Food Habits of Older Australians Living Alone in the Australian Capital Territory.

The link between adequate nutrition and quality of life for older persons is well established. With the proportion of older adults increasing, policy regarding support and care for the ageing has shifted emphasis to keeping older adults in their homes for as long as possible. Risk of malnutrition is an issue of importance for this population and, while this risk is well researched within the hospital setting, it is still relatively under-researched within the community-dwelling elderly, particularly with respect to the lived experience. This qualitative study (underpinned by interpretative phe

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae infection in the Australian Capital Territory region.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pattern of invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) region with a view to assessing the possible benefits of vaccination in this community. SETTING AND DESIGN: The microbiology department of Royal Canberra Hospital processes all specimens from the three public hospitals in the ACT. Together these hospitals provide all paediatric medical and approximately 80% of adult inpatient beds available in the ACT. We identified all laboratory isolates of H. influenzae obtained from normally sterile sites from 1984 to 1990, and review

Bicycle crashes in different riding environments in the Australian capital territory.

INTRODUCTION: Cyclists are increasingly overrepresented in traffic crash casualties in Australia. There is evidence that better cycling infrastructure increases participation, but whether it reduces the numbers of injured cyclists is less clear. This study examined injury outcomes of crashes in different cycling environments. METHODS: Adult cyclists injured on- and off-road were recruited from emergency departments from November 2009 to May 2010 in the Australian Capital Territory. Eligible participants (n = 313/372, 84.1%) were interviewed and their injury self-reports were corroborated with

After-hours presentations to community-based primary care in the Australian Capital Territory.

This study describes patient characteristics and presentations to community-based primary care medical services in the after-hours period. A cross-sectional survey completed by practitioners was voluntarily conducted over one weeknight and weekend in 2019 at 31 of 51 extended hours general practices (GP), three of three medical deputising services and three of three nurse-led walk-in clinics (WICs). Of 3371 community-based after-hours presentations, 934 consultation records were obtained (overall response: 28%). Emergency departments reported 524 triage code 4 and 5 patients within the study p

Screening for breast cancer with MRI: recent experience from the Australian Capital Territory.

The American Cancer Society now recommends annual MRI screening for women at 20-25% or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer. The role of MRI screening in other risk subgroups is unproved because of insufficient data. Our study comprised 209 breast MRI scans carried out in 171 asymptomatic patients (age range 22-67 years, mean 46 years), referred between January 2005 and June 2008. Targeted ultrasound was carried out in 32 episodes (15%) and biopsies were taken in 23 patients (13%). In four patients, MR-guided procedures were required to establish a diagnosis, two using hook-wire localization

Incidence of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory.

A survey was conducted during 1977 to 1978 to determine the incidence of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Ninety-nine cases born between 1960 and 1971 were ascertained representing an incidence rate of 18.6 per 100 000 liveborn males. Over 60% of the ascertained males were isolated cases, and only 7% of affected males had an affected males relative in a previous generation in the female line. Categorisation of ascertained cases as either "theoretically preventable" or not shows that genetic counselling alone in the present circumstances is in

Suicide in people over 65 years of age in the Australian Capital Territory.

Suicide by hanging is not an uncommon event in people over the age of 65 years in the Australian Capital Territory. We will review the incidence of suicide over the last seven years, as well as discuss the characteristics of suicide in elderly people. Knowledge of local suicide patterns enables the forensic medical officer to recognise deaths that may be unexpected or unusual.

Self-harm and suicidal behaviour among incarcerated adults in the Australian Capital Territory.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the leading cause of death in prisons worldwide. Improved understanding of the factors associated with suicide is necessary to inform targeted suicide prevention and interventions. Here we aim to (a) document the prevalence of suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and mental disorder; and (b) identify demographic, mental health, and criminal justice correlates of suicidal ideation, in a sample of incarcerated adults in Australia. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2016 Detainee Health and Wellbeing Survey conducted in the Alexander Maconochie Centre, the Aus

Proximal shift of colorectal cancer in the Australian Capital Territory over 20 years.

BACKGROUND: Several studies in other countries have demonstrated a change in subsite distribution of colorectal cancer, with increasing proximal cancers. Confirmation of such a change in Australia would have implications for screening and diagnosis of colorectal cancer. AIMS: To determine whether there has been an increase in the proportion of proximal colorectal cancers in Australia, and whether there have been changes in other clinical and pathological aspects of colorectal cancer. METHODS: A study of the hospital files of patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed and treated at all hospit

Investigation of a norovirus outbreak at a catered social event, Australian Capital Territory, 2024.

BACKGROUND: An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness was notified, affecting attendees at a private function in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in 2024. Investigations were conducted to determine the infectious agent, source of illness and mode of transmission, as well as to determine any public health actions required to prevent further illness. METHODS: Function attendees were surveyed using a modified standard gastroenteritis questionnaire. A confirmed outbreak case was defined as an individual who was unwell after attending the event and had a norovirus-positive clinical sample; a p

Prioritising people who use drugs in health policy: An Australian Capital Territory case study.

INTRODUCTION: Governments are increasingly identifying priority populations on which to focus health policy and to measure health and wellbeing outcomes. Prioritising populations that are considered to be higher risk or to have particular needs that may not be captured within the parameters of health policy developed for the general population, is essential to health equity and efficient resource allocation. However, the criteria that governments use for prioritising populations is often vague or unspecified. To date, people who use drugs are almost never identified as a priority population in

Childhood prevalence of achondroplasia in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia.

The aim of this study was to estimate the childhood prevalence of achondroplasia, trends over time in birth prevalence, and age at diagnosis in Australia. Children born between 1990 and 2019 with a clinical and radiological and/or molecular diagnosis of achondroplasia were identified from a tertiary hospital servicing New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and compared with population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Childhood prevalence of achondroplasia, based on children ≤19 years of age and resident in NSW/ACT on June 30, 2019 (n = 109), was 5.2 per

Seasonality in testing and positive respiratory bacterial infections in the Australian Capital Territory, 1997-2007.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (Myco) bacteria are atypical pathogens that can cause pneumonia and exacerbate underlying conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In the Australian Capital Territory, there is limited information on how seasonal patterns for positive infections and testing may vary, a gap that has implications for control strategies. METHODS: We examined seasonal patterns of immunoassay results of patients from Canberra Hospital, Australia, who were tested for Cp and/or Myco. Pathology data, collected from August 1997

Toxocariasis: a serological survey of blood donors in the Australian Capital Territory together with observations on the risks of infection.

The sera from 660 healthy blood donors from Canberra were tested for antibodies to Toxocara canis by the ELISA test. The results were compared with those from patients with suspected or confirmed visceral larva migrans or ocular toxocariasis. Over 7% of Canberra sera showed elevated levels of antibody reacting with T. canis antigen. Sera from patients resident in Australia with other helminth parasites did not cross-react with T. canis antigen in our tests. However, studies of sera collected in several tropical countries with other parasitic infection, show that cross-reactions with other para

An analysis of the cultivation, consumption and composition of home-grown cannabis following decriminalisation in the Australian Capital Territory.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT), a region that includes Australia's capital, Canberra, decriminalised small-scale cannabis cultivation and possession in January 2020. Here, we examined cannabis use and cultivation behaviours, experiences and attitudes of current and past small-scale ACT cannabis cultivators. ACT residents (n = 311) who currently cultivate or have previously cultivated cannabis completed a cross-sectional online survey ('CAN-ACT') and provided home-grown cannabis for phytocannabinoid analysis (optional). Reasons for cultivation included a preference for home-grown cannab
