Bacterial translocation in heat stroke.

The scientific community is fully aware of the importance of heat-related illness and heat stroke syndrome. Numerous guidelines have been recently published and most of them agree on the key role played by the intestine. Likewise, the role of endotoxinemia in the pathophysiology is well established. However, the possibility of bacterial translocation is not mentioned. Our patient illustrates the likelihood of bacterial translocation in heat stroke and consistently the potential need of antibiotic therapy. A 45-year-old man diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia was confined in a penitentiary ce

Bacterial translocation from the intestines.

Bacterial translocation is defined as the passage of viable bacteria from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract through the mucosal epithelium to other sites, such as the mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, liver and blood. This paper reviews results from animal models utilized to obtain information concerning the defense mechanisms operating in the healthy host to confine bacteria to the GI tract. Gnotobiotic and antibiotic-decontaminated mice colonized with particular bacteria demonstrated that the indigenous GI flora maintains an ecologic equilibrium to prevent intestinal bacterial overgrowth and tra

[Bacterial translocation in Crohn disease].

Bacterial translocation is the passage of viable endogenous bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract to mesenteric lymph nodes and other internal organs. The aim of this work was to study bacterial translocation in patients operated on for Crohn's disease. Twenty-eight patients, mean age 29 years, not having received any antibiotics since at least 8 days, presenting with ileal (n = 12), ileo-colonic (n = 14) or colonic (n = 2) Crohn's disease were studied. In 25 out of 28 cases (89%) indication for surgery was strictures inducing an upper small bowel distension in 9 out of 25 patients. Mesente

Bacterial translocation in colorectal cancers.

Bacterial translocation, the passage of viable indigenous bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract to the mesenteric lymph nodes and other internal organs, has been poorly studied in man to date. Pericolonic lymph nodes, liver, portal blood, and peritoneum specimens were harvested before antibiotics were administered during 20 operations for colorectal cancer and compared with those obtained in 20 operations for non colorectal conditions. Bacterial translocation, defined as the presence of intestinal bacteria in at least one of the specimens, was found in 13 patients (65 percent) in the colore

Microbiome and bacterial translocation in cirrhosis.

Qualitative and quantitative changes in gut microbiota play a very important role in cirrhosis. Humans harbour around 100 quintillion gut bacteria, thus representing around 10 times more microbial cells than eukaryotic ones. The gastrointestinal tract is the largest surface area in the body and it is subject to constant exposure to these living microorganisms. The existing symbiosis, proven by the lack of proinflammatory response against commensal bacteria, implies the presence of clearly defined communication lines that contribute to the maintenance of homeostasis of the host. Therefore, alte

[Transplantation of the intestines and bacterial translocation].

Infections, sepsis and multiple organ failure syndrome are associated with high morbidity and mortality in human and experimental small bowel transplantation (SBTx). These complications are attributed to bacterial translocation demonstrated in animal and human studies. Bacterial translocation (BT) is defined as the passage of viable bacteria from the intestinal lumen to other tissues or organs. BT has been associated with different clinical and experimental situations, hemorrhagic shock, trauma, bowel obstruction, immunodepression, total parenteral nutrition, antibiotics. Although BT has been

[Bacterial translocation and its surgical implications].

The passage of viable bacteria through epithelial mucosa into lamina propria and then to mesentheric lymphnodes, and possibly other tissues was defined bacterial translocation (BT) by Berg and Garlington. The transepithelial passage of bacteria out of the intestinal lumen seems to occur in a variety of surgical conditions, and it is suspected to be involved in systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis and multiorgan failure. There is increasing evidence that many nosocomial infections are caused by enteric translocating microorganisms, although the exact incidence of BT in humans is diff

Bacterial translocation markers in liver cirrhosis.

Bacterial translocation (BT) is an important mechanism in the development of infection in liver cirrhosis. The migration and colonization of bacteria and/or bacterial products from the bowel to mesenteric lymph nodes is a controlled process in healthy persons. Increased intestinal permeability, bacterial overgrowth and defect of gut-associated lymphatic tissue promote impaired BT in cirrhotics. We reviewed the reports on markers used for the evaluation of BT published between 1987 and 2016. We focused on the clinical consequences of BT in cirrhosis, as indicated by the values of the BT markers

Bacterial translocation - impact on the adipocyte compartment.

Over the last decade it became broadly recognized that adipokines and thus the fat tissue compartment exert a regulatory function on the immune system. Our own group described the pro-inflammatory function of the adipokine leptin within intestinal inflammation in a variety of animal models. Following-up on this initial work, the aim was to reveal stimuli and mechanisms involved in the activation of the fat tissue compartment and the subsequent release of adipokines and other mediators paralleled by the infiltration of immune cells. This review will summarize the current literature on the possi

Detection of intestinal bacterial translocation using PCR.

