Intensity and frequency discrimination monitored by evoked response audiometry: clinical application.

Delta 1 and delta f repetitive stimuli superimposed on continuous 0.5-, 1- and 4-kHz carrier tones were administered to 20 normally hearing persons, 8 adults with sensorineural hearing loss, 10 adults with conductive hearing loss and 22 children subjected to evoked response audiometry (ERA) for assessment of hearing acuity. The intensity modulation depth ranged from + 1 to 10 dB. In the subjects with normal hearing and in the adult patients, three carrier tone levels were used whenever possible: 20, 40, and 60 dB SL. The frequency modulation depth ranged from -1 to -10% of the carrier tone fre

Data Acquisition and Analysis In Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry In Mice.

Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) is of central relevance in the clinical neurophysiology. As other evoked potential (EP) techniques, such as visually evoked potentials (VEPs) or somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), the auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) are triggered by the repetitive presentation of identical stimuli, the electroencephalographic (EEG) response of which is subsequently averaged resulting in distinct positive (p) and negative (n) deflections. In humans, both the amplitude and the latency of individual peaks can be used to characterize alterations in synchronization

Clinical interpretation of brainstem evoked response audiometry abnormalities in cochlear pathology.

This investigation involved 45 patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL): 24 with Meniere's disease, 18 with acoustic trauma, and 3 with SNHL due to ototoxic drugs. They all underwent pure tone audiometry and standard brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). In patients without wave I in auditory brainstem response, electrocochelography (ECochG) was performed. The findings are presented showing that cochlear lesions (beside threshold elevation) cause latency prolongation of wave I, III and V relative to normal latencies at the actual click hearing level. At high stimulation levels, t

[Agreement between auditory threshold calculated from cortical evoked response audiometry and tone audiometry in occupational hearing loss].

In a group of 126 men the authors evaluated the auditory threshold from cortical ERA findings and comparison with their threshold sound audiometry. The mean age of the patients means = 52.5 years (min. = 25 years, max. = 69 years, s = 8.95). Noise exposure means = 16.5 years (min. = 4 years, max. = 30 years, s = 4.5). In 79.3% the men worked as miners in uranium mines, other mining occupations were represented only by small numbers. The arithmetic mean of the total percentage hearing loss (calculated according to Fowler) means = 49.7% (min. = 17%, max. = 100%, s = 15). The cumulative frequency

Dilemmas in auditory assessment of developmentally retarded children using behavioural observation audiometry and brain stem evoked response audiometry.

The records of 94 consecutive developmentally retarded children with speech retardation and suspected hearing loss who underwent auditory assessment by both conventional behavioural observation audiometry (BOA) and brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA) were analysed. In 54 children (57.4 per cent) there was good agreement between the results of both techniques leading to a clearcut diagnosis. In 22 children a diagnosis was possible only by the results of BERA as the results of BOA were inconclusive. Of the remaining 18 children, two groups could be identified whose results posed a dilem

Auditory evaluation of the microcephalic children with brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA).

Microcephaly implies a reduced occipito-frontal circumference (< 2 Standard Deviation of normal) and therefore a small brain size, which is usually associated with different neurodeficit. Intactness of the auditory pathway in microcephalic as well as normal children was assessed by Brain stem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) to locate the exact site of lesion resulting in the auditory impairment, so that appropriate early rehabilitative measures can be taken. The study revealed that absolute peak latency of wave V, inter peak latencies of III-V and I-V were significantly higher (P- value < 0.

Association of Cord Ferritin Levels with Brain Stem Evoked Response Audiometry in Newborns.

Iron is an important nutrient and it plays a pivotal role in myelin formation and neurotransmitter synthesis, thus contributing to normal neurological activity. Ferritin is a reliable indicator of the tissue iron stores and in-utero stores can be well measured by cord ferritin levels. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of umbilical cord ferritin levels (CFL) on the brain stem evoked response audiometry (BERA) This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care centre of North India with a sample size of 100 inborn neonates. After evaluation of the umbilic

Screening for congenital hearing impairment with brainstem evoked response audiometry in isolated orofacial cleft.

Brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) is the most established and recommended objective audiometric method for the clinical diagnosis of hearing impairment in high-risk infants. It is unclear whether infants with orofacial clefts meet the criteria for the high-risk group. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the need for diagnostic BERA in infants with cleft palate with or without cleft lip by assessing the predisposition to and diagnosis of congenital hearing impairment. Data from 122 patients treated at a single cleft centre were evaluated. BERA was conducted at the time of palate

Accuracy of cortical evoked response audiometry in the identification of non-organic hearing loss.

Cortical evoked response audiometry (CERA) has been used to identify the presence of a non-organic component in cases where compensation for hearing disability is claimed. This study aims at verifying the magnitude of discrepancy between thresholds estimated by CERA and by pure-tone audiometry (PTA). Results from 204 claimants (408 ears) with reliable PTA and CERA records showed mean discrepancy values between PTA and CERAT of less than 5 dB at high frequencies. Over 83.2% of claimants had a CERAT and PTA threshold discrepancy within 10 dB. Results suggested that while CERA threshold measureme

Brain evoked response audiometry recording from the mastoid and earlobe electrodes in normal-hearing children.

BACKGROUND: Electrode placement plays an important role in Brain Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) recording. It is important to measure wave latency and amplitude accurately in determining hearing level. Young children usually have limited mastoid area, and in certain condition, it is often difficult to place the vibrator and electrodes coinciding on the mastoid. Therefore, earlobe electrode is considered as an alternative placement. PURPOSE: The aim was to correlate the wave V latency and amplitude on the mastoid and earlobe electrodes in BERA recording. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study wa

Oto-acoustic emissions and brainstem evoked response audiometry in patients of tinnitus with normal hearing.

INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound that results completely from activity within the nervous system without any corresponding mechanical, vibratory activity within the cochlea, and not related to external stimulation of any kind. It disrupts the daily life of 1 out of every 200 adults. The source of tinnitus generation is not limited to the peripheral auditory system. However, there are abnormalities seen in BERA in tinnitus patients depicting auditory pathway involvement. Oto-acoustic emissions are mechanical vibrations generated in the cochlea, which are evaluated by

Brainstem evoked response audiometry: an investigatory tool in detecting hepatic encephalopathy in decompensated chronic liver disease.

It is estimated that globally there is a marked increase in liver disease with reports of rising morbidity and mortality, particularly in younger age groups. Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) was recorded in 60 decompensated chronic liver disease (DCLD) subjects who fulfilled the selection criteria and compared to 60 age and gender matched healthy subjects with normal liver functions. DCLD subjects were divided into two inter groups based on presence or absence of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Group 1 comprises of 30 subjects of grade- I HE and Group 2 included 30 subjects without hepa

Auditory dysfunction and perinatal risk factors in high-risk infants: Insights from brainstem evoked response audiometry.

Congenital hearing impairment is a major developmental disability, especially among infants with perinatal risk factors. This cross-sectional study evaluated 150 high-risk neonates in a NICU using Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA). Abnormal BERA findings were observed in 30% of infants, with significant associations to severe hyperbilirubinemia, perinatal asphyxia and prolonged mechanical ventilation (p<0.001). Mean wave V latency was notably prolonged in infants with abnormal results. Thus, we show the importance of universal newborn hearing screening, particularly in high-risk grou
