A Characterization of Central Auditory Processing in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that people with Parkinson's disease (PwPs) may experience challenges in both peripheral and central auditory processing, although findings are inconsistent across studies. Due to the diversity of auditory measures used, there is a need for standardized, replicable hearing assessments to clarify which aspects of audition are impacted in PWPs and whether they are linked to motor and non-motor symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To characterize auditory processes and their possible alteration in PwPs. To address this, we collected a comprehensive set of standardized measures of

Central auditory processing in children with sickle cell disease.

The complexity of sickle cell disease (SCD) goes beyond hematological manifestations, affecting different organs and systems, including auditory system. We aimed to assess Central Auditory Processing (CAP) abilities in children with SCD as well as to detect risk factors for Auditory Processing Disorders (APD) in children with SCD. A diagnostic observational cross sectional study that included thirty-three patients aged 6-16 years with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD. Demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics were collected. Audiological testing included tympanometry, pure tone audiomet

Central auditory battery testing in brain stem disease.

The CAT scan and the BERA have revolutionized the practice of otology. There is a tendency to accept a negative scan report as indicating a lack of pathology. The authors have found cases where central battery testing has indicated progressing brain stem disease in the presence of a normal CAT scan. In one case, the abnormal test preceded a hemiplegia by two weeks. This raises the possibility of delaying or aborting an infarct if the correct diagnosis is made early.

Findings on the Central Auditory Functions of Endemic Disease Control Agents.

This study aimed to assess the central auditory functions of endemic disease control agents. This cross-sectional cohort study comprised two groups: the exposed group, with 38 male endemic disease control agents with simultaneous occupational noise and pesticide exposure; and the control group, with 18 age- and sex-matched workers without occupational noise and/or pesticide exposure. All participants underwent pure-tone audiometry, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, dichotic digits test, and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions suppression effect. There was a significant inter-group diffe

Deficit in Central Auditory Processing as a Biomarker of Pre-Clinical Alzheimer's Disease.

Prevention of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (d/AD) requires interventions that slow the disease process prior to symptom onset. To develop such interventions, one needs metrics that assess pre-symptomatic disease progression. Familiar measures of progression include cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemical and imaging analyses, as well as cognitive testing. Changes in the latter can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from effects of "normal" aging. A different approach involves testing of "central auditory processing" (CAP), which enables comprehension of auditory stimuli amidst a distra

Behavioral and Electrophysiological Assessment of Central Auditory Processing in Individuals With Sickle Cell Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell anemia has a genetic origin characterized by an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. The nervous system may be subject to vaso-occlusion and, consequently, affect the proper functioning of the central portion of hearing. OBJECTIVE: To assess central auditory skills and analyze short- and long-latency auditory evoked potentials in children with sickle cell disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. All children had normal hearing thresholds, and their central auditory processing underwent behavioral assessment with a battery of tests involving dichotic and monotic

Clinical psychoacoustics in Alzheimer's disease central auditory processing disorders and speech deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in speech understanding in the presence of background noise or competing auditory signals is typically present in central auditory processing disorders. These disorders may be diagnosed in Alzheimer's disease as a result of degeneration in the central auditory system. In addition perception and processing of speech may be affected. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A MEDLINE research was conducted in order to answer the question whether there is a central auditory processing disorder involved in Alzheimer's disease. A second question to be investigated was what, if any is the connec

Increased central auditory gain in 5xFAD Alzheimer's disease mice as an early biomarker candidate for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative illness without a cure. All current therapies require an accurate diagnosis and staging of AD to ensure appropriate care. Central auditory processing disorders (CAPDs) and hearing loss have been associated with AD, and may precede the onset of Alzheimer's dementia. Therefore, CAPD is a possible biomarker candidate for AD diagnosis. However, little is known about how CAPD and AD pathological changes are correlated. In the present study, we investigated auditory changes in AD using transgenic amyloidosis mouse models. AD mouse models were bred to a

Abnormal auditory evoked potentials in Déjérine-Sottas disease. Report of two cases with central acoustic and vestibular impairment.

Two cases of hereditary motor sensory neuropathy type III (Déjérine-Sottas disease) examined by audiological, vestibular and electrophysiological methods are reported. In both cases there were signs of vestibular and acoustic central pathway involvement, shown by vestibular examination and by the study of auditory evoked potentials. The presence of central involvement in this hereditary neuropathy suggests central as well as peripheral myelin alteration.

