Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy characterised by retinal dystrophy, obesity, post-axial polydactyly, renal dysfunction, learning difficulties and hypogonadism. Many associated minor features can be helpful in making a diagnosis and are important in the clinical management of BBS. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and can be confirmed by sequencing of known disease-causing genes in 80% of patients. BBS genes encode proteins that localise to the cilia and basal body and are involved in cilia biogenesis and function. Mutations lead to defective cilia

A young boy of 9 years hailing from Fulpur, Mymensingh was admitted in the department of Ophthalmology, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, Bangladesh on the 26th November, 2007 with the complaints of dimness of vision of both the eyes and night blindness since birth. The boy suffered poor mental performances with delayed mild stone development. He was apathetic looking and below average IQ with short stature. Visual acuity of this patient recorded 6/60 both the eyes with nystagmus. Fundus examination revealed waxy disc atrophy, arteriolar attenuation and retinal degeneration both

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a ciliopathy causing multivisceral abnormalities. Its prevalence in Europe is from 1/125,000 to 1/175,000. This disorder is defined by a combination of clinical signs: obesity, pigmentary retinopathy, post-axial polydactyly, polycystic kidneys, hypogenitalism, and learning disabilities, many of which appearing after several years of evolution. Individual clinical phenotype is highly variable. Most signs are present in a majority of patients but only pigmentary retinopathy is constant after infancy. There are many other associated minor clinical signs including di

Tapetoretinal degeneration, obesity, polydactyly, mental retardation, and hypogonadism are the cardinal signs of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. Formerly grouped with Laurence-Moon syndrome, Bardet-Biedl has established itself as a separate entity. It is one of the rare systemic diseases associated with a form of retinitis pigmentosa. Presented here is a case report of a child first diagnosed with this condition. The importance of identifying the systemic signs, ocular involvement, electrophysiologic testing, genetics, and management are discussed.

UNLABELLED: We report a case of Bardet-Biedl syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A nine-year-old boy was having problems of recent loss of vision when in the dark. He was born with polydactyly in the feet for which he had surgery performed when he was seven weeks old. Mental retardation was significant and his vision was poor. Clinical and electrophysiologic examinations showed the existence of a pale optic disc and loss of the electroretinographic response under scotopic and photopic conditions.
DISCUSSION: Based on the history, presentation, ophthalmic clinical examination, obesity, mental retardation

This case report describes the presentation of a patient with Bardet-Biedl syndrome. Bardet-Biedl Syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition that includes retinal dystrophy, dystrophic extremities (commonly polydactyly), obesity, hypogenitalism, and renal disease. Cognitive deficit has also been considered part of the syndrome. The historically associated Laurence-Moon syndrome includes spastic paraparesis but not the obesity and polydactyly. They are now considered separate conditions. The most common feature of Bardet-Biedl syndrome is retinal dystrophy. The appearance of the retina in the

The Bardet-Biedl syndrome is characterized by five main features: obesity, polydactyly, pigmentary retinopathy, mental deficiency and hypogonadism; recently a sixth feature, renal disease, has been described. It was formerly known as the Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome, but Laurence and Moon described a different entity in which the main feature was paraplegia. Fourteen cases have been seen: all had pigmentary retinopathy which, in most cases, was severe and tended to affect central vision early in life. All had subnormal intelligence, twelve were obese, ten had polydactyly, eight hypogonadism, a

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is an autosomal recessive disease with a prevalence of about 1/125,000. The syndrome involves mixed rod-cone dystrophy (which becomes obvious by 6 years of age). About two thirds of patients have postaxial polydactyly, and sometimes syndactyly, brachydactyly, and/or clinodactyly may be present. Hypogonadism and renal involvement occur in about 40%, mental retardation in about 50%, and truncal obesity in about 70%; it is present early, along with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Vision becomes markedly impaired by about age

A 14 year old Bangladeshi boy presented with obesity, reduced vision, mental retardation, hypogonadism, delayed development and learning difficulty. On examination, he had polydactyly, moon face, bilateral gynaecomastia, small penis and undescended testes. Retinitis pigmentosa was found on fundoscopy. With typical features, he was diagnosed as a case of Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome. It is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with mutation in 6 loci identified so far. It is commonly found in communities with high inter-family marriage. Clinical features appear early in childhood and diagn

