Two novel aerobic, rod-shaped, motile bacterial strains, designated as sgz302134T and sgz301742T, were isolated from paddy soil in Fujian Province. Strains sgz302134T and sgz301742T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains Azospirillum isscasi C340-1T (98.2%) and Azospirillum thiophilum DSM 21654T (97.4%), respectively. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that two strains clustered with members of the genus Azospirillum. Growth of strains sgz302134T and sgz301742T was observed at 10-45 °C, pH 5.0-9.5 and 0-0.5% (w/v) NaCl and 15-37

Pathogenic Leptospira spp. represent one cause of leptospirosis worldwide and have long been regarded as solitary organisms in soil and aquatic environments. However, in the present study, Leptospira interrogans was observed to be associated with environmental biofilms with 21 bacterial isolates belonging to 10 genera. All 21 isolates were examined for their coaggregation and biofilm-forming ability with leptospires in vitro. Among these, Azospirillum brasilense RMRCPB showed maximum interspecies coaggregation with leptospiral strains (>75%, visual score of +4). Other significant coaggregating

The water deficit in particular, reduces the productivity of vegetable crops. To minimize these harmful effects on agriculture, several agronomic and physiological practices are being studied, such as the use of bacteria and water stress attenuators, such as brassinosteroids. Considering the socioeconomic relevance of corn culture and its sensitivity when exposed to water deficit, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the action of brassinosteroids and azospirillum on nitrogen metabolism in corn plants subjected to water stress conditions. The experiment was carried out in a green

The study was undertaken to analyze the rate of uptake and utilization of various amino acids by Azospirillum brasilense Sp81 (RG) in a basal mineral salts solution under non-nitrogen fixing condition. These amino acids including other nitrogenous compounds were tested for both N- and C-sources. The kinetic constants (Km and Vmax) of uptake of some amino acids (e.g. lysine, arginine, proline, glutamine and glutamic acid) were exploited using a Hanes-Woolf plot, and discussed in the context of nitrogen starvation or both carbon and nitrogen starvation. To summarize all the kinetic data for thes

The structure of lipid A from Azospirillum lipoferum, a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium, was investigated. It was determined by chemical analysis, mass spectrometric methods, as well as 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Because of the presence of substituents, the investigated lipid A differs from typical enterobacterial lipid A molecules. Its backbone is composed of a beta-(1,6)-linked D-glucosamine disaccharide but lacks phosphate residues. Moreover, the reducing end of the backbone (position C-1) is substituted with alpha-linked d-galacturonic acid. 3-hydroxypalmitoyl residues are exclusive

The rhizosphere bacterium Azospirillum brasilense produces the auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) through the indole-3-pyruvate pathway. As we previously demonstrated that transcription of the indole-3-pyruvate decarboxylase (ipdC) gene is positively regulated by IAA, produced by A. brasilense itself or added exogenously, we performed a microarray analysis to study the overall effects of IAA on the transcriptome of A. brasilense. The transcriptomes of A. brasilense wild-type and the ipdC knockout mutant, both cultured in the absence and presence of exogenously added IAA, were compared.Interferin

Iron (Fe) deficiency limits crop productivity, particularly in alkaline soils where Fe availability is low. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), such as Azospirillum brasilense, may enhance plant nutrient acquisition. Here, we investigated the transcriptional modulations underlying the interaction between cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and A. brasilense under Fe sufficient and Fe deficient conditions through physiological and transcriptomic analyses. Bacterial inoculation significantly increased root ferric-chelate reductase activity, particularly under Fe deficiency. Transcriptomic profil

The endotoxic activities of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) isolated from different strains of rhizobia and rhizobacteria (Bradyrhizobium, Mesorhizobium, and Azospirillum) were compared to those of Salmonella enterica sv. Typhimurium LPS. The biological activity of all the examined preparations, measured as Limulus lysate gelation, production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and nitrogen oxide (NO) induction in human myelomonocytic cells (line THP-1), was considerably lower than that of the reference enterobacterial endotoxin. The effects of copper ions on the uptake of some essential metals in the biomass and the electrooptical properties of cell suspensions of the nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium Azospirillum brasilense sp. 245 were studied. Copper cations were shown to be effectively taken up by the cell biomass from the culture medium. The addition of copper ions increased the rate of uptake of some other metals present in the culture medium. This was accompanied by changes in the electrooptical characteristics of cell suspension as measured within the orienting electric field frequency range of 10 to 10,000 kHz.

