»: Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) 5% has been shown to reduce Cutibacterium acnes load on the skin. BPO 5% with miconazole nitrate (MN) 2% may be beneficial, whereas BPO 5% with clindamycin cream 1% to 1.2% does not seem to have additive effects when compared with BPO 5% alone. Chlorhexidine gluconate solutions reduce the total bacterial load on the skin, but do not seem to have a significant effect on C. acnes.
»: ChloraPrep seems to be the best surgical skin preparation to decrease overall positive skin cultures. Preincisional hydrogen peroxide 3% application has been shown to be a cost-effective p

Rationale: The principal underlying inhaled antibiotic treatment in bronchiectasis is that airway bacterial load drives inflammation, and therefore antibiotic treatment will reduce symptoms. Objectives: To determine the relationship between bacterial load and clinical outcomes, assess the stability of bacterial load over time, and test the hypothesis that response to inhaled antibiotics would be predicted by baseline bacterial load. Methods: We performed three studies. Studies 1 and 2 were prospective studies including adults with bronchiectasis. Study 3 was a post hoc analysis of a randomized

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection of Neisseria meningitidis has enabled accurate quantification of the bacterial load in patients with meningococcal disease.
METHODS: Quantification of the N. meningitidis DNA level by real time-PCR was conducted on whole-blood samples obtained from patients presenting with meningococcal disease to hospitals throughout England and Wales over a 3-year period. Levels were correlated with clinical outcome, infecting serogroup, and host factors including, interleukin-1 genotype (IL-1).
RESULTS: Bacterial loads were available for 104

BACKGROUND: Large cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bacterial load in bacterial meningitis (BM) relates to poor outcome. However, the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin seems important to host defense. We studied how cathelicidin concentrations and bacterial load in CSF relate in childhood BM and to what extent they may predict the disease outcome.
METHODS: The patient data originated from a large prospective clinical trial in Latin America in 1996-2003 in which the CSF samples were collected on admission (CSF1) and 12-24 hours later (CSF2). The cathelicidin concentrations were measured by enzyme-lin

Mixed bacterial endometritis poses a therapeutic challenge in mares due to the coexistence of multiple pathogens with divergent antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. This study evaluated the effects of intrauterine ozone insufflation on uterine bacterial load and endometrial inflammatory response in mares with naturally acquired mixed bacterial endometritis. Fifteen mares with mixed bacterial infection were allocated to two treatment groups: a pathological control group receiving pure medical oxygen insufflation (PC; n = 6) and an ozone-treated group receiving 42 µg/mL ozone for three consecu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Treatment monitoring remains a challenge in tuberculosis. The development of the tuberculosis molecular bacterial load assay (TB-MBLA) opens the possibility of real-time treatment monitoring. This review summarizes recent TB-MBLA research and outlines a future research agenda.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies show that TB-MBLA can be applied a wide range of specimens to make a quantitative assessment of the number live M. tuberculosis organisms rapidly. This allows real-time monitoring of treatment response that simplifies patient management and facilitates comparison of dif

BACKGROUND: Sputum and blood eosinophil counts predict corticosteroid effects in COPD patients. Bacterial infection causes increased airway neutrophilic inflammation. The relationship of eosinophil counts with airway bacterial load in COPD patients is uncertain. We tested the hypothesis that bacterial load and eosinophil counts are inversely related.
METHODS: COPD patients were seen at stable state and exacerbation onset. Sputum was processed for quantitative polymerase chain reaction detection of the potentially pathogenic microorganisms (PPM) H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis and S. pneumoniae.

OBJECTIVE: To describe relevant pathogen-related characteristics and their impact on sepsis pathogenesis and prognosis.
DATA SOURCE: Current literature regarding genomic bacterial load and virulence factors, with an emphasis on the impact of these factors on pathophysiology and prognosis of sepsis.
DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: The current paradigm on sepsis pathophysiology and management overlooks aspects concerning the nature and characteristics of the infecting pathogen. Our findings suggest that evaluation of genomic bacterial load might be useful to assess severity and predict prognosi

BACKGROUND: Some authors have reported, using different protocols, that 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) is capable of assessing the intragastric Helicobacter pylori bacterial load, whereas others have not confirmed these data. Our aim is to evaluate the correlation between 13C-UBT values and H. pylori bacterial load.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred ninety-two patients diagnosed H. pylori-positive by rapid urease test, histology, and 13C-UBT were enrolled. H. pylori bacterial load (H. pylori score) and gastritis activity (activity score) were evaluated according to the Updated Sydney System.

