Pseudo-outbreak of Bacillaceae species associated with poor compliance with blood culture collection recommendations.

PURPOSE: This study describes a pseudo-outbreak of Bacillaceae spp. bloodstream infections that spanned five months starting in May 2023 and the infection prevention measures implemented to control it. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary infectious disease hospital in Bucharest, Romania. An observational audit of the blood culture collection practice in our hospital was performed, and the materials used during blood culture collection were sampled. Bacterial colonies were identified using MALDI Biotyper. The Bacillaceae blood culture positivity rates in the previous

[Maxillary sinus infection by Bacillus licheniformis: a case report from Djibouti].

Aerobic, spore-forming gram-positive Bacillus spp infections are rare and reported mainly in immunocompromised hosts. We report a case of acute unilateral maxillary sinusitis, caused by Bacillus licheniformis, in a 35-year-old French soldier stationed in Djibouti. It was easily identifiable due to its typical culture and resistance profile. This case is interesting for two reasons: first, it is, to our knowledge, the first case of sinusitis attributed to this microbe, and second, it has rarely been described in immunocompetent patients without altered skin or mucous membranes.

Potential role of Demodex mites and bacteria in the induction of rosacea.

Rosacea is a common dermatological condition that predominantly affects the central regions of the face. Rosacea affects up to 3 % of the world's population and a number of subtypes are recognized. Rosacea can be treated with a variety of antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline or metronidazole) yet no role for bacteria or microbes in its aetiology has been conclusively established. The density of Demodex mites in the skin of rosacea patients is higher than in controls, suggesting a possible role for these mites in the induction of this condition. In addition, Bacillus oleronius, known to be sensitive

Infective endophthalmitis caused by Bacillus cereus after cataract extraction surgery.

We describe a 72-year-old Chinese man who developed fulminant Bacillus cereus endophthalmitis 36 h after an uneventful surgery for cataract extraction. Clinical progression of disease was extremely rapid, in spite of early vitrectomy and intravitreal injection of antibiotics. Results of Gram staining showed gram-positive bacilli, and the culture was positive for B. cereus. Endophthalmitis is rare after cataract surgery (cumulative probability within 1 year, approximately 0.08%), and cases caused by B. cereus are even less common. The prognosis and plan of treatment are discussed.

Necrotizing fasciitis and myonecrosis "synergistic necrotizing cellulitis" caused by Bacillus cereus.

Our patient was a 37-year-old man with diabetes mellitus and hepatopathy as underlying diseases. Swelling, erythema and pain appeared in the left upper limb on the day before the initial examination. On examination, diffuse purpura was noted on the left upper limb, and, as it rapidly extended to the left upper trunk, emergency surgery was performed. Intraoperatively, gas-producing necrosis was observed not only in subcutaneous tissues but also from the fascia to muscle tissues, and the condition resembled clostridial gas gangrene. However, as the culturing of samples from the lesion yielded Ba

Aerobic Vaginal Microflora in Gestational and Non-Gestational Bitches (Canis lupus familiaris).

The vaginal tract comprises commensal microorganisms, which play an essential role in the health of the reproductive tract. Any dysbiosis in the vaginal microenvironment may lead to severe urinary tract infections or even infertility. This study aimed to evaluate the aerobic bacterial flora isolated from vaginal samples from 100 lactating bitches in the antepartum period (n = 3), postpartum period (n = 80), and with Lactatio sine graviditate (n = 17). Before vaginal swabs, all the bitches went through a gynecology consult, along with milk and blood sampling. Standard microbiological techniques

Cutaneous bacterial species from Lithobates catesbeianus can inhibit pathogenic dermatophytes.

Antibiotics are being successfully used to fight many infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms. However, new infectious diseases are continuously being identified, and some known pathogens are becoming resistant against known antibiotics. Furthermore, many antifungals are causing serious side effects in long-term treatments of patients, and many skin infections caused by dermatophytes are difficult to cure. The beneficial roles of resident cutaneous microbiota to inhibit pathogenic microorganisms have been shown for many vertebrate species. Microbial symbionts on the amphibian s

Bacillus cereus and related species.

Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive aerobic or facultatively anaerobic spore-forming rod. It is a cause of food poisoning, which is frequently associated with the consumption of rice-based dishes. The organism produces an emetic or diarrheal syndrome induced by an emetic toxin and enterotoxin, respectively. Other toxins are produced during growth, including phospholipases, proteases, and hemolysins, one of which, cereolysin, is a thiol-activated hemolysin. These toxins may contribute to the pathogenicity of B. cereus in nongastrointestinal disease. B. cereus isolated from clinical material othe

[Infections caused by intravascular catheters].

Microbiological investigations showed a positive culture in 430 out of 1540 venous catheters and shunts for dialysis. In 21 cases, a mixed culture with two different specific organisms was present. Of the total of 451 isolated organisms, 362 were gram-positive cocci and only 56 gram-negative bacillaceae. Staphylococcus epidermidis was by far the most frequent pathogen (n = 228), staphylococcus aureus in second place (n = 94). Among the gram-negative organisms, germs of the Klebsiella-Enterobacter group and Pseudomonas aeruginosa dominated. Staphylococcus aureus represented 31% of all germs iso

Bacterial Diversity and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Sparus aurata from Aquaculture.

In a world where the population continues to increase and the volume of fishing catches stagnates or even falls, the aquaculture sector has great growth potential. This study aimed to contribute to the depth of knowledge of the diversity of bacterial species found in Sparus aurata collected from a fish farm and to understand which profiles of diminished susceptibility to antibiotics would be found in these bacteria that might be disseminated in the environment. One hundred thirty-six bacterial strains were recovered from the S. aurata samples. These strains belonged to Bacillaceae, Bacillales

[The effect of heterologous bacilli on the infectious process in anthrax in an experiment].

The possibility of the survival of guinea pigs after the simultaneous administration of different doses of Bacillus anthracis virulent strain 81/1 in combination with both B. anthracis vaccine strain STI and heterologous bacilli (B. subtilis strain PAC) has been experimentally shown. On the basis of the results of these experiments suggestion has been made that the "survival phenomenon" is the process involving the lysosomal systems of polymorphonuclear and mononuclear phagocytes.

Fatal community-acquired Bacillus cereus pneumonia in an immunocompetent adult man: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus cereus is a gram-positive rod bacterium that is responsible for food poisoning. It is naturally widely distributed, and thus often contaminates cultures. Although it is rarely considered responsible, it can cause serious infections under certain conditions. However, lethal infections, especially in immunocompetent patients, are rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 60-year-old man developed community-acquired B. cereus pneumonia and alveolar hemorrhage unveiled by abrupt chest pain and hemoptysis with no other advance symptoms. B. cereus induced silent alveolar destruction w

[Changes in Acholeplasma laidlawii plasma membrane functions during development of resistance to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline].

The role of transport activity of Acholeplasma laidlawii plasmatic membrane in the development of resistance to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline was investigated. It was shown that one of the important steps of resistance development in acholeplasms is a complex of adaptation metabolic reactions providing limited antibiotic accumulation by the cells. In the case of ciprofloxacin resistance metabolism changes concerning transport systems took place before mutations in target genes. Development of tetracycline resistance of mollecutes after incubation in the medium with enhancing antibiotic concen

Bacillus cereus meningitis complicating cerebrospinal fluid fistula repair and spinal drainage.

Non-anthrax Bacillus species are rare, but serious causes of bacterial meningitis in those either immunocompromised or treated with CSF diversion. Although resistant to first-line antibiotics, they usually respond to chloramphenicol. We report a case of fulminant Bacillus cereus meningitis that complicated lumbar spinal drainage which proved resistant to all first-line antibiotics including chloramphenicol.

A double-edged sword of probiotic: Alkalihalobacillus clausii bacteremia in a child.

Invasive infections by the probiotic bacteria are a rare occurrence. We report a case of bacteremia by Alkalihalobacillus clausii in a 5-month-old child with leukocyte adhesion defect. The child had developed recurrent infections, and failure to thrive, requiring multiple hospitalizations. He was being treated with probiotics for diarrheal illness and subsequently developed severe respiratory distress, elevated inflammatory markers and marked leukocytosis. Blood culture grew a Gram-positive bacillus identified as Alkalihalobacillus clausii. Child showed symptomatic improvement after antimicrob
