OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe six cases of migrating azygos vein and to explain the etiologic factors that contribute to the migration. Six patients with migrating azygos vein were studied by MDCT before and after migration. Five patients had right pneumothorax. All patients had repeated episodes of cough, vomiting, and a short mesoazygos.
CONCLUSION: Pneumothorax, increased intrathoracic pressure, and a short mesoazygos, in combination or alone, are the main factors in azygos vein migration.

The saccular aneurysm of the azygos vein is an extremely rare condition, which when located in the path of an accesory pulmonary fissure, becomes a diagnostic challenge because it can be mistaken for tumors arising from the accesory pleura, like solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura or mesothelioma. The diagnosis should ideally be done by non-invasive methods such as CT or MR angiographic technique in multiple phases, thus avoiding unnecessary surgical intervention. This case is exceptional because, to our knowledge, it is the first to report both concomitant clinical situations, an aneurysm of

The continuation of the azygos vein with the inferior vena cava and a well demarcated azygos lobe of the right lung were detected during routine dissection of a 65-years-old white male cadaver. The azygos arch was found dilated and malpositioned to create an aberrant azygos fissure in the right superior lobe which, was occupied by a fold of parietal pleura. The developmental and clinical significance of the azygos lobe is discussed.

The azygos veins in thirty six cadavers (26 adult bodies, 10 human fetuses) were examined with special reference to the correlation with the midline of the vertebral column. The azygos veins were often observed to cross the middle of the ventral side of the vertebral column from right to left, and the occurrence of this crossing to the left is more frequent than that previously described--occurring in twenty two of the adult bodies. In three of the adult bodies, the vein ran upwards along the midline. In the remaining adult, the azygos vein ascended on the right side only of the vertebral colu

Azygos vein aneurysm is a rare thoracic disease that often mimics posterior mediastinum tumors. Pathogenesis of azygos vein aneurysm is unclear. Discussions about possible causes are still ongoing. Most aneurysms are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during standard examinations. Severe complications of azygos vein aneurysm include rupture with massive bleeding and pulmonary embolism. Contrast-enhanced chest CT and MRI are essential. Differential diagnosis includes tumors, cysts and rare neoplasms of the mediastinum. Treatment algorithm is not established. There are traditional surgical

The azygos venous system, which comprises the azygos, hemiazygos, and accessory hemiazygos veins, assists in blood drainage into the superior vena cava (SVC) from the thoracic cage and portions of the posterior mediastinum. Routine dissection of a fresh-frozen cadaveric specimen revealed a split azygos vein. The azygos vein branched off the inferior vena cava (IVC) at the level of the second lumbar vertebra as a single trunk and then split into two tributaries after forming a venous plexus. The right side of this system drained into the SVC and, inferiorly, the collective system drained into t

Azygos vein varix is a very rare disease associated with a risk of rupture or thrombosis. Here, we report a case of azygos vein varix mimicking bronchogenic cysts. A 79-year-old female patient presented with abnormal shadows on a chest X-ray during an annual check-up. A plain chest computed tomography (CT) showed a well-defined tumour, approximately 66 X 65 X 45 mm in size, behind the trachea. An enhanced CT scan was refused due to asthma complications. A high signal on T2W1 images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a cystic tumour. Diagnosed as a bronchogenic cyst, a cyst excisio

We report a case of a "migrating" azygos vein developing after an abrupt spinal deformity adjacent to the azygos arch. A woman with a previously identified azygos lobe had a follow-up chest computed tomography that demonstrated the azygos vein dislocated medially to the fissure in its usual mediastinal position. The azygos lobe was intact. The woman had developed kyphosis angled at the level of the T4 vertebra, where the azygos vein arches anteriorly.

