The gosling gout, a newly emerged disease, has widely broken out in China since 2017. Typical signs for the disease include diarrhea, anorexia, depression, dehydration, emaciation and paralysis. At autopsy, uratosis was the main pathological change which could be found at kidney, pericardium, air sac, muscle and leg joint. In this study, gosling gout was firstly diagnosed by metagenomic analysis. Samples of kidney, Fabricius bursa, spleen and jejunum were collected and submitted to next-generation DNA sequencing. Our results demonstrated that goose avastrovirus was highly related with this dis

Currently, both goose astrovirus (GoAstV) and goose-origin Newcastle disease virus (NDV) are widely infectious agents for goslings. There is no vaccine for GoAstV. Capsid protein can elicit a neutralizing antibody in human astroviruses (HAstV). Molecular analysis of the genomic region encoding the capsid protein(ORF2) of goose astrovirus has revealed that it contains neutralizing epitopes. Goose-origin NDV is also an infectious agent. A wide range of NDV strains exist that can be commonly used as vaccine vectors. In the present study, the fusion protein cleavage site RRQKR↓F in a backbone of t

Since early 2016, the Chinese goose industry has experienced severe outbreaks of gout; however, the etiological factor of the disease is still unclear. Here, we investigated the possible involvement of viral infection in the disease. Using sequence-independent PCR amplification, astrovirus sequences were generated from a gout case. Full-length genomic sequencing and sequence analysis of three goose astrovirus (GoAstV) strains revealed that they belong to a new avastrovirus most closely related to viruses classified within species Avastrovirus 3. The GoAstV was detected in 16/16 gout cases coll

In the spring of 2023, several "broiler breeder" and "broiler" farms in North Lebanon were affected by a disease that impaired general performance and caused severe daily mortalities. Despite antibiotic treatments, there was no significant improvement. Serological analysis indicated that the flocks were protected against Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD), Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), Avian Influenza (AI), and Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV). However, necropsy revealed severe liver lesions and swollen kidneys. This study investigated the possible presence of avian adenovirus (FAdV), which cau

A novel gout disease, characterized by visceral urate deposition with high-mortality, with outbreaks in goslings in China since 2016 was caused by a novel goose astrovirus (GoAstV) and resulted in serious economic loss. However, the epidemiology and variation of the GoAstV in goslings in southern China and its evolutionary history as well as the classification of the GoAstV are unclear. In the present study, systematic molecular epidemiology, and phylogenetic analyses of the GoAstV were conducted to address these issues. Our results showed that the GoAstV is widespread in goslings in southern

Novel goose astrovirus (NGAstV) is a member of the genus Avain Avastrovirus (AAstV) and the family Astroviridae. NGAstV-associated gout disease has caused huge economic losses to the goose industry worldwide. Since early 2020, NGAstV infections characterized by articular and visceral gout emerged continuously in China. Herein, we isolated a GAstV strain from goslings with fatal gout disease and sequenced its complete genome nucleotide sequence. Then we conducted systematic genetic diversity and evolutionary analysis. The results demonstrated that two genotypic species of GAstV (GAstV-I and GAs

Runting stunting syndrome (RSS) in commercial chickens has been reported worldwide, and although several studies have attempted to clarify the cause and describe the lesions, there are gaps in knowledge of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and etiology. The study objective was to use commercial chicks naturally affected by RSS to describe the histologic changes of RSS in all segments of the small intestine in chicks of different ages and to identify viral gene sequences in affected chicks and their association with histologic lesions. Chicks lacking clinical signs but from the same houses and fr

Astroviruses are recognized as a leading cause of gastroenteritis in humans and animals. They are also associated with extra-intestinal diseases, such as hepatitis in ducklings, nephritis in chickens, and encephalitis in cattle. In February 2017, a fatal infection of goslings characterized by visceral urate deposition was reported in the Shandong province, China. Our systematic investigation led to the isolation of an astrovirus, designated AAstV/Goose/CHN/2017/SD01, and similar disease was reproduced by experimental infection of healthy goslings, fulfilling Koch's postulates. The isolated ast

Astrovirus infection significantly impacts poultry production due to its fatal effect on young birds and their ability to be transmitted by horizontal and vertical routes. In the current study, eight Egyptian duckling farms from different breeds (Moulard, Muscovy, and Pekin) with a history of sudden death accompanied by neurological signs with marked hepatitis lesions at Al-Qalyubia, Al-Sharqia, and Assuit governorates from 2022 to 2023 have been investigated. All the examined freshly dead ducklings have a history of vaccination with the live attenuated duck hepatitis vaccine. During the labor

