PURPOSE: From the eleventh to the thirteenth century, three major events marked surgery in France: the appearance of an epidemic linked to ergotism which led to numerous amputations, the emergence of barber surgeons for civilian practice, and the organization of war surgery for the First Crusade.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: If a certain separation between medicine and surgery had appeared at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it would have been from 1215 (at the time of the Lateran Council) that the real separation between medicine and surgery was made. Before this date, the surgery was done by the

The progress of dentistry towards a profession allied to medicine and surgery was incremental, and a most important step in that process was the separation of the surgeons from the barbers in 1745. Hogarth's illustration of a dentally active barber has been discussed previously in the British Dental Journal. In this paper, his probable contribution to the campaign for separation led successfully by his friend, surgeon John Ranby FRS (1703-1773), through the dramatic and much analysed painting The death of the countess (1743), is analysed. In this paper, it is suggested that William Hogarth was

Barber-surgeons have existed as a medical profession in multiple countries for centuries. This article outlines the exciting history of the barber-surgeons in Finland, focusing on a time frame covering over 600 years, from the Middle Ages until the last barber-surgeon in Finland finished his practice during the Second World War. The barber-surgeons were the first healthcare professionals who focused on the healthcare of soldiers during times of both peace and war. They were able to treat wounds, conduct minor and even major surgeries and perform amputations. The development of the profession a

For six centuries the barbers of Europe practiced surgery. In 1215 a papal edict forbade members of the clergy (physicians) from performing surgical procedures as contact with blood was felt to be contaminating to men of the church. Bloodletting and minor surgery was now turned over to the barber-surgeons and this was in agreement with the medical doctors who felt that these procedures were beneath their dignity. The barber-surgeons were sometimes called "doctors of the short robe" to distinguish them from the medical doctors and surgeons who were called "doctors of the long robe", although un

Surgery and medicine have not evolved in parallel. There have been discrepancies, bellicosity, contempt and even separate university studies during a long time. The Saint Cosme Brotherhood, founded to supervise the professional practice of barbers (short robe surgeon-barbers) in France in 1260, was opposed by the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. The conflicting interests of the university, Brotherhood and Barbers, that persisted until the 18 th century, impaired the progress of surgery. In the first half of the 19 th century, the advance of surgery continued facing pain, hemorrhage and infection.

Johann Gregor Gutturff was a plague barber in the Dresden epidemic of 1680, and important records of his life and work have survived. Largely ignored by plague research, the source material provides detailed insight into the quasi-medical work and everyday life of a plague barber. The sources provide information relating to medical diagnosis and treatment; the barber's relationship to his patients; and the public's perception of the barber and his work. There is also a good deal to be learned relating to Johann Gregor Gutturff himself: his self-perception as a person suffering from plague, his

The present article deals with the standing and the tasks of midwives in 19th century Württemberg. After outlining the legal framework of obstetrics, special emphasis was given to the education and activities of contemporary midwives, and to their numbers. At the beginning of the 18th century, obstetrics was almost exclusively in the hands of women. After 1800, a growing number of barber-surgeons and physicians began to practise obstetrics. At the same time, vocational training and qualification of women-obstetricians increased considerably. Schools for midwives and lying-in hospitals were fou

Jachiam Elias Frizzun (1657-1714), a barber-surgeon who practised in his native mountain village of Celerina (Grisons, Switzerland) from 1693 to 1713, has left a case-book written in Rhaeto-Romanic and covering the whole period of his professional activity. This unique source shows, among other things, that this village surgeon treated both medical and surgical conditions, though obstetrics was obviously the exclusive domain of the midwife. In chronic disease leading to death Frizzun was not called for, and only exceptionally did he attend smallpox patients. Some characteristic case histories

This overview brings together historical data on health services and health culture from original documents and scarce information published by historians. The seventeenth century Varazdin was a bigger town than Zagreb, and it later even took the title of the Croatian capital from Zagreb (between 1767 and 1776). The review opens with a description of old municipal hospices, specific social and public health institutions which can been traced back to 1454 and which existed throughout the 17th century. At that time, barber-surgeons, who practiced a form of medicine which involved the use of hand

INTRODUCTION: Authors present history data on development of the medical profession in Prussia, Germany, Austria and Hungary, that is countries from which surgeons, midwives and physicians most often came to work in Senta. It has been established that mostly junior physicians and "surgeons" came to our country, and from the forties till nineties of the 19th century they made a considerable number of our first medical professionals. In 1872 a law was passed according to which only doctors of medicine with university degrees were allowed to practice medicine, and so junior physicians gradually d

Early reports told us that the first pericardiotomy was performed by Baron Dominique Jean Larrey, Napoleon's chief military surgeon. In this article, we reveal a previous operation of that kind and its publication by Francisco Romero, who had a 9-year head start over Larrey's performance. The aim of this article was to briefly review the two-century-old history of pericardial fenestration.

