Fungemia due to Aureobasidium pullulans.

Aureobasidium pullulans is a yeast-like dematiaceous fungus ubiquitous in nature. It is a rare cause of skin and soft tissue infection, peritonitis, and catheter-related fungemia in certain human hosts. We report a case of recurrent A. pullulans catheter-related fungemia that was successfully treated with caspofungin, posaconazole, and catheter removal.

Septins and cytokinesis in the polymorphic fungus Aureobasidium pullulans.

During cytokinesis of animal and fungal cells, a contractile actomyosin ring (CAR) assembles at target locations and constricts to drive cell separation. In animal cells, the position of the CAR is determined by the mitotic spindle so that the cleavage plane is perpendicular to the mitotic axis. However, in budding yeasts, the location of CAR assembly is specified by a cortical septin cytoskeleton that recruits CAR components to the neck. In the polymorphic fungus Aureobasidium pullulans, we show that septins assemble at mother-bud necks and predict the sites of CAR assembly. Cells lacking sep

Aureobasidium pullulans scleritis following keratoplasty: a case report.

Fungal scleritis is a rare entity. A 50-year-old patient with culture proven Aureobasidium pullulans corneal ulcer underwent therapeutic keratoplasty. He developed scleritis 5 days following surgery. Although the patient had symptomatic improvement after antifungal therapy, surgical debridement, and cryotherapy, visual improvement was only marginal. Aureobasidium pullulans should be looked for as a cause for keratomycosis and scleromycosis, especially in tropical countries.

Fungal Keratitis Caused by Aureobasidium pullulans: A Case Report.

Aureobasidium pullulans is a dematiaceous fungus and a rare causative agent of fungal keratitis. We report a case of Aureobasidium pullulans keratitis that did not respond to conventional therapy despite two months of treatment for a corneal ulcer. A 52-year-old male patient presented with complaints of pain and redness of the right eye (OD) for two months. There was no history of any ocular trauma or surgery, or any other significant ocular and systemic illness. In the left eye (OS), a laser peripheral iridotomy was done 15 days ago. The patient was under treatment for a OD fungal corneal ulc

First case of neonatal fungemia caused by Aureobasidium melanogenum.

Aureobasidium melanogenum is a saprophytic, dematiaceous, yeast-like fungus rarely implicated in human infections. Here, we report the first case of A. melanogenum fungemia in a 30-week-old preterm, very low birth weight neonate born to a primigravida with history of gestational diabetes, pregnancy induced hypertension and oligohydramnios. The baby developed respiratory distress, hypotension, bradycardia, coagulopathy and septic shock shortly after birth, and eventually succumbed to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome on day 9 of life. Paired blood culture showed growth of a dematiaceous yeast

[Phosphate solubilization of Aureobasidium pullulan F4 and its mechanism].

The Aureobasidium pullulans F4 was isolated from the rhizosphere of Hippochaete ramosissimum in Tongguanshan mine wasteland in Tongling City, Anhui Province. Liquid culture was conducted with four kinds of phosphorus sources, calcium phosphate, aluminum phosphate, ferric phosphate and rock phosphate to determine the pH, dissolved phosphorus, phosphorus in the bacteria and organic acid in the solution. The results showed that the phosphate solubilization by A. pullulans F4 varied with phosphorus sources, which decreased in order of aluminum phosphate > ferric phosphate, calcium phosphate > rock

Molecular diagnosis and source tracing of an infection of Aureobasidium pullulans.

Aureobasidium pullulans (A. pullulans) is a dematiaceous, yeast-like fungus that is ubiquitous in nature, which can colonize the human hair and skin. A. pullulans has been clinically implicated to cause skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, splenic abscesses, and peritonitis. Herein, molecular diagnostic of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing was used to investigate a suspected case of A. pullulans infection, and the infection source had been traced. A 27-year-old female case was suspected of kala-azar due to the recurrent fever. Bone marrow specimens were analyzed. The samples

Aureobasidium pneumonia in a post liver transplant recipient: a case report.

This is the first report of Aureobasidium (A.) pullulans as an opportunistic pulmonary infection in a liver transplant recipient. A 46-year-old caucasian man had an orthotopic liver transplant in 1988. His liver disease was primary sclerosing cholangitis. He required 2 subsequent liver re-transplants for primary graft non-function and acute rejection. The patient had been living in the California desert for two months prior to admission and presented with ventilator-dependent acute respiratory failure and hemodialysis-dependent acute renal failure. Imaging studies revealed severe bilateral inf

A renal mycosis of roach (Rutilus rutilus) caused by the Aureobasidium pullulans.

Spontaneous mycosis caused by Aureobasidium pullulans is documented in roach in a cyprinid-prevalent water reservoir in Czechia. Gross pathological lesions included pale gills and splenomegaly, as revealed during necropsy examination. Histological examination showed extensive foci with fungal elements in the kidney. The isolated fungus was identified through phenotypic and molecular characterization, including phylogeny. This report represents the first case of A. pullulans infection in fish and cold-blooded vertebrates, to the best of our knowledge.

Iron-Derepressed Robust Production of Fusarinine C Siderophore by Aureobasidium melanogenum.

Siderophore biosynthesis is severely inhibited by iron sufficiency, limiting microbial production of siderophores on a large industrial scale. Herein, we report novel iron-derepressed and robust production of the fungal siderophore fusarinine C (FsC) in Aureobasidium melanogenum, achieved by metabolic reprogramming coupling Raman-based single-cell sorting (RACS). First, we deciphered the mechanisms of iron repression on siderophore biosynthesis in this fungus. Guided by this, we constructed an iron-depressed chassis. In this chassis, we reprogrammed the metabolic pathways of FsC involving the

First case of Aureobasidium pullulans in a dog after sterilization surgery in Chile.

In November 2024, a female Chilean Chihuahua presented with a limb lesion that did not heal after spaying. The diagnosis indicated Aureobasidium pullulans infection. The antifungigram showed susceptibility to itraconazole, treatment with this drug together with bilateral amputation resulted in a complete recovery. The phylogenetic tree of the ITS gene showed differences with other sequences of the same species from animals and lichens. This case highlights this environmental fungus as a potential pathogen in dogs.

Hypothyroidism-related onycholysis with Aureobasidium pullulans colonization successfully treated with antifungal therapy.

This is a report, the first to my knowledge, of secondary nail-apparatus involvement by Aureobasidium pullulans in a patient with onycholysis related to hypothyroidism. Complete cure of the lesions was seen after 2 weeks of itraconazole and 2 months of local bifonazole therapy. This case raises concern about the extent of involvement of this yeast in onycholysis of diverse clinical aetiologies.