Chicken astroviruses (CAstV) were associated with retarded growth, enteritis, kidney diseases, and white chick syndrome. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of CAstV infection on growth, performance, and gross and histopathological picture of commercial chicken flocks suffering increased culling rate and decreased performance. Samples were collected for virus isolation, identification, and sequencing on day one, 15 days, and 30 days of age. Body weight, feed conversion rate, and mortality rates were determined. A gross examination was performed, and tissue samples from the li

Chicken astrovirus (CAstV) is associated with kidney disease and visceral gout, runting and stunting syndrome, and white chick hatchery disease, causing economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. In this study, 55.6% of 36 clinical samples from Guangdong province in China were positive for CAstV, but negative for other common enteric viruses, including avian nephritis virus, infectious bronchitis virus, fowl adenovirus Group I, Newcastle disease virus, chicken parvovirus, reovirus, and rotavirus by PCRs and RT-PCRs. A CAstV strain, named GD202013, was isolated from Guangdong province i

Goose astrovirus (GoAstV) is an emerging avian pathogen that induces gout in goslings with a mortality of up to 50%. Organ damage caused by GoAstV infection was considered the cause of gout, but it is still unclear whether other factors are involved. Human and murine studies have linked the gut microbiome-derived urate and gout, thus we hypothesized that gut microbiome may also play an important role in gout induced by GoAstV infection. This study tested the pathogenicity of our isolated GoAstV genotype 2 strain on goslings, while the appearance of clinical signs, histopathological changes, vi

Goose astrovirus (GAstV) has been widespread in China since 2016, causing significant growth inhibition and gout symptoms in goslings and leading to substantial economic losses in the goose industry. To better understand the epidemiological characteristics of GAstV in Guangdong Province, 682 samples were collected from geese with suspected GAstV infection across different regions of Guangdong Province from January 2022 to January 2024. Virus isolation, identification, and genetic evolution analysis were performed. The results showed that all samples were GAstV positive, with 52.64% co-infected

Avian astroviruses, including chicken astrovirus (CAstV), avian nephritisvirus (ANV), and goose astrovirus (GoAstV), are ubiquitous enteric RNA viruses associated with enteric disorders in avian species. Recent research has found that infection of these astroviruses usually cause visceral gout in chicken, duckling and gosling. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In the current article, we review recent discoveries of genetic diversity and variation of these astroviruses, as well as pathogenesis after astrovirus infection. In addition, we discuss the relation between avian astrov

It is well-established that the genetic diversity, regional prevalence, and broad host range of astroviruses significantly impact the poultry industry. In July 2022, a small-scale commercial broiler farm in China reported cases of growth retardation and a 3% mortality rate. From chickens displaying proventriculitis and pancreatitis, three chicken astroviruses (CAstV) isolates were obtained and named SDAU2022-1-3. Complete genomic sequencing and analysis revealed the unique characteristics of these isolates from known CAstV strains in ORF1a, ORF1b, and ORF2 genes, characterized by an unusually

Gosling gout has posed a serious threat to the development of the China's goose industry since the outbreak in mainland China in 2016; goose astrovirus (GAstV) was identified as the culprit pathogen. Two genotypes of this virus have been identified: GAstV-1 and GAstV-2, of which GAstV-2 is the main epidemic strain. Our current understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of GAstV-2 remains limited. To assess pathogenicity, 1-day-old goslings were inoculated with the GAstV-2 YC20 strain via the subcutaneous, intranasal, and oral infection routes. All the goslings showed typical gout symptoms, wit

Waterfowl astrovirus cause viral hepatitis, nephritis, and gout in ducklings and goslings, leading to growth retardation, reduced production performance, and poor feed conversion, and thereby pose a substantial threat to the waterfowl industry. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of waterfowl astrovirus by screening 293 samples from 30 batches collected from Shandong, Guangdong, Sichuan, Henan, and Liaoning provinces in China. Among the 27 samples obtained in Guangzhou, 12 tested positives for goose astrovirus (GAstV), yielding a positivity rate of 44.4 %, and all infected geese died

Goose astroviruses (GoAstVs) are small non-enveloped viruses with a genome consisting of a single-stranded positive-sense RNA molecule. A novel GoAstV was identified in Shandong in 2016 and quickly spread to other provinces in China, causing gout in goslings, with a mortality rate of approximately 50%. GoAstV can also cause gout in chickens and ducks, indicating its ability to cross the species barrier. GoAstV has only been reported in China, where it has caused serious losses to the goose-breeding industry. However, in view of its cross-species transmission ability and pathogenicity in chicke

In recent years, an infection in geese caused by goose astrovirus (GAstV) has repeatedly occurred in coastal areas of China and rapidly spread to inland provinces. The infection is characterized by joint and visceral gout and is fatal. The disease has caused huge economic losses to China's goose industry. GAstV is a nonenveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus. As it is a novel virus, there is no specific classification. Here, we review the current understanding of GAstV. The virus structure, isolation, diagnosis and detection, innate immune regulation, and transmission route are di
