Automated facial recognition and candidate list rank change of computer generated facial approximations generated with multiple eye orb positions.

Expanding on research previously reported by the authors, this study further examines the recognizability of ReFace facial approximations generated with the following eye orb positions: (i) centrally within the bony eye socket, (ii) 1.0mm superior and 2.0mm lateral relative to center, and (iii) 1.0mm superior and 2.5mm lateral relative to center. Overall, 81% of the test subjects' approximation ranks improved with the use of either of the two supero-lateral eye orbs. Highly significant performance differences (p<0.01) were observed between the approximations with centrally positioned eye orbs

Automated recognition of spontaneous facial expression in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: parsing response variability.

BACKGROUND: Reduction or differences in facial expression are a core diagnostic feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence regarding the extent of this discrepancy is limited and inconsistent. Use of automated facial expression detection technology enables accurate and efficient tracking of facial expressions that has potential to identify individual response differences. METHODS: Children and adults with ASD (N = 124) and typically developing (TD, N = 41) were shown short clips of "funny videos." Using automated facial analysis software, we investigated differences between ASD a

Reduced task adaptation and contextual awareness in autistic adults during facial emotion recognition: evidence from mixed-effects modeling and automated facial analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in understanding facial emotion recognition (FER) in autistic adults in recent decades, the mechanisms underlying FER difficulties in individuals with autism remain unclear, with inconsistent findings across studies. A key limitation may be the reliance on aggregate accuracy scores, which overlook item- and subject-level variability. Here, we investigated the effects of task adaptation and stimulus properties on FER performance in autistic and non-autistic adults using mixed-effects modelling. METHODS: A total of 120 autistic and 116 non-autistic partic

Automated Facial Recognition for Noonan Syndrome Using Novel Deep Convolutional Neural Network With Additive Angular Margin Loss.

BACKGROUND: Noonan syndrome (NS), a genetically heterogeneous disorder, presents with hypertelorism, ptosis, dysplastic pulmonary valve stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and small stature. Early detection and assessment of NS are crucial to formulating an individualized treatment protocol. However, the diagnostic rate of pediatricians and pediatric cardiologists is limited. To overcome this challenge, we propose an automated facial recognition model to identify NS using a novel deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with a loss function called additive angular margin loss (ArcFace). Enhanced AlexNet with Gabor and Local Binary Pattern Features for Improved Facial Emotion Recognition.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) is vital for improving human-machine interactions, serving as the foundation for AI systems that integrate cognitive and emotional intelligence. This helps bridge the gap between mechanical processes and human emotions, enhancing machine engagement with humans. Considering the constraints of low hardware specifications often encountered in real-world applications, this study leverages recent advances in deep learning to propose an enhanced model for FER. The model effectively utilizes texture information from faces through Gabor and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) f

Parameter-Efficient Audio-Visual Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition with Mamba Fusion Adapters and Frame-Level Feature Arrangement.

Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition (DFER) has recently attracted significant interest due to its vital role in enabling empathetic and human-compatible technologies. Developing models that remain robust under in-the-wild variability is a key motivation for DFER research and its practical applications. Improving models through multimodal learning, which leverages audio and video data for richer, complementary representations, is one promising direction. However, existing methods still rely heavily on modality-specific encoders and coarse-grained content-level alignment, which hinders their a

MGCP-FER: Meta Control Genetic Programming (MCGP-FER) based feature extraction and fusion for facial expression recognition.

The high significance of the human-machine interaction system, facial expression recognition (FER) has become one of the most popular research fields in pattern recognition. The recognition of facial expressions is a challenging problem, because it is dependent on the quality of the facial depiction. Many different aspects have been added to detect facial expressions. But there is no universal set of features that can be useful to capture all the emotions. Therefore, there have been some researchers who are interested in combining several features to get more recognition. But this method is pr

A Cross-Modal Network for Facial Expression Recognition.

Deep neural networks enriched with structural information have been widely employed for facial expression recognition tasks. However, these methods often depend on hierarchical information rather than face property to finish expression recognition. In this paper, we propose a cross-modal network with strong biological and structural information for facial expression recognition (CMNet). CMNet can respectively learn expression information via face symmetry on a whole face, left and right half faces to extract complementary facial features. To prevent negative effect of biological and structural

Compact Occlusion-Robust Facial Expression Recognition via Clean-Anchored Hard Occlusion Fine-Tuning.