INTRODUCTION: The human azygos vein (AV) generally runs on the right side of the vertebral column. However, a shift in its course to the middle/left side of the vertebral column, potentially as a result of aging, has been reported. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between AV displacement and aging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven adult cadavers were dissected. When an AV left shift was observed, long axis AV length was measured by calculating the number of vertebral bodies under the vein. We also investigated whether a crossover vein existed between AV and hemiazygo

Knowledge of variations of azygos and hemiazygos veins is of importance to cardiothoracic surgeons and radiologists during various surgical, radiological, and echography techniques. We report some unique variations of azygos system of veins observed during dissection classes for undergraduate medical students. The azygos vein was formed as usual by the union of right subcostal and ascending lumbar veins. The vein ascended upward and to the left to reach the midline at the level of the 9th thoracic vertebra. After ascending till 5th thoracic vertebra, it gradually inclined to the right of midli

Injuries to the azygos vein in a blunt chest trauma are uncommon and have previously been described in only 21 cases. The diagnosis is crucially based on massive right haemothorax with signs of shock, hypotension and altered mental status. The severity of the trauma, speed of transport and surgical intervention are often decisive for the survival of the patient. This is confirmed by the three cases we report below.

A case is described in which a two-year-old boy, diagnosed with common atrioventricular canal, pulmonary atresia, major aortopulmonary collateral artery, asplenia, and situs inversus, underwent palliative operations for the following: unifocalization of the right major aortopulmonary collateral artery, right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery shunt, and pulmonary artery plasty. Upon completion of the bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt operation, we addressed the stenotic lesions of the superior vena cava and left pulmonary artery, and a markedly expanded azygos vein. During this operation, the super

The azygos vein ascends along the thoracic spine through the mediastinum and drains into the superior vena cava at the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra. Fracture-dislocation of the mid-thoracic spine, as a result of blunt thoracic trauma, can tear the azygos vein. Four such fatal cases (three motor vehicle accidents and one fall) were studied, only one of which was recognized prior to death. The vein can also be torn, in the absence of skeletal injuries, by horizontal acceleration/deceleration forces. The pathologist must consider azygos vein laceration as a possible cause of either hemot

Subcutaneous venous port or 'portacath' devices are widely used, especially in oncology patients. Several potential complications of portacath devices have been well documented. We report a rare case of the spontaneous migration of the tip of a portacath into the azygos vein, with subsequent development of a tracheo-azygos fistula. This resulted in the patient receiving a dose of chemotherapy agent and saline directly into his lungs, which ultimately contributed to his death a few weeks later. To our knowledge, there have been only 10 previously reported cases of inadvertent intrathoracic (med

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia is one of the most common life-threatening congenital malformations and is defined as an interruption in the continuity of the esophagus with or without fistula to the trachea or bronchi. Definitive treatment is surgical ligation of the fistula if present and esophageal end-to-end anastomosis of the two pouches, thereby reconstructing the continuity of the esophagus. During this procedure, the surgeon may choose to either ligate or preserve the azygos vein, a major draining vein for the esophagus and surrounding structures, but no definitive consensus on the matt

An incidence of a left superior vena cava with a left azygos vein was found in a cadaver during an Osaka Dental University student's dissection practice session in 2002. The left superior vena cava began from the confluence between the right and left brachiocephalic veins, and extended directly into the left superior edge of the coronary sinus. No right superior vena cava was observed. The left azygos vein, receiving the bilateral intercostal veins, extended into the left superior vena cava. The developmental mechanism of the left superior vena cava was considered as follows; because the proxi

Congenital anomalies of respiratory system are quite diverse and not all of them are subject to surgical treatment. One example is accessory lobe of the azygos vein. This anomaly usually has no clinical manifestations and requires only follow-up, as well as attention in surgery on the right half of the chest for some other disease. This situation changes when complications occur, for example, purulent-inflammatory process. Therapy is not always effective, and lung tissue destruction requires surgical treatment. Progressive destruction complicates diagnosis and choosing surgical tactics. We pre

The normal mouse is expected to have a single and left-sided azygos vein that develops from the paired embryonic cardinal venous system and drains most of the right and left thoracic walls into the left anterior vena cava. During routine autopsies of adult mice, most individuals of the C57BL/6J strain were found to have this pattern but a distribution of different azygos venous patterns was found in the WB/ReJ strain. In WB/ReJ the patterns varied from a single unpaired vein on the right side that connected to the right anterior vena cava through bilaterally symmetrical and paired veins to the