Serotonergic central tone in Parkinson's disease with fatigue: Evidence from the loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP).

Central fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common and disabling symptom that further worsens the patients' quality of life. A deficit in the serotonergic system may be implicated in the occurrence of fatigue in patients with PD as well as in those with other chronic conditions characterized by fatigue. The loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) is a neurophysiological tool that has proved to be effective in measuring the serotonergic central function in vivo. The aim of the present study was to assess central serotonergic activity in PD patients and to explore its poss

[Novel mutation in X-linked Charcot-Marie-tooth (CMTXI) disease associated with central conduction slowing on brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP)].

CMTX1, the second most common type of inherited hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), is associated with mutations of the gene for the gap junction protein connexin 32 (Cx32). In this condition, central conduction velocity is known to be delayed, presumably because mutated Cx32 is expressed in oligodendrocytes. A 45-year-old man presented with a 5-year history of progressive gait disturbance due to leg muscle weakness. The family history revealed that the mother had also progressive gait disturbance in her early 40s, and the younger sister could not walk faster than before at the age

Application of brain stem response in brain-injured children.

The early components of the auditory evoked potential within 10 msec following an auditory stimulus are attributed to the brain stem auditory nuclei and pathways. In pediatric neurology the auditory brain stem response (ABR) can be applied to: 1) differential diagnosis of hearing impairment in young children including objective threshold measurement of hearing, 2) electrophysiological evaluation of maturation of the auditory pathways, 3) diagnosis of the site and/or extent of neurlogical diseases affecting the brain stem and 4) observation of a degenerating process of degenerative diseases in

Distinction between auditory electrophysiological responses in type 1 and type 2 diabetic animal models.

Neurological research has focused recently on determining the molecular mechanisms of common causes of damage to the peripheral and central nervous systems. One of the metabolic systemic diseases that can result in sensorineural hearing loss is diabetic mellitus (DM). In this study, we aimed to compare the auditory electrophysiological responses present in animal models of type 1 and type 2 DM using auditory brainstem response (ABR), auditory middle latency response (AMLR), and transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) in animal model. We found that ABR threshold shifts and latency delays

Contribution of psychoacoustics and neuroaudiology in revealing correlation of mental disorders with central auditory processing disorders.

BACKGROUND: Psychoacoustics is a fascinating developing field concerned with the evaluation of the hearing sensation as an outcome of a sound or speech stimulus. Neuroaudiology with electrophysiologic testing, records the electrical activity of the auditory pathways, extending from the 8th cranial nerve up to the cortical auditory centers as a result of external auditory stimuli. Central Auditory Processing Disorders may co-exist with mental disorders and complicate diagnosis and outcome. DESIGN: A MEDLINE search was conducted to search for papers concerning the association between Central Aud

Auditory deficits in neurological disorders.

Neurological diseases present with diverse and often complex symptomatology. Focal neurological signs such as paresis, aphasia or visual field deficits together with often serious general state of a neurological patient usually push auditory symptoms into the background. Here, we present a review of literature on central and peripheral auditory disturbances that can appear in the course of most common neurological diseases. We present: cerebral stroke, cochleovestibular nerve compression syndrome, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis and brain tumors. We focus on the

The neglected neglect: auditory neglect.

Whereas visual and somatosensory forms of neglect are commonly recognized by clinicians, auditory neglect is often not assessed and therefore neglected. The auditory cortical processing system can be functionally classified into 2 distinct pathways. These 2 distinct functional pathways deal with recognition of sound ("what" pathway) and the directional attributes of the sound ("where" pathway). Lesions of higher auditory pathways produce distinct clinical features. Clinical bedside evaluation of auditory neglect is often difficult because of coexisting neurological deficits and the binaural na

Auditory dysfunction.

Hearing impairment, although uncommon, may occur in patients with a vertebrobasilar artery occlusion disease. The pathogenesis may be an ischemic lesion involving the auditory pathways in the pons and midbrain, the cochlear nucleus, cochlear nerve or the cochlea. The AICA and IAA are the main arteries that supply the peripheral audiovestibular structures of the inner ear and central audiovestibular pathways of the middle cerebellar peduncle and lateral pons.
