Association of Bacteroides forsythus and a novel Bacteroides phylotype with periodontitis.

Chronic periodontitis is a common infectious disease in the adult population. The etiology is clearly bacterial, and a small number of bacterial species have been consistently associated with periodontitis, including Bacteroides forsythus and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Comparatively little attention has been paid to the identification of health-associated and potentially beneficial bacterial species that may reside in the gingival sulcus. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship of the presence of B. forsythus and a newly identified Bacteroides phylotype, oral clone BU06

Effects of estradiol and progesterone on Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Bacteroides gingivalis.

Bacteroides melaninogenicus subsp. intermedius increases in the subgingival microflora during pregnancy. These studies evaluated direct interactions between hormonal steroids and oral Bacteroides species. Resting cell suspensions of pure cultures of plaque organisms were incubated anaerobically with [14C]estradiol and [14C]progesterone. Uptake of labeled compound per microgram of bacterial protein was determined by thin-layer chromatography and liquid scintillation counting. B. melaninogenicus subsp. intermedius and B. melaninogenicus subsp. melaninogenicus took up 2.6 x 10(-4) to 5.4 x 10(-4)

Bacteroides barnesiae sp. nov., Bacteroides salanitronis sp. nov. and Bacteroides gallinarum sp. nov., isolated from chicken caecum.

Eight bacterial strains isolated from the caecum of chicken, BL2(T), BL66, EG3, EG6, M27, BL78(T), C35(T) and C43, were characterized by determining their phenotypic characteristics, cellular fatty acid profiles, menaquinone profiles and phylogenetic positions based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that these isolates belonged to the genus Bacteroides. One group of five strains (BL2(T), BL66, EG3, EG6 and M27) was related most closely to Bacteroides coprocola JCM 12979(T), with approximately 93 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, and to Bacteroides pl

Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis.

Bacteroides fragilis is a minor component of the microbial flora of the intestine but the most frequent disease--causing anaerobe. Virulence characteristics are its capsule, which induces abscess formation, and the production of fragilysin, a Zn-metalloprotease. This toxin's action is to hydrolyze the extracellular domain of E-cadherin, the effect of which is to disrupt intercellular adhesion and thus increase permeability of the epithelium, causing intracellular redistribution of actin with morphologic changes to the cells and release of beta-catenin, which translocates to the nucleus and ult

Bacteroides ureolyticus (NTU) medium for the selective recovery of Bacteroides gracilis.

Bacteroides gracilis is a gram-negative anaerobic bacillus which requires formate and fumarate for growth; it has been implicated in periodontal disease and serious infections of the head and neck. In this study, Bacteroides ureolyticus (NTU) medium was tested for its ability to allow the growth of B. gracilis and other formate-fumarate requiring gram-negative anaerobes and to enable the recovery of these organisms from clinical specimens. All reference strains grew on NTU medium with the exception of Wolinella recta and formate-fumarate requiring organisms were isolated from 18 of 20 samples

Antimicrobial effect of fluorides on Bacteroides melaninogenicus subspecies and Bacteroides asaccharolyticus.

This study was undertaken to determine whether the suspected periodontopathogens Bacteroides melaninogenicus ss melaninogenicus and intermedius and Bacteroides asaccharolyticus are killed by clinically used topical fluorides. The viability of each organism was examined after exposure to three fluoride compounds, stannous (SnF2), acidulated phosphate (APF), and neutral sodium (NaF), for 1 and 8 h. Stannous fluoride was found to be effective at lowest fluoride concentrations with APF next in effectiveness. NaF required the highest concentrations of fluoride to kill test organisms. Longer exposur

[Bacteroides distasonis meningitis].

A 50 year old woman while undergoing severe treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, developed anaerobic meningitis. The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample was transported and cultivated aerobically and anaerobically. After 48 h at 37 degrees C the anaerobically incubated plate, the enriched fluid thioglycollate medium and the anaerobic culture medium yielded luxuriant growth of an anaerobic Gram negative bacillum. The biochemical and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were consistent with those for Bacteroides distasonis. Most of the strains of the 5 species included in the Bacteroides fragilis g

Bacteroides gingivalis, Bacteroides intermedius and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in human periodontal diseases.

Bacteroides gingivalis, Bacteroides intermedius and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans seem to be major pathogens in advancing periodontitis in man. First, these organisms are recovered in higher prevalence and proportions from progressive periodontitis lesions than from quiescent periodontal sites. Second, antibody levels against B. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans are markedly elevated in serum and gingival crevice fluid of periodontitis patients compared to normal controls. Third, B. gingivalis and B. intermedius elaborate potent proteases and A. actinomycetemcomitans various noxio

Bacteroides infections in children.

From 1974 to 1990, 336 Bacteroides isolates were obtained from 312 specimens from 274 patients. They comprised 180 (54%) B. fragilis isolates, 55 (16%) B. theta-iotaomicron, 36 (11%) B. vulgatus, 34 (10%) B. distasonis, 21 (6%) B. ovatus and 10 (3%) B. uniformis. Infections in 253 (92%) patients were polymicrobial, but in 21 (8%) children, a Bacteroides sp. was isolated in pure culture. Most Bacteroides isolates were from peritoneal fluid (114), abscesses (110), wound infections (20), blood cultures (10) and from patients with pneumonia (14) or chronic otitis media (8). beta-lactamases in bacteroides.