We investigated the effects of Azospirillum brasilense strains Ab-V5 and Ab-V6 in the induction of mechanisms of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and induced system resistance (ISR) on maize (Zea mays L.) plants. Under normal growth conditions, the treatments consisted of the standard inoculation of cells at sowing, and leaf spray of cells or their metabolites at the V2.5 growth stage; under saline stress (170 mM NaCl), the treatment consisted of standard single and co-inoculation of A. brasilense and Rhizobium tropici. The main compounds in the Azospirillum metabolites were identified as in

Azospirillum lipoferum RG20, a nitrogen-fixing bacterium found in all kind of soils, was found to be naturally resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. 6-beta-Bromopenicillanic acid, an irreversible inhibitor of serine-beta-lactamases, completely abolished this resistance. A beta-lactamase was purified 518-fold from a cell-free extract of A. lipoferum RG20. A single band on SDS-PAGE (apparent molecular mass 31000 Da) and on isoelectric focussing (pI9.35) was observed with the purified protein. The enzyme hydrolysed benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, cephalothin and cephaloridine with comparable

The complete nucleotide sequence of the A. brasilense fixA, fixB, fixC, and fixX genes is reported here. Sequence similarities between the protein sequences deduced from fixABCX genes and many electron transfer flavoproteins (ETFs) have been noted. Comparison of the amino acid sequences of both subunits of ETF with the A. brasilense fixA and fixB gene products exhibits an identity of 30%. The amino acid sequence of the other two genes, fixC and fixX, revealed similarity with the membrane-bound electron transfer flavoprotein ubiquinone oxidoreductase (ETF-QO). Using site-directed mutagenesis, m

The response of rice plants to inoculation with an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Azospirillum brasilense, or combination of both microorganisms, was assayed under well-watered or drought stress conditions. Water deficit treatment was imposed by reducing the amount of water added, but AM plants, with a significantly higher biomass, received the same amount of water as non-AM plants, with a poor biomass. Thus, the water stress treatment was more severe for AM plants than for non-AM plants. The results showed that AM colonization significantly enhanced rice growth under both water condition

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a compound produced by the Azospirillum genus to ensure its adaptation and survival in stressful conditions. Particularly, the PHB production by Azospirillum brasilense is related to improving colonization and promoting plant growth during its interaction with plants. Nowadays, this bacterium is considered a suitable partner to improve microalgal performance during the biogas upgrade process-an effluent with a stressful composition (25% CO2-75% CH4) for this bacterium. Thus, the present study evaluates changes in gene expression and PHB production by A. brasilense

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) contamination in soil poses a serious hazard because it hinders plant growth, which eventually reduces crop yield and raises the possibility of a food shortage. Cr's harmful effects interfere with crucial plant functions like photosynthesis and respiration, reducing energy output, causing oxidative stress, and interfering with nutrient intake. In this study, the negative effects of Cr on mung beans are examined, as well as investigate the effectiveness of Azospirillum brasilense and salicylic acid in reducing Cr-induced stress.
RESULTS: We investigated how different

Fungal diseases accounts for nearly 30-40% of global crop yield losses, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides. Azospirillum spp., traditionally recognized for plant growth promotion, have emerged as potent biocontrol agent with multifaceted defense functions. Beyond niche competition and siderophore production, Azospirillum primes host immunity through reprogramming primary and secondary metabolism and activating systemic defense pathways such as salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and induced systemic resistance (ISR). Metabolomic analyses reveal its i

The effects of ten fungicides, six herbicides and four insecticides on the nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azospirillum brasilense were examined. The fungicides captan and thiram were the most toxic among the compounds tested. Cell growth and nitrogenase activity of the bacterium were markedly inhibited by low concentrations of the two fungicides. Antidote 1,8-naphthalic anhydride increased by a factor of 2 the cellular level of glutathione. The addition of the antidote in the presence of captan or thiram caused a similar increase in the glutathione content, but at the same time enhanced the toxicit
