Since the early 1900s, Bartonella species were known only to cause human disease resulting from very restricted geographic (bartonellosis) or environmental influences ("trench fever"). In the 1990s, and in parallel, cat scratch disease and bacillary angiomatosis were definitively linked to Bartonella species. Subsequently, widespread use of modern diagnostic methods revealed the broad ecologic niche of this organism and greatly expanded our knowledge of the epidemiology and clinical presentations associated with this genus. A large number of reservoirs and vectors involved with Bartonella prop

Bartonella quintana is a gram-negative bacterium causing trench fever, an illness historically acquired by soldiers during World War I. More recently, outbreaks of trench fever have been reported in those experiencing homelessness in the United States, France, Russia, and Tokyo, as well as in children in Nepal and persons in Ethiopia. Reports of B. quintana infection outside of Tokyo are rare in Japan. The aim of this study was to examine body lice and blood obtained from people staying in shelters in Osaka (2009-2010) for B. quintana via polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbe

Bartonella henselae, an infectious agent causing cat-scratch disease and vasculoproliferative disorders in humans, is a fastidious facultative intracellular pathogen. The outer membrane proteins of B. henselae are key molecules that play a primary role in host-cell interactions. We isolated B. henselae outer membrane proteins, using the ionic detergent N-lauroyl sarcosine sodium salt and sodium carbonate, purification by two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis, and protein identification using mass spectrometry. Treatment with buffers containing ASB-14 and ZWITTERGENT 3-10 increased solubili

Bartonella spp. are parasites of mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells, transmitted by blood-feeding arthropod ectoparasites. Different species of rodents may constitute the main hosts of Bartonella, including several zoonotic species of Bartonella. The aim of this study was to identify and compare Bartonella species and genotypes isolated from rodent hosts from the South Sinai, Egypt. Prevalence of Bartonella infection was assessed in rodents (837 Acomys dimidiatus, 73 Acomys russatus, 111 Dipodillus dasyurus, and 65 Sekeetamys calurus) trapped in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 in four dry

OBJECTIVES: As a result of extensive field-related activities, military working dogs (MWDs) have an increased occupational risk for acquiring vector-borne infectious diseases.
METHODS: Indirect fluorescent antibody, Bartonella alpha-proteobacteria growth medium enrichment culture, and 16-23S Bartonella intergenic transcribed spacer polymerase chain reaction were performed using blood, serum, or tissue specimens.
RESULTS: Endocarditis was diagnosed in three MWDs infected with Bartonella vinsonii subspecies (subsp.) berkhoffii genotype III. One dog was also infected with Bartonella rochalimae.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella is a genus of Gram-negative facultative intracellular Alphaproteobacteria of public health importance. Although they are known to mainly infect mammalian hosts with some blood-feeding arthropods having been confirmed as vectors, there is some evidence of Bartonella association with non-mammalian hosts including birds.
METHODS: Here we used high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and Sanger sequencing of the citrate synthase (gltA) genes to test for the presence of Bartonellaceae in the blood of three migratory cavity nesting bird species, purple martins (Progne subis), t

Gray squirrels, Sciurus carolinensis, were livetrapped in 2 different habitat types, woodland (67 squirrels) and parkland (53 squirrels), in southeastern Georgia. Ectoparasites were recovered from anesthetized squirrels and compared between hosts from the 2 habitats. Because of the absence of low vegetation in parkland habitats, it was hypothesized that the ectoparasite fauna, especially ticks and chiggers, would be more diverse on woodland squirrels. The results were generally in agreement with this hypothesis. Seventeen species of ectoparasites were recovered from woodland squirrels, compare

The number of species that comprise the family of Bartonellaceae, genus Bartonella, has recently increased from one to 11 species, five of which have been associated with different diseases and syndromes in humans. The rapidly growing number of human pathogens has led several investigators to regard bartonellosis and other associated syndromes as important emerging infectious diseases. This article presents the history and epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of bartonellosis and associated diseases, including Carrión's disease, trench fever, endocarditis and bacteremia, b

The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence and distribution of Bartonella species in companion animals, wildlife and their associated fleas in different landscapes of the Atlantic Forest ecoregion of Argentina, and to analyse the phylogenetic relationships between the Bartonella species identified in this study in addition to those found in other regions available in GenBank. A total of 257 mammals, including rodents, opossums, dogs and cats, were examined to detect the presence of Bartonella in both fleas and host tissues. The study revealed the presence of Bartonella in rodent fleas

We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra

Microbe of taxonomical families Rickettsiaceae aceal and Bartonellaceae of Rickettsiales order have caused not less than 14 nosological forms of disease among people in different parts of the world. About 8 of them--in Russia and in the former Soviet Republics. These diseases are not unequivocal from epidemiological point of view. Trench, Marseilles and other forms of fever, murine typhus, vesicules rickettsia, etc. have been liquidated and never recurred for 30-40 years. Prowazek's [correction of Provachek's] rickettsia in its two forms has lost its epidemiological meaning in Russia and is ne

The case of a 24 year old female student who developed typical cat scratch disease following an insect sting invited to review the literature. Over the last two years, Rocalimaea henselae could be identified and is now considered to be responsible for the majority of infected cases. It is related to Rochalimaea quintana that provokes trench fever and to Bartonella bacilliformis, known as the inciting agent of the verruca peruana and of Oroya fever. Recently, it has been proposed to integrate Rochalimaea and Bartonella into the family of Bartonellaceae. The diverse and fascinating array of clin

The genus Bartonella now includes four species which may infect humans : B. bacilliformis, B. quintana, B. henselae, and B. elizabethae. B. bacilliformis, the agent of Carrion's disease, was the only species of the genus since 1993 when Rochalimaea species were removed from the genus Rochalimaea and included in the genus Bartonella, within the family Bartonellaceae. B. quintana is the etiologic agent of trench fever, bacillary angiomatosis, septicemia, endocarditis, and chronic lymphadenopathy. B. henselae is responsible for bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis of the liver or the spleen, septicem

A wealth of new data have become available to the scientific community as a result of the sequencing of many pathogen genomes. A recent meeting devoted to functional genomics of pathogenic microorganisms confirmed the notion that bacterial genomes are not static, because large blocks of genes can be acquired or deleted. Less complex environments usually result in reduction in genome size, while genome expansion is usually associated with environmental change and complexity. During the meeting, pathogenicity and evolutionary aspects were illustrated for enteric pathogens, as well as the microev

Bartonella Quintana is an exceptionally rare cause of endocarditis. The frequency of this condition is increasing and is probably underestimated because of the difficulty in diagnosing. The clinical context is that of socially deprived classes, the agent of transmission of the germ being body lice. The commonest valve affected is the aortic valve. This infection may also give rise to a mitral annulus abscess, as in this particular case. The diagnosis should be suspected in all cases of endocarditis with negative blood cultures in socially deprived patients as special diagnostic methods are req

BACKGROUND: Awareness for flea- and tick-borne infections has grown in recent years and the range of microorganisms associated with these ectoparasites is rising. Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of Cat Scratch Disease, and other Bartonella species have been reported in fleas and ticks. The role of Ixodes ricinus ticks in the natural cycle of Bartonella spp. and the transmission of these bacteria to humans is unclear. Rickettsia spp. have also been reported from as well ticks as also from fleas. However, to date no flea-borne Rickettsia spp. were reported from the Netherlands. Here, th
