The attentional blink in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a disorder of visual acuity in one eye, thought to arise from suppression by the other eye during development of the visual cortex. In the attentional blink, the second of two targets (T2) in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) stream is difficult to detect and identify when it appears shortly but not immediately after the first target (T1). We investigated the attentional blink seen through amblyopic eyes and found that it was less finely tuned in time than when the 12 amblyopic observers viewed the stimuli with their preferred eyes. T2 performance was slightly better throu

Cortical sources of the auditory attentional blink.

Attentional blink (AB) refers to the situation where correctly identifying a target impairs the processing of a subsequent probe in a sequence of stimuli. Although the AB often coincides with a modulation of scalp-recorded cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs), the neural sources of this effect remain unclear. In two separate experiments, we used classical LORETA analysis recursively applied (CLARA) to estimate the neural sources of ERPs elicited by an auditory probe when it immediately followed an auditory target (i.e., AB condition), when no auditory target was present (i.e., no-AB condi

The Roles of Alpha Oscillations in Attentional Blink.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to impaired processing of a second target (T2) when presented 200-500 msec after a first target (T1) in a rapid serial visual presentation stream. There is converging evidence that alpha oscillations (8-12 Hz) may be critical for AB performance, as they can regulate attentional control and suppress distractor interference. This study investigated the effects of neuromodulation of alpha activities via transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on AB. Alpha tACS may either reduce the AB magnitude at intermediate lags by modulating inhibitory control (th

Dynamics of the attentional blink in preverbal infants.

In the first months postterm, human infants are traditionally viewed as passive to their environment, unable to focus or sustain attention on specific objects. Here, we asked whether 4-mo-old infants could engage their attention strongly enough in a visual task to block the perception of a subsequent interesting stimulus-a phenomenon known as attentional blink, which in adults reflects a serial processing bottleneck for accessing a central workspace. We presented three successive visual events: a central teddy bear (T1) followed by a lateralized face and scrambled face (T2) at varying stimulus

Emotional induced attentional blink in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although an attentional bias for threat is implicated in anxiety disorders, such a bias has not been consistently observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This inconsistency is partially due to a paucity of studies employing robust attentional tasks. The emotional attentional blink (EAB), a phenomenon in which the brief appearance of a task-irrelevant, emotionally arousing image captures attention to such an extent that target stimuli cannot be detected, have increasing been employed as more robust tasks of attentional biases. METHODS: In the present study, patients with O

The attentional blink reveals sluggish attentional shifting in adolescents with specific language impairment.

Rapid processing deficits have been the subject of much debate in the literature on specific language impairment (SLI). Hari and Renvall (2001) [Hari, R. & Renvall, H. (2001). Impaired processing of rapid stimulus sequences in dyslexia. Trends in cognitive sciences, 5, 525-532.] proposed that the source of this deficit can be attributed to sluggish attentional shifting abilities. That is, more time is required to shift attention between stimuli. To test this claim, 26 adolescents with SLI (divided into two subgroups to control for differences in non-verbal intelligence) and 14 controls were pr

Visual attentional blink in dyslexic children: Parameterizing the deficit.

The parameters generated by a curve fitting method on the visual attentional blink (AB) of 14 dyslexic and 14 control children were compared. The two groups differed on AB minimum parameters, whereas both AB duration and AB amplitude parameters were the same. The results suggest that low AB minimum is associated with poor reading. Moreover, phonological awareness was found to correlate with visual AB parameters in the dyslexic group. Overall, the present study provides new methodological insights regarding the assessment of the AB and visual sequential processing in relation to reading disorde

Neural correlates of conscious perception in the attentional blink.

If attending to a target in a rapid stream of visual stimuli within the next 400 ms or so, a second target in the stream is frequently not detected by an observer. This so-called attentional blink can provide a comparison of neural signals elicited by identical stimuli that, in one condition, reach conscious awareness and, in the other, fail to be selected for awareness. In the present study, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), differences of neural activation were studied in an attentional blink experiment in order to identify brain regions putatively involved in

Attentional blink in adolescents with varying levels of impulsivity.

We explore the temporal attention function in a non-clinical sample of adolescents varying in impulsivity, as assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. In a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task, in which two targets (T(1) and T(2)) were presented in close temporal proximity among distractors, participants tried to identify T(1) and detect T(2) in one (dual-task) experiment and only to detect T(2) in a second, control (single-task) experiment. The sensitivity of T(2) detection was analyzed using signal detection theory. The attentional blink -- the impairment in T(2) detection following t

Attentional blink differences between adolescent dyslexic and normal readers.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the possibility that dyslexic individuals require more working memory resources than normal readers to shift attention from stimulus to stimulus. To test this hypothesis, normal and dyslexic adolescents participated in a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation experiment (Raymond, Shapiro, & Arnell, 1992). Surprisingly, the result showed that the participants with dyslexia produced a shallower attentional blink than normal controls. This result may be interpreted as showing differences in the way the two groups encode information in episodic memory. They also fi

Reduced attentional blink for gambling-related stimuli in problem gamblers.

