Structural characteristics of two pectic polysaccharides from Avicennia marina fruit.

Pectic polysaccharides in A. marina fruit exhibit excellent prebiotic effects and may be the key to treating constipation and dysentery; however, their detailed structures still need to be clarified. In this study, we obtained two pectic polysaccharide fractions (AMFPs-3-2 and AMFPs-3-4) from this fruit for the first time and comprehensively investigated their fine structures using chemical methods, GC-MS, and 1D and 2D-NMR. AMFPs-3-2 was identified as a type I rhamnogalacturonan (RG-I) with a backbone composed of →2)-α-Rhap-(1 → 4)-α-GalpA-(1→, and the side chains mainly consisted of arabinan

Molecular cloning and expression of AmCDPK from mangrove Avicennia marina under elevated temperature.

Considered as an essential calcium sensor, the calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) family plays a critical part in terrestrial plants' responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses. In the study, Avicennia marina was proved to have better heat tolerance than other species. A CDPK gene was cloned from mangrove species A. marina using RACE-PCR and designated as AmCDPK. By predicting and analyzing its properties, structures and expression patterns, we found that the amino acid sequence, containing a kinase domain and four EF-hand Ca2+-binding sites, shared high identity with Handroanthus impe

Direct uptake of canopy rainwater causes turgor-driven growth spurts in the mangrove Avicennia marina.

Mangrove forests depend on a dense structure of sufficiently large trees to fulfil their essential functions as providers of food and wood for animals and people, CO2 sinks and protection from storms. Growth of these forests is known to be dependent on the salinity of soil water, but the influence of foliar uptake of rainwater as a freshwater source, additional to soil water, has hardly been investigated. Under field conditions in Australia, stem diameter variation, sap flow and stem water potential of the grey mangrove (Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh.) were simultaneously measured during al

Epidermal and subepidermal changes during the formation of hairy galls induced by Eriophyidae on Avicennia schaueriana leaves.

Leaf-galling Eriophyidae (Acarina) may promote simple or complex alterations in the organs of their host plants, such as an increase in indumentum density or the reorganization of epidermis and ground system tissue patterns. To test if hairy galls of Eriophyidae on Avicennia schaueriana (Acanthaceae) are related to complex changes, leaf galls in distinct developmental phases were compared to non-galled leaves using anatomical, histochemical, and histometric analyses. Quantitative comparisons of preferential gall induction sites and gall area according to distinct leaf portions were made to eva
