[Basal cell carcinoma].

Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent of all cancers. Its incidence has risen those last decades because of the increase in sun exposure habits. People with light skin complexion are particularly at risk. Ionizing radiations, arsenicism, various genodermatoses (Gorlin syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosum, nevus sebaceous) are other pre-disposing factors. Basal cell carcinoma usually present as small lesion with a pearly border and telangiectasias. Other clinical types must also be recognized such as the nodular, the infiltrative, the superficial and the pigmented forms. They are usually located

Metastatic Basal cell carcinoma: a biological continuum of Basal cell carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for 80% of all nonmelanoma skin cancers. Its metastasis is extremely rare, ranging between 0.0028 and 0.55 of all BCC cases. The usual metastasis to lymph nodes, lungs, bones, or skin is from the primary tumor situated in the head and neck region in nearly 85% cases. A 69-year-old male developed progressively increasing multiple, fleshy, indurated, and at places pigmented noduloulcerative plaques over back, chest, and left axillary area 4 years after wide surgical excision of a pathologically diagnosed basal cell carcinoma. The recurrence was diagnosed as in

Photobleaching-based autofluorescence mapping reveals distinct patterns in sporadic basal cell carcinoma, nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome-associated basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Autofluorescence (AF) imaging is a promising non-invasive tool for skin cancer diagnostics. However, AF intensity alone often fails to reliably delineate tumor boundaries due to strong influence from melanin, keratin, vasculature, and surface scattering. AF photobleaching kinetics provide an additional functional contrast linked to endogenous fluorophore content and environment microstructure, but their diagnostic potential in clinical skin cancer imaging remains underexplored. METHODS: To investigate the photobleaching phenomenon, we analyzed AF and photobleaching behavior in 8

Metastatic Basal Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis of metastatic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains challenging, in part due to its rarity. With the advent of molecularly targeted therapies, recognition of this entity is more important than ever. METHODS: We identified 11 cases of metastatic BCC over a 13-year period. We analyzed these tumors in conjunction with their respective primary tumors by histomorphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic analyses. RESULTS: We identified three morphologic patterns of metastasis in BCC. The most common (seven cases) was characterized by completely typical features of BC

Periungual basal cell carcinoma.

Periungual basal cell carcinoma is rare and needs to be differentiated from other common diseases that affect this region. Several factors are associated with the development of this tumor, and sun damage seems to play an important role in its pathogenesis. Dermoscopy of clinically indolent lesions on the nail unit can shorten the diagnostic process and avoid destructive treatment and functional damage.

Giant Basal cell carcinoma.

Servicemembers are often exposed to extreme environments with sun exposure, often laying the foundation for future skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common of skin cancers. We present the case of a 36-year-old male active duty Seabee who presents with a left shoulder plaque that initially started as an erythematous papule but has now increased to greater than 6 cm in the past 10 years and is diagnosed as giant basal cell carcinoma (GBCC). Although only 0.5% to 1% of BCCs develop into GBCCs, there is the potential for metastasis and even death. This article addresses the conce

Vulvar basal cell carcinoma.

Although the basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy of skin, it is rarely seen in vulva and constitutes 2% to 4% of all vulvar cancers. The cause is unknown but, chronic vulvar irritation is the most important underlying factor. The patients over 60 years are affected more frequently than younger ones.

Axillary basal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) rarely occurs in the axilla. Only 18 cases have been reported in the world literature. OBJECTIVES: To report our institution's 11-year experience with axillary BCC. METHODS: A review of patient charts and biopsy specimens is given. RESULTS: We report 14 patients with 15 axillary BCCs. The average patient age was 65.6. The average lesion size was 10.8 mm. Nine patients had a personal history of skin cancer at sun-exposed sites. One patient had basal cell nevus syndrome. A history of ionizing radiation and severe sunburn involving the axilla was each see

