Auditory Acuity and Response to Altered Auditory Feedback in Children with and without Rhotic Distortions.

Introduction Children with residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) exhibit speech production patterns that differ from their dialect community and persist beyond the typical developmental window. Differences in sensory acuity or sensory feedback response may contribute to these persisting deviations. Methods To assess this, the present study evaluated response to altered auditory feedback in 46 children aged 9-15 who represented two groups: children with RSSD (5 female, 15 male) and children without RSSD (13 female, 13 male). Participants heard their speech in near real-time with the first forma

Temporal acuity is preserved in the auditory midbrain of aged mice.

Impaired temporal resolution of the central auditory system has long been suggested to contribute to speech understanding deficits in the elderly. However, it has been difficult to differentiate between direct age-related central deficits and indirect effects of confounding peripheral age-related hearing loss on temporal resolution. To differentiate this, we measured temporal acuity in the inferior colliculus (IC) of aged CBA/J and C57BL/6 mice, as a model of aging with and without concomitant hearing loss. We used two common measures of auditory temporal processing: gap detection as a measure

Auditory temporal acuity in normally achieving and learning-disabled college students.

Recent research has suggested that deficits in several metalinguistic/phonological abilities, such as short-term verbal memory and phoneme segmentation, may be etiologic factors in specific reading disability, and it has been speculated that these weaknesses may result from a more fundamental deficit in the processing of temporal, auditory stimuli. This study examined the auditory temporal processing skills of reading-disabled, math-disabled, and normally achieving college students. The math-disabled group was included to control for the possibility that poor temporal processing is a "marker"

Auditory-perceptual acuity in rhotic misarticulation: baseline characteristics and treatment response.

The rhotic sound /r/ is one of the latest-emerging sounds in English, and many children receive treatment for residual errors affecting /r/ that persist past the age of 9. Auditory-perceptual abilities of children with residual speech errors are thought to be different from their typically developing peers. This study examined auditory-perceptual acuity in children with residual speech errors affecting /r/ and the relation of these skills to production accuracy, both before and after a period of treatment incorporating visual biofeedback. Identification of items along an /r/-/w/ continuum was

Auditory acuity and musical ability in young adults with high schizotypal traits.

BACKGROUND: Despite auditory cognition dysfunction being consistently found in people with schizophrenia, the evidence from non-clinical individuals with schizotypy is rare and inconsistent. No studies thus far have comprehensively assessed the association among auditory perception, musical cognition, and schizotypy in non-clinical samples. AIM: We aimed to explore abnormalities in auditory skills, from basic perception to musical ability, among individuals with schizotypal traits. METHOD: An extreme-group design was adopted. Sixty-six participants from the schizotypy and control groups were

Visual Temporal Acuity Is Related to Auditory Speech Perception Abilities in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant improvements in speech perception abilities following cochlear implantation, many prelingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) recipients continue to rely heavily on visual information to develop speech and language. Increased reliance on visual cues for understanding spoken language could lead to the development of unique audiovisual integration and visual-only processing abilities in these individuals. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that good CI performers, as indexed by auditory-only speech perception abilities, have different patterns of visual corte

Large cross-sectional study of presbycusis reveals rapid progressive decline in auditory temporal acuity.

The auditory system relies on extraordinarily precise timing cues for the accurate perception of speech, music, and object identification. Epidemiological research has documented the age-related progressive decline in hearing sensitivity that is known to be a major health concern for the elderly. Although smaller investigations indicate that auditory temporal processing also declines with age, such measures have not been included in larger studies. Temporal gap detection thresholds (TGDTs; an index of auditory temporal resolution) measured in 1071 listeners (aged 18-98 years) were shown to dec

Uniform degradation of auditory acuity in subjects with normal hearing leads to unequal precedence effects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether a controlled unilateral reduction in auditory acuity at the higher audiometric frequencies would have an effect on the variability in responses obtained on a task designed to measure the precedence effect. DESIGN: The experiment was conducted with participants located in a large sound proof, anechoic room, and psychophysical tests were conducted with long-duration noise burst stimuli. Reduction in auditory acuity was created by inserting a specially designed earplug in the ear of participants with normal hearing. The earplugs produce

Developmental auditory deprivation in one ear impairs brainstem binaural processing and reduces spatial hearing acuity.

