Auditory perception in auditory neuropathy: clinical similarity with auditory verbal agnosia.

The precise features of auditory perception in patients with auditory neuropathy have not been well described. In the present study, we examined auditory perception in a patient with auditory neuropathy. The patient was a right-handed 7-year-old boy. His chief complaint was delayed speech and suspected of verbal learning disability. He could talk, read and repeat rather fluently but could not understand fully what was asked. V-IQ, P-IQ and F-IQ of Wechsler Scale for Children III-R were 53, 118 and 81, respectively. Pure tone audiogram was completely normal. His speech discrimination ability wa

Auditory hallucinations: expectation-perception model.

In this paper, we aimed to present a hypothesis that would explain the mechanism of auditory hallucinations, one of the main symptoms of schizophrenia. We propose that auditory hallucinations arise from abnormalities in the predictive coding which underlies normal perception, specifically, from the absence or attenuation of prediction error. The suggested deficiencies in processing prediction error could arise from (1) abnormal modulation of thalamus by prefrontal cortex, (2) absence or impaired transmission of external input, (3) dysfunction of the auditory and association cortex, (4) neurotr

Frontal processing and auditory perception.

Disordered processing of the pattern in sound over time has been observed in a number of clinical disorders, including developmental dyslexia. This study addresses the brain mechanisms required for the perception of such a pattern. We report the systematic evaluation of temporal perception in a patient with a single intact right auditory cortex and a large right frontal lobe lesion. A striking dissociated deficit was demonstrated in the perception of temporal pattern at the level of tens or hundreds of milliseconds. This proves that, contrary to common belief, mechanisms in the pathway up to a

Auditory time perception in Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by early involvement of the striatum. It affects the pace of repetitive motor activity, as motor timing depends on basal ganglia activity. However, data are lacking on the impact of this process on auditory time perception in motor non-affected gene carriers. OBJECTIVE: This work aims to test the performance in time perception of a group of mutation carriers, either without motor symptoms or at an early stage of motor involvement. This should allow designing therapies targeting compensation strategies and possibly be used as a disease pro

[Pathophysiology of auditory and speech perception].

Auditory perception or hearing can be defined as the interpretation of sensory evidence, produced by the ears in response to sound, in terms of the events that caused the sound. We do not hear a window but we may hear a window closing. We do not hear a dog but we may hear a dog barking. And we do not hear a person but we may hear a person talking. Hearing impairment can result in anxiety or stress in everyday life. Pure-tone hearing loss (or threshold shift) is a measure of hearing impairment. Aging and excessive noise are the main causes of hearing impairment. Speech perception is another con

Auditory perception in vestibular neurectomy subjects.

The auditory efferent nerve is a feedback pathway that originates in the brainstem and projects to the inner ear. Although the anatomy and physiology of efferents have been rather thoroughly described, their functional roles in auditory perception are still not clear. Here, we report data in six human subjects who had undergone vestibular neurectomy, during which their efferent nerves were also presumably severed. The surgery had alleviated these subjects' vertigo but also resulted in mild to moderate hearing loss. We designed our experiments with a focus on the possible role of efferents in a

Auditory feature perception and auditory hallucinatory experiences in schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

Schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SZ) is associated with deficits in auditory perception as well as auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH). However, the relationship between auditory feature perception and auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH), one of the most commonly occurring symptoms in psychosis, has not been well characterized. This study evaluated perception of a broad range of auditory features in SZ and determined whether current AVHs relate to auditory feature perception. Auditory perception, including frequency, intensity, duration, pulse-train and temporal order discrimination, as well

The development of auditory perception in children after auditory brainstem implantation.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) can provide useful auditory perception and language development in deaf children who are not able to use a cochlear implant (CI). We prospectively followed up a consecutive group of 64 deaf children up to 12 years following ABI surgery. The etiology of deafness in these children was: cochlear nerve aplasia in 49, auditory neuropathy in 1, cochlear malformations in 8, bilateral cochlear postmeningitic ossification in 3, neurofibromatosis type 2 in 2, and bilateral cochlear fractures due to a head injury in 1. Thirty-five children had other congenital nonaudito

Anxiety sensitivity and auditory perception of heartbeat.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of sensations associated with autonomic arousal. AS has been associated with the development and maintenance of panic disorder. Given that panic patients often rate cardiac symptoms as the most fear-provoking feature of a panic attack, AS individuals may be especially responsive to cardiac stimuli. Consequently, we developed a signal-in-white-noise detection paradigm to examine the strategies that high and low AS individuals use to detect and discriminate normal and abnormal heartbeat sounds. Compared to low AS individuals, high AS individuals demonstrated

Speech perception in individuals with auditory neuropathy.

PURPOSE: Speech perception in participants with auditory neuropathy (AN) was systematically studied to answer the following 2 questions: Does noise present a particular problem for people with AN? Can clear speech and cochlear implants alleviate this problem? METHOD: The researchers evaluated the advantage in intelligibility of clear speech over conversational speech in 13 participants with AN. Of these participants, 7 had received a cochlear implant. Eight sentence-recognition experiments were conducted to examine the clear speech advantage in 2 listening conditions (quiet and noise) using 4

First auditory brainstem implantation in Poland: auditory perception results over 12 months.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) are a modern method of treatment of total bilateral deafness in cases of extracochlear origin. In most cases therapy is applied in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). This paper presents the results of surgical treatment and rehabilitation in a 28-year-old woman with bilateral, multiple tumours of the central nervous system causing total deafness. Simultaneous removal of the tumours and implantation of ABI allowed treatment of the potentially lethal pathology and hearing restoration. Improving auditory skills and excellent tests results were noted i

[Auditory-perceptive, acoustic and vocal self-perception analyses in children].

PURPOSE: To establish the occurrence of dysphonic children and to relate data from auditory-perceptive, acoustic and vocal self-perception analyses of dysphonic and non-dysphonic children. METHODS: Participants were 70 children, 37 female and 33 male, with ages ranging from 6 to 10 years. The sustained emission of the vowel /a/ was recorded, and children replied to the question "What do you think of your voice?".After that, the auditory-perceptive analysis of their voices was carried out, based on the parameters of the GRBASI scale. The acoustic analysis was also conducted, considering the fo

Auditory false perception in schizophrenia: Development and validation of auditory signal detection task.

Auditory hallucinations constitute an important symptom component in 70-80% of schizophrenia patients. These hallucinations are proposed to occur due to an imbalance between perceptual expectation and external input, resulting in attachment of meaning to abstract noises; signal detection theory has been proposed to explain these phenomena. In this study, we describe the development of an auditory signal detection task using a carefully chosen set of English words that could be tested successfully in schizophrenia patients coming from varying linguistic, cultural and social backgrounds. Music Enjoyment in Hearing Loss: Beyond Auditory Perception.

Background/Objectives: Music is an important component of quality of life and is increasingly recognized as a meaningful patient-centered outcome in hearing healthcare. Although individuals with hearing loss frequently report reduced enjoyment of music, research in this area has focused on auditory perception, including pitch, timbre, melody, and sound quality. Consequently, music enjoyment is often conceptualized and measured primarily through perceptual performance, despite growing evidence that enjoyment represents a broader subjective experience. Methods: This narrative review examines the