PURPOSE: We discuss the history of Frère Jacques Beaulieu, a celebrated 17th century French lithotomist, and question the relationship of his name to a well-known nursery rhyme character.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed historical reports about Beaulieu and his career as a lithotomist. Nursery rhyme interpretations were also reviewed.
RESULTS: Beaulieu was born in 1651 to a peasant family and learned the practice of lithotomy by apprenticeship. He was never formally ordained yet donned a monk habit and called himself Frère Jacques. He was the first person to use the lateral approach to pe

The removal of the uvula for minor pharyngeal lesions is unusual in Western otorhinolaryngological practice. However, uvulectomy is a common procedure for "throat problems' in Nigeria and some other African countries by traditional surgeons. This is because it is believed that the elongated uvula is the root cause of all throat problems. These traditional surgeons are usually barbers by profession and only practice surgery on a part-time basis. Most of their patients do well but some have to be rushed to the hospital with severe post-operative bleeding. Attention of Europeans and other foreign

Philip Barrough was an Elizabethan surgeon and physician who, in 1587, published the first book on medicine in the English language. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of the overall knowledge of medicine of the time, Barrough devoted several chapters to the diagnosis and management of the diseases of the teeth and diseases of the mouth and oropharynx. Very little is known about the life of Barrough, such as the dates of his birth and death and where he practiced medicine. It is curious that despite his major contribution to medicine, and the fact that his book went into seven edition

The origins of New Spain Inquisition whose jurisdiction extended also to Philippine Islands, are related herein. Physicians and surgeons who worked as Inquisition officers are discussed, from the first Dr. Juan de la Fuente who was appointed on May 9, 1572, to Dr. Pedro del Castillo, appointed on September 24, 1644. Likewise, physicians and surgeons judged by the Holy Office are mentioned. During the XVI century, those judged were few and insignificant personages, the first was the Irish Protestant William Corniels a barber surgeon, who arrived with the John Hawkins' pirate fleet in 1568 and s

In the 18th century, numerous diseases with symptoms of oral cavity were cured by chirurgien-dentist, barber-surgeons, or tooth drawer. The so called "dentitio difficilis" was blamed for the high children mortality, therefore gum cut or use of leeches was advised as a treatment. Both acute and chronic type of gum inflammation was called scurvy. It seems that the mechanical removal of plaque was enough to cure the scurvy as it was written in advertisements from that time. Syphilis was present in the everyday life throughout centuries, and assumed to cause different stigmas in the oral cavity. T

In comparison with other surgical procedures concerning the breast, the history of reduction mammaplasty is relatively short. Some authors have mistaken Paulos of Aegina for the pioneer in this field, although he occupied himself exclusively with gynaecomastia. Since some decades Hanns Schaller, the so-called "barber" of Augsburg, is considered to be the first surgeon to have performed a reduction mammaplasty by breast amputation in 1561. However, exact references have not been available so far. We found the original text containing the description of the procedure written by a contemporary in

Organized health service in Bosnia and Herzegovina practically started by the treatment of the sick in the Hadji Sinan's Tekke that was founded in 1768. Before that, the civilian population had been mainly treated in their homes, while the army were treated in barracks or hired hans (inns). As late as the nineteenth century, health care was provided by quack doctors, treating physicians or surgeons and barbers, who were trained, beside the circumcision of male children, for tooth extraction, broken bone setting, and sometimes even for performing minor surgical operations (a specially trained b

The history of women as medical and surgical practitioners stretches back to at least 3500 B. C. Wall painting in tombs and temples of ancient Egypt show them performing surgical procedures and there is also evidence that women surgeons were practicing in ancient Sumeria, Babylon, Greece and Rome. During the middle ages as per formal decree issued by the church in the twelfth century monks were prohibited from "blood-letting" or performing operations. This effectively relegated wound treatment, bleeding and bone-setting to barbers and women. Women were particularly valued for their skill in ob
