A study was done to measure baseline levels of immunity to diphtheria and antibody responses to different doses of diphtheria vaccine in study participants in the three Baltic states. Diphtheria booster vaccines containing either 3 (Estonia and Lithuania), 6 (Latvia), or 12 (Latvia) limit of flocculation units of diphtheria toxoid were administered to 2315 adults. Diphtheria antibody levels were tested before and 1-2 months after vaccination. Before vaccination, 40% of the participants in Estonia, 32% in Lithuania, and 38% in Latvia had antibody levels <0.01 IU/mL, the level for minimum protec

Rabies is a fatal zoonosis that still causes nearly 70, 000 human deaths every year. In Europe, the oral rabies vaccination (ORV) of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) was developed in the late 1970s and has demonstrated its effectiveness in the eradication of the disease in Western and some Central European countries. Following the accession of the three Baltic countries--Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania--to the European Union in 2004, subsequent financial support has allowed the implementation of regular ORV campaigns since 2005-2006. This paper reviews ten years of surveillance efforts and ORV campaign

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare, potentially life-threatening disorder characterised by recurrent episodes of localised oedema caused by bradykinin overproduction. Accurate epidemiological data are essential for optimising diagnosis and treatment, particularly in underrepresented regions such as the Baltic states. This study aimed to examine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, genetic variants, and treatment accessibility for patients with HAE in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
METHODS: This retrospective study included HAE patients diagnosed accor

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms, alongside non-motor manifestations. In advanced stages, people with PD (PwP) require extensive support to maintain mobility and quality of life, creating substantial demand on healthcare and reimbursement systems. Reported prevalence varies across Europe, with Germany at 350 per 100,000, Estonia at 314 per 100,000, Lithuania at 265 per 100,000, and Latvia at 217 per 100,000. This study applies a structured, qualitative comparative policy mapping approach (a subtype of comparative policy analys

BACKGROUND: The problem of underestimating the burden of mental health-related mortality is widely discussed in the public health literature. Relevant scientific evidence from societies experiencing the largest burden of mental health mortality is important for better understanding global and national mental health challenges and improving policies. Three Baltic States - Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia - are countries in the Central and Eastern European region that experienced post-soviet transition trauma and showed among the highest suicide and alcohol-related mortality rates in Europe. This

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cancer mortality rates in the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) exceeds the European Union (EU) average, in part due to limited access to radiation therapy (RT). We updated RT capacity and utilization to inform regional planning. Patient/material and methods: We conducted a census of all 11 RT centres (2016-2023) via a standardized questionnaire, cross-validated with national registries and international databases. We compared technology availability, workforce, and utilization with EU countries in relation to the present cancer burden and projections to 20

BACKGROUND: In the 20 years since the three Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, have been independent, they have converged progressively with a Western neighbours, politically economically and socially. In contrast, the health gap has widened.
METHODS: Trends in life expectancy in the three Baltic States were compared with Finland and were decomposed by age for the years 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009 and by cause of death for year 2009. 1994 was when life expectancy fell to its lowest level since the three countries regained independence.
RESULTS: From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, t

This paper presents preliminary results in our investigations of the biological (abiotic and biotic) and non-biological causes of the spatial heterogeneity and temporal change of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), both within and between Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Spatial analysis revealed that the land cover and precise seasonal patterns of climatic indices (temperature and normalized difference vegetation index) can explain 55% of the observed spatial variation in TBE incidence over the period 1993-98 across all the Baltic States. Temporal analysis of climatic variables indicates a very spe

The paper deals with predicting carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide emissions generated by power production sector in the Baltic States in period up to year 2020. The economies of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are rapidly growing therefore forecast of emissions related with this occurrence becomes very important. The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), one of the largest in the world, is situated in the region. Two power production scenarios are modelled to investigate changes in power sector's emissions expected as the consequences of the coming closure of Ignalina NPP. Power market was assum

The transmission and occurrence of Trichinella spp according to the zoogeography of different climatic conditions, socioeconomy and human activity are discussed. Comparing arctic, subarctic and temperate regions, it appears that the species of Trichinella present, the composition of the fauna and the human activity are all very important interacting factors affecting epidemiology. In Greenland, where only sylvatic trichinellosis is present, the high prevalence in wildlife appears closely connected with polar bear hunting. In the Scandinavian countries, the prevalence of both sylvatic and domes

Depression in later life is a pressing public health concern that is often comorbid with chronic illness and associated with substantial declines in psychological well-being. Drawing on the dual continua model of mental health, this study investigated the longitudinal, bidirectional associations between psychological well-being and depressive symptoms among older adults in the Baltic States. Using two waves of data (2019/2020 and 2021/2022) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), we analyzed responses from 5,874 individuals aged 50 and above in Estonia, Latvia, and

INTRODUCTION: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a severe side effect of antiresorptive or antiangiogenic therapy that manifests as an exposed bone, accompanied by clinical signs of infection, persisting for more than 8 weeks, without history of radiation therapy or metastases to the jaws. The aim of the study was to present first MRONJ cases in Lithuania and review trends in the modern research literature on the subject.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patient charts with a diagnosis of "Inflammatory conditions of the jaws" treated in Vilnius Universit

Despite evidence that socio-economic factors associated with political transition played a major causal role in the abrupt upsurge in tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in the newly independent Baltic States, doubts are still repeatedly expressed about the importance of these factors relative to changes in public health practices that may have affected merely the registration of cases. In response to these doubts, evidence of relevant practices of surveillance, registration, diagnosis, awareness and immunization is presented as taken from archived data and interviews with experienced medical practi

Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic parasite that infects a wide spectrum of mammals. Moreover, its presence in wild carnivores is indicative of environmental contamination by the parasite. A total of 186 marten (152 pine marten; 34 stone marten) meat juice samples from Latvia and Lithuania were tested for T. gondii seroprevalence. Samples were tested for T. gondii specific antibodies by a commercial ELISA and antibodies were found in 121 (65.1%) samples. Higher prevalence (67.8%) occurred in pine martens compared to that of stone martens (52.9%). Adult pine martens had a 2.0 (95% CI 0.

Here we describe two new fossil species and one new genus of pseudoscorpions, found in the late Eocene Baltic amber. Baltochthonius andrushchenkoi gen. et sp. nov. and Heterolophus eridanus sp. nov. are assigned to the subfamily Tridenchthoniinae (Pseudoscorpiones: Chthoniidae). We present an updated diagnostic key for the tribes, genera and subgenera of Tridenchthoniinae. The biogeographic, paleohabitat and ecological features of new species are presented and compared to the related extinct and extant species of the subfamily Tridenchthoniinae.

In the Baltic countries, the two zoonotic diseases, alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, and cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by Echinococcus granulosus, are of increasing public health concern. Observations from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania indicate that the distribution of both parasites is wider in the Baltics than previously expected. In this paper, we review and discuss the available data, regarding both parasitoses in animals and humans, from the Baltic countries and selected adjacent regions. The data are not easily comparable but reveal a worrisome situ

Two new species of soldier beetles (Coleoptera, Cantharidae) from the Priabonian deposits in Yantarny, Russia (Baltic amber) are described. Cantharis crisantha sp. nov. is characterized by its relatively small body size, laterally rounded prothorax, and simple claws with a small basal tooth. Of particular interest, this specimen has its aedeagus extruded-a feature described for the first time in a representative of the genus Cantharis found in amber, and something rarely seen in all known fossil species of the Cantharidae family. The second described species, Cantharis raeorum sp. nov., is cha
