed to high-temperature conditions such as those encountered during wildfires, incineration, or thermal desorption processes. However, there are limited experimental data on the thermal decomposition of ATZ. The present study investigates the decomposition of ATZ in a flow reactor constructed of α-alumina at temperatures between 400 and 800 °C. At temperatures above 400 °C, thermal decomposition was observed to occur and the format

Erythema multiforme is an acute hypersensitivity eruption with sharply demarcated papules and plaques. It has many known causes, from herpes simplex virus and drugs to malignancy and environmental factors. Although other herbicides have been linked to erythema multiforme, no previous reports have described a link with atrazine. We present a 24-year-old man with difficulty breathing, bilateral eye pain with redness, and a diffuse rash consistent with erythema multiforme following occupational exposure to atrazine.

Use of the herbicide atrazine (ATR) is banned in the European Union; yet, it is still widely used in the USA and Australia. ATR is known to alter testosterone and oestrogen production and thus reproductive characteristics in numerous species. In this proof of concept study, we examined the effect of ATR exposure, at a supra-environmental dose (5 mg/kg bw/day), beginning on E9.5 in utero, prior to sexual differentiation of the reproductive tissues, until 26 weeks of age, on the development of the mouse penis. Notably, this is the first study to specifically investigate whether ATR can affect pe

White leaf spot (Neopseudocercosporella capsellae) poses a significant threat to canola (rapeseed, Brassica napus) production globally, particularly in Australia. Histological studies were undertaken under controlled-environment room conditions on triazine-tolerant (TT) cultivars Crusher TT with moderate resistance and Thunder TT with high susceptibility to white leaf spot to determine how atrazine and the timing of its application affect (i) the disease severity as measured by the percentage of leaf yellowed area, (ii) the rate of conidial germination, (iii) the rate of conidial collapse, (iv

Persulfate (PS) is widely used for environmental remediation, but its organic contaminant removal performance strongly depends on its activation. In this study, we demonstrate that pyrite (FeS2) can more effectively activate PS than the commonly used FeSO4 for atrazine degradation. When 3.0 mM of PS and 4.2 mM of iron salts were used, the atrazine degradation efficiency of FeS2/PS was 1.4 times that of FeSO4/PS, while the amount of consumed PS in case of FeS2 was only 53% of that by FeSO4. The better PS activation performance of FeS2 could be attributed to its slow and sustainable release of d

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of exposure to atrazine on meiosis and spermatogenesis in adult male mice.
METHODS: We divided 16 adult male Institute for Cancer Research (ICR) mice into a solvent control and an atrazine exposure group of an equal number and intraperitoneally injected with solvent dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and atrazine at 100 mg/kg/d, respectively. After 4 weeks of treatment, we obtained the body and testis weights of the mice, observed the changes in the testicular histomorphology, examined the cell apoptosis in the testis tissue, and determined the expressions of meios

Previous literature has suggested a link between maternal exposure to atrazine (the most commonly used herbicide in the US) and risk for gastroschisis (a birth defect that involves incomplete closure of the abdominal wall). Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between maternal atrazine exposure and gastroschisis risk by maternal age. We analyzed data for 1,161 cases with isolated gastroschisis and 8,390 controls delivered in Texas from 1999 through 2008. We estimated atrazine exposure based on maternal county of residence and data from the United States Geological Survey. Logistic re

Atrazine (ATR) is a commonly found herbicide contaminant in water bodies across the United States. In this study, native freshwater mussels (Elliptio complanata) were investigated to determine histopathological effects and bioaccumulation of ATR under laboratory conditions. Mussels were collected from the Rice Creek Field Station, Oswego, NY, and were exposed to two different concentrations of ATR (15 and 150 μg/L) for 4 weeks. Histopathological phenotypes induced by ATR include reduced or no ciliary epithelium, ciliary cells merged or completely absent, skeletal rods and connective tissue red

Atrazine (ATR), one of the most prevalent herbicides used worldwide, has been associated with various environmental health concerns, including its potential role in promoting neurodegenerative diseases. Considering the pivotal role of metal homeostasis in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders, this study investigated the neuroprotective effects of copper supplementation in mitigating the adverse impacts of ATR in Parkinson's disease (PD). Our results reveal that ATR exposure disrupts copper and iron homeostasis within the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), leading to enhanced

The chloro-S-triazine herbicides (i.e., atrazine, simazine, cyanazine) constitute the largest group of herbicides sold in the United States. Despite their extensive usage, relatively little is known about the possible human-health effects and mechanism(s) of action of these compounds. Previous studies in our laboratory have shown that the chlorotriazines disrupt the hormonal control of ovarian cycles. Results from these studies led us to hypothesize that these herbicides disrupt endocrine function primarily through their action on the central nervous system. To evaluate this hypothesis, we exa

Atrazine (ATR) is a globally used herbicide with a long environmental half-life, resulting in its widespread persistence in various environmental media. ATR has been recognized as an environmental endocrine disruptor. The thyroid gland, the largest endocrine organ in the human body, regulates essential physiological processes, including metabolism, growth, and development, through the secretion of thyroid hormones. Accumulating evidence indicates that ATR can adversely affect thyroid function through multiple pathways, including disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, interferen

Atrazine (ATR) is a commonly used agricultural herbicide that has been the subject of epidemiologic studies assessing its relation to reproductive health problems. This review evaluates both the consistency and the quality of epidemiologic evidence testing the hypothesis that ATR exposure, at usually encountered levels, is a risk factor for birth defects, small for gestational age birth weight, prematurity, miscarriages, and problems of fetal growth and development. We followed the current methodological guidelines for systematic reviews by using two independent researchers to identify, retrie

This study examined the sorption of atrazine by hydroxy-Fe interlayered montmorillonite (FeMt) and its hydroquinone (FeMtHQ), citrate (FeMtCt) and catechol (FeMtCC) complexes as well as by hydroxy-Al interlayered montmorillonite (AlMt) and its hydroquinone (AlMtHQ) and citrate (AlMtCt) complexes. Found among the clays were sorption distribution coefficients (K(d)) ranging from 24 to 123 mL g(-1) and maximum sorption (M) ranging from 2.2 to 16.8 microg g(-1). Both K(d) and M decreased in the order of FeMtCC > FeMtHQ > AlMtHQ > (AlMt = FeMt) > (AlMtCt = FeMtCt). The pH was negatively correlated
