Bacteraemia with Leptotrichia buccalis: report of a case and review of the literature.

We report here on a new case of L. buccalis bacteraemia. To our knowledge 16 other cases of L. buccalis bacteraemia have been reported in the literature, most of them in neutropenic patients. However L buccalis endocarditis does occasionally occur in non-neutropenic patients. The identification of L. buccalis is based on well known phenotypic features and confirmed by the detection of a large peak of lactic acid by gas chromatography for non volatile organic acids. L. buccalis is sensitive to a wide range of antibiotics including beta-lactam antibiotics, but it is resistant to aminoglycosides

Clinical spectrum of bacteroidaceae in a tertiary care hospital.

Members of Bacteroidaceae family are the most commonly isolated anaerobic pathogens in humans. This study summarises our experience of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of these anaerobes from diverse clinical infections in a tertiary care hospital. Over a period of 5 years, 611 samples were received for anaerobic culture. Of these, 53 specimens yielded 62 anaerobic isolates. Thirty of the 62 isolates (48.4%) belonged to Bacteroidacea family obtained from 29 patients. They comprised of 14 (14/32; 43.7%) Prevotella spp., 13 (13/32; 40.6%) Bacteroides spp., 3 (3/32; 9.3%) Porphy

Amino acid profiles, amino acid sensors and transporters expression and intestinal microbiota are differentially altered in goats infected with Haemonchus contortus.

Infection with the nematode Haemonchus contortus causes host malnutrition and gastrointestinal injuries. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of H. contortus infection on gastrointestinal contents of free amino acids (AA), the expression of AA transporters and microbiota with a focus on amino acid metabolism. Twenty-four Xiangdong black goats (13 ± 1.5 kg, 6 months old) were randomly assigned into the control group (n = 8) and the infected group (n = 16). The results showed that H. contortus infection increased (P < 0.05) the free AA contents in jejunum and ileum digesta.

The importance of black-pigmented gram-negative anaerobes in human infections.

Black-pigmented Gram-negative anaerobic rods are found on mucosal surfaces as indigenous flora. With mucosal damage due to disease, trauma or surgery, these organisms may invade tissues and set up infection. Other important factors determining whether or not infection results include 'inoculum' size, synergy with other organisms and production of virulence factors that include capsules, lipopolysaccharide, attachment factors, proteases, collagenase, neuraminidase, and phospholipase A; also, they may have fibrinolytic and anti-phagocytic activity and may degrade complement and IgG and IgM. Cranberry extracts promote growth of Bacteroidaceae and decrease abundance of Enterobacteriaceae in a human gut simulator model.

The opportunistic pathogen Escherichia coli, a common member of the human gut microbiota belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family, is the causative agent of the majority of urinary tract infections (UTIs). The gut microbiota serves as a reservoir for uropathogenic E. coli where they are shed in feces, colonize the periurethral area, and infect the urinary tract. Currently, front line treatment for UTIs consists of oral antibiotics, but the rise of antibiotic resistance is leading to higher rates of recurrence, and antibiotics cause collateral damage to other members of the gut microbiota. [Promotion of Porphyromonas gingivalis to viral disease].

Chronic periodontitis is one of the most common oral diseases in humans, the main recognized pathogenic bac-terium of which is the Porphyromonas gingivalis. Various types of viruses have been detected in periodontal disease in situ, and the joint action of viral and bacterial pathogens infection mechanism are complicated. Porphyromonas gingivalis has the characteristics resulting from the interaction with a variety of bacterium viruses, which may be the reason for chronic perio-dontitis being a protracted disease associated with a variety of systemic diseases. In this paper, we reviewed the re

Non-oral Prevotella stepping into the spotlight.

Species now affiliated to genus Prevotella have been known for decades as an integral part of human oral cavity microbiota. They were frequently isolated from patients with periodontitis or from dental root canals but also from healthy subjects. With the exception of Prevotella intermedia, they were considered opportunistic pathogens, as they were isolated also from various bacterial abscesses from the head, neck, breast, skin and various other body sites. Consequently, Prevotella were not in the focus of research activities. On the other hand, the four species found in the rumen never caused

Serious infection with Leptotrichia buccalis. Report of a case and review of the literature.

Leptotrichia buccalis is an obligately anaerobic, gram-negative rod classified as a member of the family Bacteroidaceae. Organisms found in this family (Bacteroides and Fusobacteria) are frequent causes of severe infection in human beings. L. buccalis is a constituent of normal oral flora. Leptotrichia has rarely been recovered from mixed infections primarily of the head and neck. It has not previously been reported as a cause of serious infection in man. We report a case of cavitary pneumonia and septicemia caused by L. buccalis. The colonial morphology and gram stain of L. buccalis are chara

[Oral infection and rheumatic diseases].

Periodontitis (PD) is one of the most common infectious diseases of dental attachment. From epidemiological studies there is known association of periodontitis with chronic diseases as for example diabetes mellitus, cardiovacular diseases, atherosclerosis or Crohn disease. In last decade there is an increasing evidence for association of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontitis also. RA and PD have some common genetic, environmental and immunopathological characters. Important aspect of reciprocal relationship is also ability to citrullination, which is innate to one of most important oral

Feasibility and therapeutic strategies of vaccines against Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease that is highly prevalent worldwide and is characterized by inflammation of the gums, and loss of connective tissue and bone support. The Gram-negative anerobic bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis is generally accepted as the main etiological agent for chronic periodontitis. The objective of this paper is to elucidate the feasibility of achieving protection against periodontitis though immunization against P. gingivalis. Until now, animal studies have showed no complete protection against P. gingivalis. However, current knowledge about P. gingivalis

Current research progress on Prevotella intermedia and associated diseases.

Prevotella intermedia is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that is a common pathogen of periodontitis. Recent studies have revealed that P. intermedia is closely associated with a variety of diseases involving multiple systems. Under the action of its virulence factors such as cysteine protease and adhesins, P. intermedia has the ability to bind and invade various host cells including gingival fibroblasts. It can also copolymerize a variety of pathogenic bacteria, leading to interference with the host's immune inflammatory response and causing various diseases. In this article, we review the

Heme acquisition mechanisms of Porphyromonas gingivalis - strategies used in a polymicrobial community in a heme-limited host environment.

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a main etiologic agent and key pathogen responsible for initiation and progression of chronic periodontitis requires heme as a source of iron and protoporphyrin IX for its survival and the ability to establish an infection. Porphyromonas gingivalis is able to accumulate a defensive cell-surface heme-containing pigment in the form of μ-oxo bisheme. The main sources of heme for P. gingivalis in vivo are hemoproteins present in saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and erythrocytes. To acquire heme, P. gingivalis uses several mechanisms. Among them, the best characterized a

Integrated analysis of human-mouse gut microbiota in RSV infection based on machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in children, but effective treatment options remain limited. The gut-lung axis, which highlights the role of gut microbiota in regulating respiratory immunity, provides new opportunities for developing probiotic-based therapies. However, existing studies on RSV-associated gut microbiota are often small-scale and lack systematic integration. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive machine learning-based analysis of gut microbiota data from RSV-infected children and mice, integrating