Facial occlusion removes expression-relevant evidence and remains a major source of error in camera-based affective sensing. Existing approaches to occlusion-robust facial expression recognition often rely on specialized attention, reconstruction, semantic, or geometric pipelines, whereas aggressive training using synthetic occlusions may impair discrimination on clean images or overfit to synthetic corruption patterns. We address this tension between cleanness and robustness through clean-anchored hard occlusion fine-tuning (CA-HOFT). HardMix samples structured and random occlusion modes acco

ResNet18 facial feature extraction algorithm improved based on hybrid domain attention mechanism.

In the research of face recognition technology, the traditional methods usually show poor recognition accuracy and insufficient generalization ability when faced with complex scenes such as lighting changes, posture changes and skin color diversity. To solve these problems, based on the improvement of adaptive boosting to improve the accuracy of face detection, the study proposes a residual network 18-layer face feature extraction algorithm based on hybrid domain attention mechanism algorithm. The study introduces channel-domain and spatial-domain attention mechanism to enhance the extraction

SiaCon-DetNet with HySHO: a cutting-edge transformer-based deep learning framework for emotion-aware facial recognition.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) plays a critical role in most applications in human-computer interaction, psychological analysis, and affective computing to make intelligent systems capable of effectively perceiving the emotions of humans. Current approaches lack sufficient strength against problems like poor feature representation, robustness of facial expression variation, and model generalization. In order to counter such shortcomings, this paper presents a new FER model that integrates the SiaCon-DetNet and HySHO algorithm. The most striking novelty of SiaCon-DetNet is its capacity to com

OQ-FERNet: An occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network for real-time human-computer interaction.

Facial expression recognition is an important task in real-time human-computer interaction, but its practical application is still limited by partial facial occlusion, high computational cost, and the lack of fine-grained emotion representation. To address these issues, this paper proposes OQ-FERNet, an occlusion-aware quantitative facial expression recognition network. The proposed network adopts MobileNetV4-Conv-S as a lightweight facial expression feature extraction backbone to obtain compact and discriminative representations with low computational cost. On this basis, an Occlusion-aware R

A computerized facial approximation method for Homo sapiens based on facial soft tissue thickness depths and geometric morphometrics.

Facial approximation (FA) provides a promising means of generating the possible facial appearance of a deceased person. It facilitates exploration of the evolutionary forces driving anatomical changes in ancestral humans and can capture public attention. Despite the recent progress made toward improving the performance of FA methods, a limited understanding of detailed quantitative craniofacial relationships between facial bone and soft tissue morphology may hinder their accuracy, and hence subjective experience and artistic interpretation are required. In this study, we explored craniofacial

blenderFaceUV: Toward Marker-Based Precision and Flexibility in Facial Tracking With "Invisible" Markers.

blenderFace is a highly precise marker-based approach for measuring facial activity. Unlike most camera-based automated facial expression recognition (AFER) systems, which rely on fixed natural landmarks, blenderFace flexibly tracks virtually any point of interest using painted markers. However, visible markers, like EMG electrodes, may alter appearance, increase self-awareness, and affect spontaneous responding in face-to-face interactions. To address these limitations, we introduce blenderFaceUV, which uses sunscreen-based markers that are visible only under ultraviolet (UV) light (365 nm).

Controlled Evaluation of Hybrid Multi-Face Recognition Pipelines for Real-Time Occluded Face Recognition on Edge Devices.

Accurate recognition of partially occluded faces remains challenging in unconstrained and real-time environments, especially under masks, partial occlusions, pose variation, and illumination changes. This study presents a controlled comparison of three hybrid multi-face recognition pipelines for robust occluded face recognition. For fair evaluation, all pipelines use the same SCRFD face detector, preprocessing protocol, Linear SVM classifier, and 60% unknown rejection threshold, while varying only the feature extractor: ResNet29, ConvNeXt, and ResNet100 with ArcFace embeddings. To reduce data

Applicability of forensic facial approximation in the recognition process of unclaimed victims.

BACKGROUND: Identifying bodies in a state of putrefaction, skeletonization or mutilation is often difficult. In these cases, it is possible to use auxiliary methods such as forensic facial approximation, considering the possibility of recognition by a relative or acquaintance, helping to obtain ante-mortem data for the identification process. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the capacity of recognition of individuals from digital facial approximation and to verify the association between the level of understanding of the issue by evaluators and the recognition success index.
