The cognitive neuropsychology of auditory hallucinations: a parallel auditory pathways framework.

Auditory hallucinations are generally defined as false perceptions. Recent developments in auditory neuroscience have rapidly increased our understanding of normal auditory perception revealing (partially) separate pathways for the identification ("what") and localization ("where") of auditory objects. The current review offers a reexamination of the nature of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia using this object-based framework. First, the structural and functional organization of auditory what and where pathways is briefly described. Then, using recent functional neuroimaging data from

Clinical relevance of medial efferent auditory pathways.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions have been shown to be suppressed by sounds applied in the contralateral ear and this effect can be largely explained by the involvement of medial olivocochlear efferent fibers. Thus, EOAE recording during contralateral stimulation provides a non-invasive means of investigating auditory efferent system functioning in humans. The question remains, however, as to whether this test provides a tool, which could be useful in a variety of clinical applications. This review describes current clinical applications for this test, showing that it may prove useful for improvin

[Brain-stem auditory pathways: effects of atropine].

The efferent pathways exert a control action on the function of the cochlear nucleus and hair cells. Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter of the centrifugal system and its action can be blocked by Atropine. In order to give a contribution to the knowledge of the function of the efferent bundle, Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) and Acoustic Reflex Latencies (ARLs) have been examined in 10 young normal subjects there was also a decrease in latency greater than or equal to 100 microseconds by at least other two waves. The only statistically significant difference was relative to the latency m

Human ROBO1 regulates interaural interaction in auditory pathways.

In rodents, the Robo1 gene regulates midline crossing of major nerve tracts, a fundamental property of the mammalian CNS. However, the neurodevelopmental function of the human ROBO1 gene remains unknown, apart from a suggested role in dyslexia. We therefore studied axonal crossing with a functional approach, based on magnetoencephalography, in 10 dyslexic individuals who all share the same rare, weakly expressing haplotype of the ROBO1 gene. Auditory-cortex responses were recorded separately to left- and right-ear sounds that were amplitude modulated at different frequencies. We found impaired

Effect of radiotherapy on retro-cochlear auditory pathways.

OBJECTIVES: The cochlea may be damaged by modern conventional radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancers when the ear is included in the radiation field. It is unclear however, if the retro-cochlear auditory pathways are affected as well, which has clinical significance in cochlear implantation. This study aims to investigate the integrity of the retro-cochlear auditory pathways in patients who had received RT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. METHODS: Patients who were newly diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and treated by RT alone were studied. Evoked re

Auditory agnosia due to long-term severe hydrocephalus caused by spina bifida - specific auditory pathway versus nonspecific auditory pathway.

A 27-year-old female showed auditory agnosia after long-term severe hydrocephalus due to congenital spina bifida. After years of hydrocephalus, she gradually suffered from hearing loss in her right ear at 19 years of age, followed by her left ear. During the time when she retained some ability to hear, she experienced severe difficulty in distinguishing verbal, environmental, and musical instrumental sounds. However, her auditory brainstem response and distortion product otoacoustic emissions were largely intact in the left ear. Her bilateral auditory cortices were preserved, as shown by neuro

Abrupt unilateral deafness modifies function of human auditory pathways.

We studied nine patients with unilateral abrupt deafness caused by acoustic neuroma surgery. Cortical responses to tones delivered to the intact ear were recorded postoperatively with a 122-channel whole-scalp neuromagnetometer. In three patients, followed for 12 months with 2-4 measurements, evoked responses originating in the auditory cortices were weak and delayed one month after the operation in both hemispheres. During the follow-up, the amplitudes reached the control level. No response abnormalities were found in patients who were studied 1.5-4.5 years after the operation. Our findings s

Auditory agnosia and auditory spatial deficits following left hemispheric lesions: evidence for distinct processing pathways.

