Material from 50 patients with purulent otitis media was investigated. All patients had undergone surgical operation. The results indicate that anaerobic non spore-forming bacteria, especially gram-negative rods of the family Bacteroidaceae, may play an important role in the aetiology of purulent otitis media. In a further study, the pathogenicity of the isolated bacteria was investigated. For this purpose, guinea pigs were challenged by intramuscular injection of the organism. All of the isolated strains were sensitive to clindamycin.

Members of Bacteroidaceae family are the most commonly isolated anaerobic pathogens in humans. This study summarises our experience of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of these anaerobes from diverse clinical infections in a tertiary care hospital. Over a period of 5 years, 611 samples were received for anaerobic culture. Of these, 53 specimens yielded 62 anaerobic isolates. Thirty of the 62 isolates (48.4%) belonged to Bacteroidacea family obtained from 29 patients. They comprised of 14 (14/32; 43.7%) Prevotella spp., 13 (13/32; 40.6%) Bacteroides spp., 3 (3/32; 9.3%) Porphy

The isolated and characterized gut phages remain rare. Most of the gut phages that have been isolated and propagated thus far are lytic phages, leaving significant gaps in the study of gut temperate phages. In this study, we successfully isolated a large-scale collection of gut bacteria and phages, containing 1,679 bacterial strains from 86 species and 79 phages that infect bacteria from 26 different species. Among the phage isolates, 32 are temperate phages and two of these temperate phages were directly isolated from faecal samples of healthy human donors. Sequence comparisons and analysis s

The gastrointestinal tract is rich in metabolic, immune, and microbiome-derived signals that can inform the design of live biotherapeutics and diagnosis of intestinal disorders. Engineered cell-based biosensors can tap into this molecular information and report on their environment, yet their development in gut-resident symbionts has been limited by a lack of validated sensor systems. Here, we present a generalizable pipeline that leverages bacterial transcriptional profiling to identify environment-responsive systems for biosensor engineering. Candidate Sensors Systems (CSSs) mined from healt

Antibiotics are essential to modern medicine, but their broad-spectrum activity can unintentionally disrupt the gut microbiota. This collateral damage may be alleviated by antagonistic drug interactions, in which specific compounds used in combination therapies selectively protect beneficial gut microbes from antibiotic activity. Using efflux pump inhibitors, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, and targeted gene deletions, we show that a variety of non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals-from diverse therapeutic classes and at sub-inhibitory concentrations-can protect multiple Bacteroidales species

The intestinal microbiota is associated with the development of benzene-induced hematopoietic toxicity. Modulation of intestinal homeostasis by probiotic supplementation has been considered an effective strategy to prevent adverse health effects. However, the role and mechanism of probiotics in benzene-induced hematopoietic toxicity are unclear. After 45 days of exposure, benzene caused bone marrow hematopoietic toxicity in mice. Furthermore, we found that benzene altered the intestinal barrier in mice, leading to an increase in the abundance of Bacteroidaceae and the activation of systemic in

The opportunistic pathogen Escherichia coli, a common member of the human gut microbiota belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, is the causative agent of the majority of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The gut microbiota serves as a reservoir for uropathogenic E. coli where they are shed in feces, colonize the periurethral area, and infect the urinary tract. Currently, front line treatment for UTIs consists of oral antibiotics, but the rise of antibiotic resistance is leading to higher rates of recurrence, and antibiotics cause collateral damage to other members of the gut microbiota. It

Previous studies have shown high acquisition risks of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) among international travelers visiting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) hotspots. Although antibiotic use and travelers' diarrhea have shown to influence the ESBL-E acquisition risk, it remains largely unknown whether successful colonization of ESBL-E during travel is associated with the composition, functional capacity and resilience of the traveler's microbiome. The microbiome of pre- and post-travel fecal samples from 190 international travelers visiting Africa or Asia

With the aim of investigating the seasonal occurrence of Actinomyces pyogenes, Peptostreptococcus indolicus, Bacteroides melaninogenicus ss. levii and Fusobacterium necrophorum, and thus the potential for development of summer mastitis, clinically healthy Danish Holstein-Friesian heifers due to calve in the autumn were sampled from the teat tip, the conjunctiva and the oral cavity at 2-6 week intervals from 1979 to 1981. The overall isolation rates of F. necrophorum, P. indolicus and B. melaninogenicus ss. levii, in order of significance, were significantly higher during the pasture period whe