Early sensory experience can exert lasting perceptual consequences. For example, a brief period of auditory deprivation early in life can lead to persistent spatial hearing deficits. Some forms of hearing loss (i.e., conductive; CHL) can distort acoustical cues needed for spatial hearing, which depend on inputs from both ears. We hypothesize that asymmetric acoustic input during development disrupts auditory circuits that integrate binaural information. Here, we identify prolonged maturation of the binaural auditory brainstem in the guinea pig by tracking auditory evoked potentials across deve

Auditory and visual distractors disrupt multisensory temporal acuity in the crossmodal temporal order judgment task.

The ability to synthesize information across multiple senses is known as multisensory integration and is essential to our understanding of the world around us. Sensory stimuli that occur close in time are likely to be integrated, and the accuracy of this integration is dependent on our ability to precisely discriminate the relative timing of unisensory stimuli (crossmodal temporal acuity). Previous research has shown that multisensory integration is modulated by both bottom-up stimulus features, such as the temporal structure of unisensory stimuli, and top-down processes such as attention. How

A Study of Hearing Acuity and the Health of the External Auditory Canal Among Earphone Users in Central India.

Background and objective The pervasive use of earphones has raised concerns about its potential impact on hearing acuity and the health of the external auditory canal (EAC). This study aimed to investigate these effects in a sample of individuals in Central India to better understand the associated risks. Materials and methods This observational cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, Sawangi Wardha. A total of 130 participants aged 15-35 years were divided into two groups: 65 earphone users and 65 non-earphone users. T

Temporal order and processing acuity of visual, auditory, and tactile perception in developmentally dyslexic young adults.

We studied the temporal acuity of 16 developmentally dyslexic young adults in three perceptual modalities. The control group consisted of 16 age- and IQ-matched normal readers. Two methods were used. In the temporal order judgment (TOJ) method, the stimuli were spatially separate fingertip indentations in the tactile system, tone bursts of different pitches in audition, and light flashes in vision. Participants indicated which one of two stimuli appeared first. To test temporal processing acuity (TPA), the same 8-msec nonspeech stimuli were presented as two parallel sequences of three stimulus

[Test construction, analysis and trial of the Heidelberg Sound Discrimination Test for measuring auditory-kinesthetic perceptual discrimination acuity].

The provisional trial was carried out in a sample of 133 second- and 139 fourth-graders from the Heidelberg area. The HD-LT was subjected to an item selection, test criteria were ascertained and temporary percentile norms for the second and fourth grades were established. High item difficulty resulted for both grades, i.e. the test was relatively easy. Test criteria were generally satisfactory. Significant correlations were found in both grades between the HD-LT and the children's spelling ability. The HD-LT accounted for 30% of the spelling variance among second-graders as compared to 10% of

Auditory Perception and Ultrasound Biofeedback Treatment Outcomes for Children With Residual /ɹ/ Distortions: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Purpose This study evaluated whether outcomes from treatment, which includes ultrasound visual feedback (UVF), would be more or less effective when combined with auditory perception training for children with residual /ɹ/ errors. Method Children ages 8-16 years with /ɹ/ distortions participated in speech therapy that included real-time UVF of the tongue. Thirty-eight participants were randomized to speech therapy conditions that included a primary focus on articulation using UVF or a condition that included auditory perceptual training plus UVF (incorporating category goodness judgments and se

Mind the Gap: Two Dissociable Mechanisms of Temporal Processing in the Auditory System.

UNLABELLED: High temporal acuity of auditory processing underlies perception of speech and other rapidly varying sounds. A common measure of auditory temporal acuity in humans is the threshold for detection of brief gaps in noise. Gap-detection deficits, observed in developmental disorders, are considered evidence for "sluggish" auditory processing. Here we show, in a mouse model of gap-detection deficits, that auditory brain sensitivity to brief gaps in noise can be impaired even without a general loss of central auditory temporal acuity. Extracellular recordings in three different subdivisio

Sex differences in auditory brainstem response audiograms from vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro and wild-type Long-Evans rats.

Rats are highly social creatures that produce ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during social interactions. Brattleboro rats, a Long-Evans derived rat that lacks vasopressin (AVP) due to a mutation in the Avp gene, exhibit atypical social behavior, including fewer USVs with altered spectrotemporal characteristics during social interactions. It is unclear why Brattleboro rats produce atypical USVs, but one factor could be differences in auditory acuity between them and wild-type Long Evans rats with functional vasopressin. Previous studies have suggested a link between increased levels of AVP and