Bacteroides fragilis is responsible for most anaerobic infections in man. Most isolates of B. fragilis show resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. This resistance might be due to beta-lactamase production or permeability barrier in the cell wall. B. fragilis produce beta-lactamase with mainly cephalosporinase activity. Other Bacteroides species such as B. clostridiformis, B. melaninogenicus and B. oralis also produce beta-lactamase but with different biochemical characteristics.

Significance of encapsulated Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Bacteroides fragilis groups in mixed infections.

Organisms of the Bacteroides melaninogenicus and Bacteroides fragilis groups are often found mixed with facultatively anaerobic organisms in infections. The relative importance of these Bacteroides groups and facultative anaerobic pathogens in mixed infections was investigated in a subcutaneous abscess model in mice. This was determined by observing the effect of antimicrobial therapy directed against one or both organisms present in the abscess. Clindamycin or metronidazole was used for treatment of infections caused by Bacteroides species, and either gentamicin, penicillin, ampicillin, or ox

A not too Fragile Bacteroides.

We present a rare case of Bacteroides fragilis vertebral osteomyelitis, in a 20-year-old female with no underlying medical conditions. She presented with a three-week history of lower back pain, myalgias, rigors, and night sweats. The patient was febrile and tachycardic, with borderline low blood pressures. Her initial labs showed elevated inflammatory markers with no leukocytosis. MRI of the thoracic and lumbar spine demonstrated T12/L1 discitis/osteomyelitis with phlegmonous changes and concerns for epidural abscess, causing mild to moderate spinal stenosis. Bacteroides fragilis grew in an a

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Bacteroides species by disk diffusion: The NordicAST Bacteroides study.

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of anaerobic bacteria has until recently been done by MIC methods. We have carried out a multi-centre evaluation of the newly validated EUCAST disk diffusion method for AST of Bacteroides spp. METHODS: A panel of 30 Bacteroides strains was assembled based on reference agar dilution MICs, resistance gene detection and quantification of cfiA carbapenemase gene expression. Nordic clinical microbiology laboratories (n = 45) performed disk diffusion on Fastidious Anaerobe Agar with 5% mechanically defibrinated horse blood (FAA-HB) for piperaci

[The first metronidazole-resistant Bacteroides species isolated at Marmara University Hospital: Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron].

Bacteroides species, the predominant constituents of the human intestinal microbiota can cause serious intraabdominal and postoperative wound infections and bacteremia. Moreover, these bacteria are more resistant to antimicrobial agents than the other anaerobes. The limited number of the antimicrobials, such as carbapenems, beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitors and nitroimidazoles are highly effective in eliminating Bacteroides. However, a few metronidazole-resistant isolates have been reported from several countries recently. The nim genes (nim A-G) are suggested to be responsible for the maj

Bacteroides fragilis: an exogenous pathogen?

Thirteen strains of Bacteroides fragilis isolated from contaminated water or from cases of intestinal and non-intestinal infections were comparatively analyzed in order to detect a possible biological relationship among them. The observation of similar profiles among the two groups, regarding the capacity of inducing abscesses and some surface properties, may support the hypothesis that the species could also act as an exogenous pathogen.

Cefoxitin inactivation by Bacteroides fragilis.

We have surveyed the susceptibility of 1,575 clinical isolates of the Bacteroides fragilis group of organisms to cefoxitin and eight other antimicrobial agents. Eleven isolates, 0.7% of the total, were highly cefoxitin resistant and had minimum inhibitory concentrations of greater than or equal to 64 micrograms/ml. These isolates were also resistant to other beta-lactam antibiotics. Of 11 isolates, 4 were able to inactivate cefoxitin in broth cultures, as measured by microbiological and high-pressure liquid chromatography assays. Two distinct patterns of cefoxitin breakdown products were detec

Bacteroides meningitis complicating chronic mastoiditis.

A 70-year-old man with a history of chronic middle and external ear suppuration presenting with acute meningitis due to Bacteroides uniformis is described. Anaerobic organisms including Bacteroides species were cultured from the affected external auditory meatus. Administration of metronidazole led to complete clinical recovery and a cholesteatoma was subsequently surgically evacuated. Chronic suppuration in the middle ear and paranasal sinuses is the commonest primary cause of cerebral abscess and in this setting meningitis is associated with a particularly high mortality. Effect of Bacteroides on Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (CD), also known as cicatrizing enteritis, is an inflammatory bowel disease that occurs in the distal ileum and right colon of unknown cause and is also called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with ulcerative colitis (UC). In recent years, intestinal biota have been confirmed to play a significant role in various gastrointestinal diseases. Studies have found that intestinal microbiota disorders are closely associated with the onset and progression of Crohn's disease. Bacteroidetes, the second largest microbiota in the intestine, are crucial for equilibrium in the microbiota and