OBJECTIVES: Gonococcal infections with a higher bacterial load may pose a higher risk of transmission. We assessed the association between gonococcal bacterial load and coinfection with Mycoplasma genitalium.
METHODS: From September 2015 until May 2018, 200 men and transgender women who have sex with men participated in an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) demonstration trial in Antwerp, Belgium. They underwent 3-monthly 3-site (anus, urine, and pharynx) molecular testing for N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis and M. genitalium, irrespective of symptoms. Gonococcal bacterial load was determi

BACKGROUND: Nasal colonisation with otitis media (OM) pathogens, particularly Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, is a precursor to the onset of OM. Many children experience asymptomatic nasal carriage of these pathogens whereas others will progress to otitis media with effusion (OME) or suppurative OM. We observed a disparity in the prevalence of suppurative OM between Aboriginal children living in remote communities and non-Aboriginal children attending child-care centres; up to 60% and <1%, respectively. This could not be explained by the less dramati

INTRODUCTION: Pneumococcal meningitis, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, is exacerbated by factors released during bacterial lysis, triggering inflammation and damage to host cells. Bacteriolytic antibiotics increase inflammation meaning that there is a high unmet medical need for non-bacteriolytic antimicrobials as alternative therapeutic options. Previously, an 11-amino acid peptide was discovered in the secretome of Klebsiella pneumoniae, named V11A, and was found to inhibit growth of S. pneumoniae in a bacteriostatic and species-specific manner in vitro.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Here it is

Staphylococcus aureus is an ESKAPE pathogen, defined by its ability to evade antibacterial treatment, and together with S. epidermidis is a leading Gram-positive cause of wound infection. The emergence of methicillin- and vancomycin-resistant strains further limits conventional antibiotic treatment. The staphylococcal endolysin LysSte134_1 was produced recombinantly, its proper folding confirmed by zymography, and its lytic activity demonstrated against planktonic cultures of both S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The combination of LysSte134_1 with 10% 1,3-propanediol and Zn2+ increased CFU reduc

Several approved protocols for the prevention of Legionella pneumonia base the type of intervention (to disinfect or not) on the level of contamination found (cfu/L). However, if the level of contamination by Legionella spp. of a water system fluctuates in a short period of time, inadequate sampling could lead to different decisions being made. To determine if there are significant variations in the bacterial count of Legionella spp., water samples were taken at different times from the same sites. Eight wards were selected from a large hospital in Southern Italy and a water sample was taken f

This study was conducted to evaluate the association between pneumococcal DNA load and parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE) in children with community-acquired pneumonia. Bacterial load was quantified and related to the presence of PPE with or without empyema in 72 otherwise healthy children aged ≤5 years who were hospitalised because of radiographically confirmed CAP and showed a real-time polymerase chain reaction that was positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae. The proportion of children with a high bacterial load (i.e. ≥265 DNA copies/mL) was larger among the subjects with PPE than those wi

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is routinely diagnosed by nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), which are unable to distinguish between nucleic acids from viable and non-viable CT organisms.
OBJECTIVES: We applied our recently developed sensitive PCR (viability PCR) technique to measure viable bacterial CT load and explore associated determinants in 524 women attending Dutch sexual health centres (STI clinics), and who had genital or rectal CT.
METHODS: We included women participating in the FemCure study (Netherlands, 2016-2017). At the enrolment visit (pre-treatment), 524 were N

PURPOSE: To examine the magnitude of bacterial load reduction on the surface of the periocular skin 20 minutes after application of a saline hygiene solution containing 0.01% pure hypochlorous acid (HOCl).
METHODS: Microbiological specimens were collected immediately prior to applying the hygiene solution and again 20 minutes later. Total microbial colonies were counted and each unique colony morphology was processed to identify the bacterial species and to determine the susceptibility profile to 15 selected antibiotics.
RESULTS: Specimens were analyzed from the skin samples of 71 eyes from

It has been proposed that small quantities of microbial material within synovial joints may act as a trigger for development of synovitis. We have previously identified an association between intra-articular bacteria and development of inflammatory stifle arthritis and cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in dogs, and now wished to quantify bacterial load and markers of synovitis in dogs with and without stifle arthritis and CCLR. Joint tissues were collected from dogs with CCLR (n=51) and healthy dogs with normal stifles (n=9). Arthritis was assessed radiographically in CCLR dogs. Bacteri