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota is established during infancy and plays a fundamental role in shaping host immunity. Colonization patterns may influence the development of atopic disease, but existing evidence is limited and conflicting.
OBJECTIVE: To explore associations of infant gut microbiota and food sensitization.
METHODS: Food sensitization at 1 year was determined by skin prick testing in 166 infants from the population-based Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study. Faecal samples were collected at 3 and 12 months, and microbiota was characterized by Illumina 16

Bacteroidaceae are common gut microbiota members in all warm-blooded animals. However, if Bacteroidaceae are to be used as probiotics, the species selected for different hosts should reflect the natural distribution. In this study, we therefore evaluated host adaptation of bacterial species belonging to the family Bacteroidaceae. B. dorei, B. uniformis, B. xylanisolvens, B. ovatus, B. clarus, B. thetaiotaomicron and B. vulgatus represented human-adapted species while B. gallinaceum, B. caecigallinarum, B. mediterraneensis, B. caecicola, M. massiliensis, B. plebeius and B. coprocola were common

To evaluate the role of atmosphere of incubation in the detection of clinically important bacteremia and fungemia in adults, we compared the yield of microorganisms from 10,541 paired 5-ml samples of blood incubated aerobically and anaerobically. The medium, supplemented peptone broth (SPB) with 0.03% sodium polyanetholesulfonate, and the ratio of blood to broth (1:10) were the same for all cultures. Only cultures with adequate blood samples (greater than or equal to 80% of stated volume) were compared statistically. More fungi (P less than 10(-7) ) grew in continuously vented bottles of SPB.

Two liquid blood culture media, Tryptic soy broth (TSB) and Thiol broth, containing sodium polyanetholsulfonate were compared in 8,654 cultures. Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium (including Propionibacterium) were isolated significantly more frequently (P < 0.001) from TSB than from Thiol. Escherichia coli, Haemophilus, and Bacteroidaceae were isolated more frequently in TSB; however, the differences were not statistically significant. In no instance was Thiol superior to TSB in detecting bacteremia. In an additional 2,977 cultures, aerobic and anaerobic Vacutainer culture tubes with supplemente

Healthy human gut microbiota is dominated by Bacteroidaceae in industrialized populations and by Prevotellaceae in those with traditional lifestyles, but diet alone is insufficient to explain this dominance of different Bacteroidota. Here we screened 94 dietary components in synthetic gut communities and find that these two bacterial families compete for overlapping nutritional niches. Segatella copri, a key member of Prevotellaceae-rich communities, outcompeted Bacteroidaceae when preferred polysaccharides such as arabinan were available, but this advantage depended on community composition,

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Few studies, even those with cohort designs, test the mediating effects of infant gut microbes and metabolites on the onset of disease. We undertook such a study.
METHODS: Using structural equation modeling path analysis, we tested directional relationships between first pregnancy, birth mode, prolonged labor and breastfeeding; infant gut microbiota, metabolites, and IgA; and childhood body mass index and atopy in 1667 infants.
RESULTS: After both cesarean birth and prolonged labor with a first pregnancy, a higher Enterobacteriaceae/Bacteroidaceae ratio at 3 months was the

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure has been linked to type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction in humans. Animal studies suggest that air pollutants may alter the composition of the gut microbiota, which may negatively impact metabolic health through changes in the composition and/or function of the gut microbiome.
OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine whether elevated TRAP exposure was correlated with gut bacterial taxa in overweight and obese adolescents from the Meta-AIR (Metabolic and Asthma Incidence Research) study. The secondary aim was to e

This study was aimed at investigating the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of a polysaccharide (RTFP) isolated from Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit on type-2 diabetic db/db mice. The results indicated that the oral administration of RTFP could significantly decrease the body weight, fat, and liver hypertrophy and the levels of fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and serum lipids of the db/db mice. Histopathological observation showed that RTFP could effectively protect the pancreas, liver, and epididymal fat against damage and dysfunction. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction a