Auditory recognition and auditory spatial functions were studied in four patients with circumscribed left hemispheric lesions. Patient FD was severely deficient in recognition of environmental sounds but normal in auditory localisation and auditory motion perception. The lesion included the left superior, middle and inferior temporal gyri and lateral auditory areas (as identified in previous anatomical studies), but spared Heschl's gyrus, the acoustic radiation and the thalamus. Patient SD had the same profile as FD, with deficient recognition of environmental sounds but normal auditory locali

Interactions between the hippocampus and the auditory pathway.

Increasing evidence has shown that noise overexposure could lead to impaired hippocampal function. Hippocampal alteration is also observed in several auditory deficits, including hearing loss, and tinnitus. Therefore, the functions of hearing and cognition interact with each other. Here, we summarize the evidence that noise affects the hippocampus from aspects of behavior, neurogenesis, ultrastructure, neurotransmission, other biomarkers, and electrophysiology. We also address hippocampal alterations in auditory disorders, including hearing loss and tinnitus. Based on the current state of the

[Functional examinations of the ear and auditory pathway].

Hearing is usually examined by means of pure tone and speech audiometry. Alternative examinations are required when the level of hearing defect needs to be more closely defined or hearing is being measured from a patient who is unable to give reliable feedback on a test sound. Neonatal hearing screening involves measuring of otoacoustic emissions generated in the cochlea of the inner ear or brain stem responses formed within the auditory pathway. Immittance measurements are used to evaluate the function of the middle ear. Most commonly used methods include tympanometry probing the mobility of

Auditory pathway abnormalities in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a degenerative, progressive, chronic disease that mainly affects the central nervous system, caused by dopamine deficiency. One of the ways to evaluate the central nervous system is with auditory evoked potentials (AEP). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the audiometric responses, and the auditory brainstem response (ABR), and cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEP) in individuals with PD. METHODS: Thirty-two patients aged between 40 and 81 of both sexes were assessed, 16 with PD (study group [SG]) and 16 without PD (control group [CG]) matched for sex and

Auditory central pathways in children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease. Auditory evoked potential studies have demonstrated conduction and neural processing deficits in adults with MS, but little is known about the electrophysiological responses in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the central auditory pathway with brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and long-latency auditory evoked potentials (LLAEP) in children and adolescents with MS. METHODS: The study comprised 17 individuals with MS, of both sexes, aged 9 to 18 years, and 17 healthy volunteers, matched for

Pathways that make voices: white matter changes in auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: The origin of auditory hallucinations, which are one of the core symptoms of schizophrenia, is still a matter of debate. It has been hypothesized that alterations in connectivity between frontal and parietotemporal speech-related areas might contribute to the pathogenesis of auditory hallucinations. These networks are assumed to become dysfunctional during the generation and monitoring of inner speech. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging is a relatively new in vivo method to investigate the directionality of cortical white matter tracts. OBJECTIVE: To investigate, using di

Electroacupuncture Promotes Neuroplasticity of Central Auditory Pathway: An Auditory Evoked Potentials Study.

Our previous studies found that electroacupuncture at the right Zhongzhu acupoint (TE3) can enhance auditory recovery in rats with noise-induced hearing loss. Here, we investigated the changes in auditory brainstem response (ABR) and long late latency (LLR) evoked potential to explain the mechanisms of electroacupuncture at TE3. The auditory evoked potentials were recorded, including ABR and LLR, at baseline and on day 3 (D3), D5, and D8 after baseline. The 2-Hz electroacupuncture at the right TE3 was applied on D3, D4, and D5 in the electroacupuncture group but not in the control group. In AB

Tinnitus in adolescents: the start of the vulnerability of the auditory pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Although tinnitus is an increasingly common symptom, few studies have assessed its prevalence or incidence among adolescents. PURPOSE: To assess whether the presence of tinnitus in adolescents is associated with minimal hearing damage, evaluated through high-frequency audiometry (HFA), otoacoustic emission (OAE), and loudness discomfort level (LDL). METHODS: The sample comprised 168 adolescents of a private school (61.3% boys; mean age 14.1 years old; standard deviation=2). All of them completed a questionnaire about tinnitus and hypersensitivity to sounds (sound intolerance),