Although there is considerable information concerning the attentional biases in psychoactive substance use and misuse, much less is known about the contribution of attentional processing in problem gambling. The aim of this study was to examine whether problem gamblers (PrG) exhibit attentional bias at the level of the encoding processing stage. Forty PrG and 35 controls participated in an attentional blink (AB) paradigm in which they were required to identify both gambling and neutral words that appeared in a rapid serial visual presentation. The attentional blink in typically developing and reading-disabled children.

This study's research question was whether selective visual attention, and specifically the attentional blink (AB) as operationalized by a dual target rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task, can explain individual differences in word reading (WR) and reading-related phonological performances in typically developing children and reading-disabled subgroups. A total of 407 Dutch school children (Grades 3-6) were classified either as typically developing (n = 302) or as belonging to one of three reading-disabled subgroups: reading disabilities only (RD-only, n = 69), both RD and attention pr

No evidence for a prolonged attentional blink in developmental dyslexia.

When two targets are presented within 500 msec of each other in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), the accuracy of second target identification is significantly reduced; a phenomenon termed the attentional blink. Recent studies have reported that children and adults with dyslexia exhibit deficits tied to the attentional blink; however, some ambiguity remains as to the nature of these impairments and how they relate to reading difficulties. The current study aimed to address these issues by examining attentional blink deficits in relation to orthographic, phonological, and fluency aspects

Attentional blink deficits observed in dyslexia depend on task demands.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to a deficit in the ability to identify a second target following a first target when both appear randomly within a rapid sequence of distractor items. The AB of five adults with dyslexia (ADys) was compared with that of a group of normal adult readers. Two tasks were completed which differed in the conceptual category of the target items (a red digit or letter) relative to the distractor items (all black digits). In the digit condition, all ADys cases showed a longer AB compared to the control group. In the letter condition, all participants showed improvemen

The disruptive effects of pain on the early allocation of attentional resources: An attentional blink study.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that pain dampens attentional processes. However, much of this work has been based on higher-order attentional tasks that involve only spatial attention. Other aspects of the process through which pain engages and holds attention are relatively understudied, in particular, temporal attention. The present set of studies explored how naturally occurring pain (i.e. acute headache) and pain-valenced stimuli affect the ability to recall the second of two targets presented in rapid succession. METHODS: Across both experiments participants were required to indica

Information processing bottlenecks in macaque posterior parietal cortex: an attentional blink?

When two brief stimuli are presented in rapid succession, our ability to attend and recognize the second stimulus is impaired if our attentional resources are devoted to processing the first. Such inability (termed the "attentional blink" in human studies) arises around 200-500 ms following the onset of the first stimulus. We trained two monkeys on a delayed-match-to-sample task where both the location and orientation of two successively presented grating patches had to be matched. When the delay between the two gratings was varied, monkey's behavioral performance (d') was affected in a way th

No differential attentional blink in dyslexia after controlling for baseline sensitivity.

Previous research has associated a prolonged attentional blink (AB) with adult dyslexia [Hari, R., Valta, M., & Uutela, K. (1999). Prolonged attentional dwell time in dyslexic adults. Neuroscience Letters, 271, 202-204]. The AB represents a limitation in temporal information processing, estimated as the time interval between two targets necessary for accurate recall (e.g., [Raymond, J. E., Shapiro, K. L., & Arnell, K. M. (1992). Temporary suppression of visual processing in an RSVP task: An attentional blink? Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 18, 849-860]).

Personal names and the attentional blink: a visual "cocktail party" effect.

Four experiments were carried out to investigate an early- versus late-selection explanation for the attentional blink (AB). In both Experiments 1 and 2, 3 groups of participants were required to identify a noun (Experiment 1) or a name (Experiment 2) target (experimental conditions) and then to identify the presence or absence of a 2nd target (probe), which was their own name, another name, or a specified noun from among a noun distractor stream (Experiment 1) or a name distractor stream (Experiment 2). The conclusions drawn are that individuals do not experience an AB for their own names but

A key role of the hippocampal P3 in the attentional blink.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to an impaired identification of target stimuli (T2), which are presented shortly after a prior target (T1) within a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream. It has been suggested that the AB is related to a failed transfer of T2 into working memory and that hippocampus (HC) and entorhinal cortex (EC) are regions crucial for this transfer. Since the event-related P3 component has been linked to inhibitory processes, we hypothesized that the hippocampal P3 elicited by T1 may impact on T2 processing within HC and EC. To test this hypothesis, we reanalyzed

Testing the skill-based approach: Consolidation strategy impacts attentional blink performance.

Humans can learn simple new tasks very quickly. This ability suggests that people can reuse previously learned procedural knowledge when it applies to a new context. We have proposed a modeling approach based on this idea and used it to create a model of the attentional blink (AB). The main idea of the skill-based approach is that models are not created from scratch but, instead, built up from reusable pieces of procedural knowledge (skills). This approach not only provides an explanation for the fast learning of simple tasks but also shows much promise to improve certain aspects of cognitive