Vulvar basal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Vulvar basal cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that often displays aggressive biologic behavior. Recurrence after simple excision is common, and metastases have been reported. Early diagnosis is essential and rests upon histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens, since the clinical appearance of these neoplasms may be deceptively innocent. CASE: A 65-year-old woman was seen with a nonhealing skin lesion on the right vulva. Physical examination revealed a 0.3 X 0.3 cm crusted papule on the right labium majus. A saucerization biopsy was performed. Histopathologic examination of

Pleomorphic basal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: A variant of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with scattered large, pleomorphic cells has previously been reported as "basal cell epithelioma with giant tumor cells" and "basal cell carcinoma with monster cells." OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to describe the clinical, histologic, and DNA ploidy findings in BCCs with these cytologic features. METHODS: Nineteen pleomorphic BCCs from 15 patients were prospectively collected, and other BCCs in these patients were retrospectively reviewed by light microscopy. One lesion was recurrent. Seven of the pleomorphic BCCs and one nonpleomorphic BCC we

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma rarely metastasizes. There are over 130 reported cases, 70% of which involve lymph nodes. In many cases a large, chronic, neglected or inadequately treated basal cell carcinoma preceded the metastasis. We report a case in which a basal cell carcinoma of the cheek metastasized to cervical lymph nodes.

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma.

A case of basal cell carcinoma which metastasized to an axillary lymph node is presented. There were no histological features that enabled either the presumed primary lesion or the metastasis to be distinguished from the usual non-metastasizing basal cell carcinoma. Evidence is presented that metastasis is considerably less freguent in Queensland that is reported in an overseas series.

[Terebrant basal cell carcinoma].

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent skin cancer. It never affects the mucosa. It is characterized by a local malignancy with an extremely rare risk of developing distant metastasis and the lowest mortality. However in the absence of diagnosis and early surgery, BCC can be locally invasive and result in severe tissue destruction. It can ulcerate and its growth can be extensive and destructive: terebrant tumors affecting the structures of the muscles and the bone. We here report the case of a 80-year old woman living in an isolated rural areas, presenting with ulcerated exudative and

Giant basal cell carcinoma.

A 72-year-old white man presented with a large cutaneous tumor on his back. The patient said the lesion, mostly asymptomatic, had increased in size for about 7 years. Physical examination revealed a vegetating mass (Figure 1), partially ulcerated, measuring 30 x 20 cm, which easily dripped serum and blood, with small necrotic areas and a sclerotic border. Perilesional skin appeared edematous, probably owing to inflammation and impaired lymphatic flow. Clinically, there was no evidence of lymph node involvement. His family history was noncontributory. Hematologic examination revealed hypochromi

[Metastatic basal cell carcinoma].

One day before his death, a 66-year-old man who had been suffering since childhood from a severely itching and repeatedly bleeding skin lesion was examined for the first time by a general practitioner who immediately advised hospitalization. On admission, an extensive rodent ulcer on his back was noted and septic shock diagnosed. Because of the hopeless diagnosis no life-supporting measures were undertaken. Postmortem examination revealed an 18 x 26 cm sized ulcerating basal cell carcinoma on the back with infiltration of the thoracic vertebrae and a fist-sized paravertebral abscess between th

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome or multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma syndrome?

We present a case of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also known as Gorlin syndrome, or basal cell nevus syndrome, which clinically follows a course more consistent with multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinomas or multiple hereditary trichoepitheliomas. The following article describes the case in detail and gives an overview of other genodermatosis, which were initially considered in the differential and which may be linked pathogenetically.

Basal Cell Carcinoma With Calcification: Case Report of Calcifying Basal Cell Carcinoma and Review of Calcinosis Cutis Associated With Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cutaneous neoplasm. Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of calcium within the dermis. An 80-year-old man presented with a pearly nodule on his left nasal ala; a shave biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a nodular basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis, which was removed with Mohs micrographic surgery. The incidence of basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis as well as the classification, identification, and potential origin of calcium deposits in basal cell carcinoma are discussed. Basal cell carcinoma can be associated with calcinosis cutis; indeed,
