Knee Injuries in Baseball.

While knee injuries account for just 7% of injuries in professional and collegiate baseball, they are the fourth most common cause of missed professional games. The 3 most common knee-related issues in baseball are patellar tendinopathy, meniscus tears, and medial collateral ligament sprains. While injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament tears and patellar dislocations are less common, they are notable due to their potentially significant effect on time missed. Treatment considerations of all these pathologies are multifactorial and should include skeletal maturity, level of play, timing o

Concussions in Baseball Players.

Sports-related concussion represents a unique type of brain injury because the goal of medical care is to return the athlete safely and expeditiously to the same activity that led to the concussion. The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool has standardized assessment of concussed athletes and their return to play. Advances in brain imaging, assessment of molecular biomarkers in blood and other body fluids, and accurate wearable sensors of force and acceleration are being applied to the study of concussion in athletes. In conjunction with long-term outcome data, such technologies will continue to m

Baseball and softball injuries.

Baseball and softball injuries can be a result of both acute and overuse injuries. Soft tissue injuries include contusions, abrasions, and lacerations. Return to play is allowed when risk of further injury is minimized. Common shoulder injuries include those to the rotator cuff, biceps tendon, and glenoid labrum. Elbow injuries are common in baseball and softball and include medial epicondylitis, ulnar collateral ligament injury, and osteochondritis dissecans. Typically conservative treatment with relative rest, medication, and a rehabilitation program will allow return to play. Surgical inter

Performance of baseball headgear.

An experiment was conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of commercially available baseball headgear in a simulated environment where the head of the batter is struck. Using a compressed air cannon, baseballs were fired at an instrumented headform at frontal and temporal locations with and without a helmet. Striking velocities ranged from 50 to 120 mph and rebound velocities were 1/3 to 1/2 of that of the initial speed. Additional impact tests were conducted on equivalent flat helmet sections backed by a rigid steel plate, the results of which seemed to indicate that the materials and config

Medial elbow joint space gapping associated with repetitive baseball pitching in preadolescent baseball players.

BACKGROUND: The baseball pitching motion creates valgus stress to the medial elbow, which contributes to increased medial elbow joint space gapping. The musculoskeletal systems of preadolescent baseball players are immature compared with those of adults, but it is unclear whether the repetitive pitching action causes an increase in medial elbow joint space gapping. This study aimed to examine differences in medial elbow joint space gapping based on the pitch count of preadolescent baseball players compared with those of adult players. METHODS: The participants were 11 healthy preadolescent ba

Neurologic injuries in baseball players.

In baseball pitchers, injuries to the throwing arm are common due to the extreme stresses placed on the elbow and shoulder joints. These result in peripheral nerve syndromes including ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and suprascapular neuropathy at the shoulder. Recurrent trauma to the axillary artery causing aneurysm and thrombus formation may lead to distal ischemia and stroke. Careful evaluation is required to identify musculoskeletal, neurologic, and vascular causes of upper extremity symptoms in the throwing athlete.

Epidemiology of collegiate baseball injuries.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to establish injury incidence, onset, location, type, and severity for a collegiate baseball team. The second objective was to compare the number of musculoskeletal problems for which baseball players sought treatment with those that resulted in time lost or modified participation. METHODS: This was a prospective, epidemiologic study. A complaint was defined as any evaluation by a player to the medical staff that required either evaluation or treatment. An injury was defined as any complaint that resulted in altered participation or time lost from practice or game partici

Digital ischemia in baseball players.

Eight baseball players developed digital ischemia as a result of repetitive ball impact. Symptoms and signs were coolness, numbness, cyanosis, paleness, and a positive reaction to the digital Allen's test. Seven of the eight players developed digital ischemia between the ages of 16 and 17. Angiograms of four patients with an occluded index digital artery are presented. Thermograms of four patients with a cool area of the left index finger are also presented. We investigated the incidence of digital ischemia by administration of a questionnaire. The respondents were 578 players belonging to clu

Shoulder proprioception in baseball pitchers.

We examined proprioceptive differences between the dominant and nondominant shoulders of 21 collegiate baseball pitchers without a history of shoulder instability or surgery. A proprioceptive testing device was used to measure kinesthesia and joint position sense. Joint position sense was significantly (P =.05) more accurate in the nondominant shoulder than in the dominant shoulder when starting at 75% of maximal external rotation and moving into internal rotation. There were no significant differences for proprioception in the other measured positions or with kinesthesia testing. Six pitchers

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Baseball.

Foot and ankle injuries in baseball provide unique challenges to the provider. Most foot and ankle injuries (ie, ankle sprains and contusions) can be managed non-operatively using a similar approach as in other athletic populations, but a few unique mechanisms of injury in baseball are important to be aware of. While upper extremity injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears and labral tears are extensively reported on in the literature, there is a need for further baseball-specific research on foot and ankle injuries, especially given the increasing prevalence of these injuries ov

Wrist and Hand Injuries in Baseball.

Pitching, catching, and base-running may predispose professional baseball players to injury-particularly in the hand and wrist. In this study, we outline the diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of commonly encountered injuries among these high-level athletes. Wrist injuries discussed include hook of hamate fractures, extensor carpi ulnaris tendon disorders, scapholunate instability, and triangular fibrocartilage complex tears. Hand injuries discussed include thumb ulnar collateral ligament injury, flexor tendon pulley rupture, hypothenar hammer syndrome, and blisters.

Os acromiale in a baseball catcher.

Throwing injuries of the shoulder can result from an acute traumatic event or chronic overuse. Shoulder impingement has multiple etiologies; the most common being rotator cuff weakness/overuse and resultant glenohumeral instability. However, an uncommon cause of shoulder impingement syndrome is that of a nonfused os acromiale. There are three centers of ossification in the acromion which are usually completely fused by 18 yr of age. The most common site of nonunion is between the meso-acromion and meta-acromion. Os acromiale is reported at a rate of 14/1000 (1.4%) and is bilateral in approxima

Baseball Injuries of the Hand and Wrist.

Injuries of the hand and wrist are common in baseball. Because of the unique motions and loads encountered in this sport, physicians treating baseball players may encounter hand and wrist injuries ranging from common to rare. An understanding of these baseball-related injuries must include their pathoanatomy, diagnosis, and treatment options. This knowledge is critical for the general orthopaedic surgeon treating baseball players to allow for timely and appropriate treatment. This article reviews the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of baseball-related hand and wrist injuries, with a

Predicting zygoma fractures from baseball impact.

The purpose of this study is to develop injury risk functions that predict zygoma fracture based on baseball type and impact velocity. Zygoma fracture strength data from published experiments were mapped with the force exerted by a baseball on the orbit as a function of ball velocity. Using a normal distribution, zygoma fracture risk functions were developed. Experimental evaluation of these risk functions was performed using six human cadaver tests and two baseballs of different stiffness values. High speed video measured the baseball impact velocity. Post test analysis of the cadaver skulls