Microbial translocation has been suspected to be a major contributing factor in the development of sepsis of unknown origin and multiple organ failure syndrome, but there are currently no tests capable of detecting and quantitating translocation sequentially in humans. The purpose of this study was to develop a sensitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to detect Escherichia coli (E. coli) DNA in the blood of animals after inducing bacterial translocation from the gut. DNA was extracted from blood and primers were used to amplify an 800-bp gene fragment of E. coli by 30-cycle PCR. Detectio

Bacterial Dysbiosis and Translocation in Psoriasis Vulgaris.

Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, associated with both a physical and a psychological burden. Our understanding of the etiology of this disease remains incomplete. Conventionally, psoriasis has been viewed as a condition that manifests solely in the skin. However, the systemic inflammatory nature of this disease has been confirmed by the presence of a wide array of dysregulated cytokines and inflammatory markers in the serum of these patients. Both dysregulated gut and skin microbiomes have been found in association with psoriasis. An evident association also exists

Bacterial translocation in alymphoplasia (aly/aly) mice.

Bacterial translocation (BTL) is defined as the passage of viable bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract to the organs. This study was to elucidate the roles of Peyer's patches (PPs) and/or mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) in BTL. Alymphoplastic mutant mice and phenotypically normal heterozygous micewere dominantly colonized with streptomycin-resistant Escherichia coli and BTL was examined. In PP- and MLN-competent mice, BTL to MLNs was detected in 100% of mice, but BTL to organs was rare (25%). On the other hand, in PP- and MLN-deficientmice, BTL to organs was detected in 91% of mice. The resu

Does noncomplicated acute appendicitis cause bacterial translocation?

It is unknown whether noncomplicated acute appendicitis cause bacterial translocation. In this study, we aimed to test development of the bacterial translocation in the patients who were operated for acute appendicitis. In this prospective study, 10 control patients who underwent elective operations because of other reasons, and 18 patients with noncomplicated acute appendicitis were evaluated. No patients took prophylactic antibiotic. After laparotomy, samples were obtained from peritoneal leaf just close to wound edge, and peritoneal swab culture from right paracolic region. Before appendect

Obstructive jaundice promotes bacterial translocation in humans.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Significant bacterial translocation was demonstrated following experimental biliary obstruction, however very little is known about the importance and the prevalence of gut-origin sepsis in obstructive jaundice patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the concept of gut-origin sepsis in obstructive jaundiced patients and its clinical importance. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-one patients requiring laparotomy for obstructive jaundice (group I) and thirty patients operated on electively mainly for chronic cholecystitis (group II) were studied. Peritoneal swab, mesent

Hypoxia-induced bacterial translocation in the puppy.

Because hypoxia is one of the most common major stresses to which a neonate is exposed, we postulated that it alone might be the cause of intestinal bacterial translocation, which could be the underlying etiology of neonatal sepsis. An animal model, in which hypoxia is the sole stress, was developed in our laboratory and tested in 18 puppies to determine the effect of hypoxia and reoxygenation on intestinal bacterial translocation. In group I (n = 8), following laparotomy and cannulation of the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), the FIO2 was decreased from 21% to 9% for 90 minutes followed by reo

Markers of immunity and bacterial translocation in cirrhosis.

Bacterial translocation (BT), the migration of enteric bacteria to extraintestinal sites, is related to immune stimulation and haemodynamic changes in experimental cirrhosis. These changes may be highly relevant to patients with cirrhosis, where changes in the circulation cause serious complications. The optimal surrogate marker of BT in patients with cirrhosis, however, is a matter of controversy. In the first study, we investigated the relationship between markers of inflammation, haemodynamics and prognosis in 45 patients and 12 controls. We found high-sensitive C-reactive protein to be cor

Effect of alcohol on bacterial translocation in rats.

Bacterial translocation has been proposed to be important in the pathophysiology of sepsis, as well as to be a consequence of sepsis. To study the effect of alcohol on bacterial translocation from the gut, normal Sprague-Dawley rats were administered alcohol by gavage by two regimens: Acute (3.7 g/kg, one dose) or Subacute (1 of 2 doses, 2.4 or 3.7 g/kg/day once daily for 14 days). Mesenteric lymph node cultures were performed, and portal venous blood was assayed for endotoxin. Ileal and cecal permeability studies were performed in the Acute and Subacute groups using fluorescein isothiocyanate