Until recently, Bardet-Biedl syndrome was considered as a classic autosomal recessive condition. The disorder is defined by the association of the following clinical features: retinitis pigmentosa, polydactyly, obesity, hypogonadism, and possible mental retardation. This syndrome leads to multiple handicaps (visual impairment, complications of obesity, kidney failure, endocrine dysfunction). This condition, apparently clearly defined from a clinical point of view, appears to be genetically heterogenous. To date, six different genes have been identified: BBS1, BBS2, BBS4, BBS6, BBS7 and BBS8. I

An unusual association of Bardet-Biedl syndrome with cystinuria was described in one patient. A 21-year-old male was admitted to hospital because of renal failure, severe deterioration of visual acuity, polydactyly, brachydactyly, and mental retardation. Laboratory investigations revealed a serum creatinine of 292 mumol/L (3.3 mg/dL) and a GFR of 25 mL/min per 1.73 m2. Quantitative ion exchange chromatography demonstrated an increased urinary excretion rate of cystine, lysine, arginine, and ornithine. The ophthalmologic examination showed a severe atypical retinal dystrophy. Visual acuity was

In 1984, 32 persons with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome (LMBB) were registered in Norway. This means that the disorder was seen at a rate of 1 in 128,000 inhabitants. Of these, 26 attended the Frambu Health Centre, where they consulted a pediatrician, a psychologist, a dentist, a social worker, a geneticist, a teacher for the blind and an ophthalmologist. The cardinal signs were retinitis pigmentosa, obesity and polydactyly. We also found that all the patients had disturbance of tooth formation. Many had hypogenitalism. Mental retardation is usually included as a cardinal sign. Our impres

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) and Usher syndrome (USH) are the most prevalent syndromic forms of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), together they make up almost a quarter of the patients with RP. BBS is defined by the association of retinopathy, obesity, hypogonadism, renal dysfunction, postaxial polydactyly and mental retardation. This clinically complex syndrome is genetically heterogeneous with linkage to more than 6 loci, and 4 genes have been cloned so far. Recent molecular data present evidence that, in some instances, the clinical manifestation of BBS requires recessive mutations in 1 of the 6 BB

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare familial and multi-system disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and wide range of clinical variability. Its main manifestations are progressive retinal dystrophy, renal dysfunction, post-axial polydactyly, central obesity, mental retardation, and hypogonadism. Renal failure is known to be the main cause of death in patients with BBS. Retinal dystrophy and other eye diseases seen in patients with BBS can cause severe visual impairment and blindness at an early age. After written consent was obtained from the patient, we report the clin

The aim of this study was to explore kidney failure (KF) in Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), focusing on high-risk gene variants, demographics, and morbidity. We employed the Clinical Registry Investigating BBS (CRIBBS) to identify 44 (7.2%) individuals with KF out of 607 subjects. Molecularly confirmed BBS was identified in 37 KF subjects and 364 CRIBBS registrants. KF was concomitant with recessive causal variants in 12 genes, with BBS10 the most predominant causal gene (26.6%), while disease penetrance was highest in SDCCAG8 (100%). Two truncating variants were present in 67.6% of KF cases. KF

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bardet Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare disease characterized by obesity and hyperphagia. Despite the very high prevalence of paediatric and adult obesity in this population, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is not well described.
RECENT FINDINGS: Studies in small and moderately large cohorts suggest a high prevalence of traditional risk factors for diabetes mellitus in people with BBS. People with BBS appear to have a high prevalence of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Small cohort studies have identified high rates of sleep disordered breathing, including sleep

Bardet Biedl syndrome is an autosomal recessive ciliopathie. It is a pleiotropic disorder characterised by retinal dystrophy, renal dysfunction, polydactyly, obesity, cognitive deficit and hypogenitalism. Diagnosis is based on clinical features. Molecular genetic testing is available. There is no specific treatment, a multidisciplinary approach is required. We report the case of a 13-year-old female patient with obesity and hyperphagia, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, polydactyly, cognitive deficit and visual impairment. A multigenic panel allowed the identification of two heterozygous pathog

BACKGROUND: Cilia line the surface of the respiratory tract and beat in a coordinated wave to protect the lungs against infection. Bardet Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is a rare condition attributed to cilia dysfunction. Murine models of BBS suggest a respiratory phenotype; however, no reports have studied the translation of these findings in patients.
METHODS: We assessed the clinical symptoms of motile cilia dysfunction and the histology of ciliated respiratory epithelium in patients with BBS.
RESULTS: We report an increased prevalence of neonatal respiratory distress at birth (12%), general practi
