[Significance of auditory perceptual disorders for pediatric and adolescent psychiatric disorders].

The clinical relevance of central auditory processing disorders (CAPD) is highly controversial. The paper explicates different concepts of CAPD and reviews empirical studies of the relationship between auditory deficits and learning or psychiatric disorders. The overview of the available literature reveals that numerous authors have described subnormal auditory abilities in groups of children with developmental language disorders, dyslexia or ADHD. However, little or no relationship between the severity of clinical impairment and auditory deficits has been found. Thus auditory deficits do not

Salicylate-induced auditory perceptual disorders and plastic changes in nonclassical auditory centers in rats.

Previous studies have shown that sodium salicylate (SS) activates not only central auditory structures, but also nonauditory regions associated with emotion and memory. To identify electrophysiological changes in the nonauditory regions, we recorded sound-evoked local field potentials and multiunit discharges from the striatum, amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate cortex after SS-treatment. The SS-treatment produced behavioral evidence of tinnitus and hyperacusis. Physiologically, the treatment significantly enhanced sound-evoked neural activity in the striatum, amygdala, and hippocampus, but

Perinatal asphyxia affects rat auditory processing: implications for auditory perceptual impairments in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Perinatal asphyxia, a naturally and commonly occurring risk factor in birthing, represents one of the major causes of neonatal encephalopathy with long term consequences for infants. Here, degraded spectral and temporal responses to sounds were recorded from neurons in the primary auditory cortex (A1) of adult rats exposed to asphyxia at birth. Response onset latencies and durations were increased. Response amplitudes were reduced. Tuning curves were broader. Degraded successive-stimulus masking inhibitory mechanisms were associated with a reduced capability of neurons to follow higher-rate re

Perceptual evaluation of severe pediatric voice disorders: rater reliability using the consensus auditory perceptual evaluation of voice.

The purpose of this nonrandomized prospective study was to quantify the inter- and intrarater reliability of experienced speech-language pathologist's perceptual ratings of voice in pediatric patients post-laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR). Moderate to severe dysphonia is common in this population. Using the sentence portion of the Consensus Auditory Perceptual Evaluation-Voice (CAPE-V) rating scale, three experienced speech-language pathologists independently rated randomized voice samples of 50 participants ages 4-20 years, who had acquired or congenital airway conditions requiring at lea

[Recovery process of auditory perceptual disorders in a child with word deafness].

The patient was a right-handed boy. Pregnancy and delivery were normal. There were no neonatal complications. His development was normal until the age of 6 years and 10 months when he suddenly fell into coma. He was admitted to a hospital, where he was diagnosed as having encephalopathy of unknown cause. It was found that he did not respond to verbal stimuli after recovery from coma. He was referred to our hospital for detailed examination of hearing at the age of 7 years, and received neuroradiological and audiological examinations including X-ray CT, positron-CT, behavioral audiometry, audit

Is auditory perceptual timing a core deficit of developmental coordination disorder?

Time is an essential dimension for perceiving and processing auditory events, and for planning and producing motor behaviors. Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 5-6% of children that is characterized by deficits in motor skills. Studies show that children with DCD have motor timing and sensorimotor timing deficits. We suggest that auditory perceptual timing deficits may also be core characteristics of DCD. This idea is consistent with evidence from several domains, (1) motor-related brain regions are often involved in auditory timing process; (

Can Resident Auditory-Perceptual Voice Assessments Predict Medical Urgency of Voice Disorders?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Growing reliance on telemedicine has created new triaging challenges. This study investigated how effectively otolaryngology resident auditory-perceptual voice assessments performed via telemedicine determined the need for urgent in-person clinic visits. METHODS: Twelve otolaryngology resident physicians (PGY1-PGY5) performed auditory-perceptual assessments on 25 voice samples recorded during initial voice evaluations. Voice samples were balanced in severity and taken in equal numbers from patients with the following diagnoses: benign laryngeal lesions, laryngeal cancer

Speech-language therapy students' auditory-perceptual judgements of simulated concurrent hypernasality and articulation disorders.

Auditory-perceptual judgements are regarded as the standard method for assessing speech disorders. However, the results of auditory-perceptual evaluations and rater reliability can be affected by various factors, such as concurrent problems in multiple speech subsystems. This study investigated the effect of a co-occurring articulation disorder on auditory-perceptual judgements of hypernasality and the effect of co-occurring hypernasality on judgements of an articulation disorder. The speech stimuli were sentences produced by a male speaker who simulated four levels of hypernasality (typical n

The predictive validity and accuracy of a screening test for language delay and auditory perceptual disorder.

Infants (321) who had been screened for language delay and auditory perceptual problems at 9 months of age were evaluated 1 year later. Of these infants 88.6% were correctly classified as at-risk or not-at-risk of delayed linguistic development. The correlation between performance on the screen and on a language scale was 0.49. The great majority of those with receptive and expressive delay continued to show problems at 2 years of age, whereas half of those with expressive delay alone were within normal limits. No evidence was found that a history of fluctuating hearing loss contributed to the

Auditory Stream Segregation in Autism Spectrum Disorder: Benefits and Downsides of Superior Perceptual Processes.

Auditory stream segregation allows us to organize our sound environment, by focusing on specific information and ignoring what is unimportant. One previous study reported difficulty in stream segregation ability in children with Asperger syndrome. In order to investigate this question further, we used an interleaved melody recognition task with children in the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this task, a probe melody is followed by a mixed sequence, made up of a target melody interleaved with a distractor melody. These two melodies have either the same [0 semitone (ST)] or a different mean

From Screening to Precision: Searching for Voice Disorder-Specific Acoustic and Auditory-Perceptual Metrics.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic and auditory-perceptual parameters are common tools for screening clinically significant voice disorders. However, the potential for disorder-specific acoustic signatures that support clinical differential diagnosis remains largely unrealized. Additionally, the robustness of acoustic patterns across different speech materials requires clarification to inform flexible, evidence-based clinical protocols and emerging machine learning applications. METHODS: This study investigated disorder-specific metrics and speech material consistency using the Perceptual Voice Qualities D
