Autonomous vehicles opportunities for cities air quality.

The impacts of autonomous vehicles (AV) on safety, energy and atmospheric emissions have been recognised to be important issues, but an air quality impact assessment is missing. In this study, by using a numerical modelling approach, the impact of AV on the air quality of a medium-sized Portuguese urban area was evaluated. For that, the air pollutants nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were considered and three scenarios were developed: i) a baseline scenario; ii) an autonomous scenario, assuming an AV market penetration rate of 30%; and iii) an electric autonomous scenario, taking

Infrastructure Preparedness for Autonomous Vehicles in Rural Areas.

While advancements in autonomous vehicle (AV) technology heavily favor urban environments, rural and tribal regions remain severely underprepared for automated deployment due to physical infrastructure deficiencies and communication limitations. To address this disparity, this paper formulates a scalable, low-cost multimodal framework designed to systematically evaluate rural infrastructure readiness across three critical operational domains: communication connectivity, lane marking detectability, and road surface kinematics. First, cellular network reliability is mapped via mobile telemetry t

Componentizing autonomous underwater vehicles by physical-running algorithms.

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) constitute a specific type of cyber-physical system that utilize electronic, mechanical, and software components. A component-based approach can address the development complexities of these systems through composable and reusable components and their integration, simplifying the development process and contributing to a more systematic, disciplined, and measurable engineering approach. In this article, we propose an architecture to design and describe the optimal performance of components for an AUV engineering process. The architecture involves a computin

Runtime unknown unsafe scenarios identification for SOTIF of autonomous vehicles.

Safety is a critical concern for autonomous vehicles (AVs). Current testing approaches face challenges in simultaneously meeting the requirements of being valid, safe, and fast. To address these challenges, the silent testing approach that tests functions or systems in the background without interfering with driving is motivated. Building upon our previous research, this study first extends the method to specifically address the validation of AV perception, utilizing a lane marking detection algorithm (LMDA) as a case study. Second, field experiments were conducted to investigate the method's

Interactions between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks considering occlusions by opposing vehicles.

Visibility can be identified as one of the critical determinants for the safety performance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on unsignalized mid-block crosswalks (UMC), which may be significantly influenced by build-up environment and surrounding vehicles. This study investigates the safety performance when AVs interact with pedestrians approaching from far-side sidewalks to UMCs considering the visual occlusion of opposing vehicles. A mathematical model is proposed for judging the visibilities of objects from observers' location under the impact of visual obstacles and is embedded into an agent-b

Influence of seating orientation on motion sickness in autonomous vehicles.

A major advantage of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is the passengers' ability to perform non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) while being driven. Among these NDRTs, social interaction with other passengers is considered to be particularly valuable. Seating layouts featuring rotatable front seats will enable a new level of social interaction during autonomous car journeys. However, being seated against the direction of travel is not very popular. Fear of motion sickness is one of the main reasons for this reluctance, which is commonly explained by the inability to see the road ahead. This raises the q

Efficacy of augmented visual environments for reducing sickness in autonomous vehicles.

The risk of motion sickness is considerably higher in autonomous vehicles than it is in human-operated vehicles. Their introduction will therefore require systems that mitigate motion sickness. We investigated whether this can be achieved by augmenting the vehicle interior with additional visualizations. Participants were immersed in motion simulations on a moving-base driving simulator, where they were backward-facing passengers of an autonomous vehicle. Using a Head-Mounted Display, they were presented either with a regular view from inside the vehicle, or with augmented views that offered a

Semi-Autonomous Vehicles as a Cognitive Assistive Device for Older Adults.

Losing the capacity to drive due to age-related cognitive decline can have a detrimental impact on the daily life functioning of older adults living alone and in remote areas. Semi-autonomous vehicles (SAVs) could have the potential to preserve driving independence of this population with high health needs. This paper explores if SAVs could be used as a cognitive assistive device for older aging drivers with cognitive challenges. We illustrate the impact of age-related changes of cognitive functions on driving capacity. Furthermore, following an overview on the current state of SAVs, we propos

A Novel One-Step Small Object Detector for Autonomous Aerial Vehicles.

Detecting small objects in aerial images is significantly challenging due to their nonuniform distribution and severe scale variations resulting from changing view angles. Because autonomous aerial vehicles have limited computational power, balancing detection accuracy and efficiency remains a challenging problem. Existing methods, e.g., feature pyramid network (FPN)-based algorithms, concentrate on fusing deep low-resolution features with shallow high-resolution features and primarily rely on simple stacking and channel fusion. However, features of small objects are easily affected by unpredi

YOLO-Night: Lighting the Path for Autonomous Vehicles with Robust Nighttime Perception.

Despite substantial progress in visual perception, object detection systems for autonomous driving still exhibit pronounced performance degradation in nighttime and low-light conditions, where reduced signal-to-noise ratio, blurred object boundaries, and scale ambiguity challenge reliable recognition. Existing YOLO-based detectors, primarily optimized for daytime imagery, struggle to maintain robustness under such adverse illumination. To address these issues, we propose YOLO-Night, a nighttime-oriented object detection framework that enhances the YOLO11 architecture through a structured integ

Amino acid transporters mediate autonomous delivery of nanoparticle vehicles into living plants.

Presence of the cell wall and the lack of streamlined pathways for cellular delivery of external agents into plants is a core challenge of plant biotechnology and crop engineering development. However, both viral and bacterial transmission have their own restrictions and the few non-heavy metal nanodelivery platforms require external forces for tissue penetration. Such dependency limits any high-throughput application considering the large plant numbers to be treated in the field or even laboratory exercises. Herein, we demonstrate Aspartic acid (Asp) decorated poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Path-Following Control for Underactuated Autonomous Underwater Vehicles.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) face significant challenges in path-following control due to strong environmental disturbances and model uncertainties. To address these issues, this paper proposes a model-free deep reinforcement learning framework, named ILLT (Improved LOS-LSTM-TD3), which integrates an integral line-of-sight (LOS) guidance law with the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm. The framework treats the LOS look-ahead distance as a learnable optimization variable and incorporates an LSTM network to capture temporal motion dependencies. A progressive

Frequency Shaping-Based Control Framework for Reducing Motion Sickness in Autonomous Vehicles.

This study introduces a motion-sickness-reducing control strategy aimed at enhancing ride comfort in Electric Autonomous Vehicles (EAVs). For lateral control, the forward look-ahead distance was adaptively adjusted based on the Motion Sickness Dose Value (MSDV) analysis from ISO 2631-1, effectively mitigating lateral acceleration and its motion-sickness-related frequency components, leading to a reduced MSDV. For longitudinal control, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) optimal control was applied to minimize acceleration, complemented by a band-stop filter specifically designed to attenuate moti

There is a large amount of research currently being done on autonomous micro-aerial vehicles (MAV), such as quadrotor helicopters or quadcopters. The ability to create a working autonomous MAV depends mainly on integrating a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) solution with the rest of the system. This paper provides an introduction for creating an autonomous MAV for enclosed environments, aimed at students and professionals alike. The standard autonomous system and MAV automation are discussed, while we focus on the core concepts of SLAM systems and trajectory planning algorithms. Th
