Silent witnesses: basidiomycota as forensic biomarkers in human decomposition.

Although forensic mycology has primarily focused on microscale Ascomycota and successional patterns, this review emphasizes the underexplored potential of macroscopic Basidiomycota as biomarkers in decomposition ecology. These taxa require quantitative validation prior to application. We present a conceptual synthesis and hypothesis-generating framework, rather than a formal systematic review. We did not utilize pre-registered criteria, formal protocols, or bias assessment. Consequently, conclusions are provisional and intended to encourage empirical validation. Neurotrophic and Immunomodulatory Lanostane Triterpenoids from Wood-Inhabiting Basidiomycota.

Neurotrophins such as nerve growth factor (ngf) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (bdnf) play important roles in the central nervous system. They are potential therapeutic drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. In this study, we investigated the neurotrophic properties of triterpenes isolated from fruiting bodies of Laetiporus sulphureus and a mycelial culture of Antrodia sp. MUCL 56049. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with hi

Three new wood-inhabiting fungal species of Phanerochaetaceae (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) from Southwest China.

Neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) contribute to early neuromyelitis optica (NMO) histopathology initiated by IgG targeting astrocytic aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels. Yet, the mechanisms underlying neutrophil recruitment and their pathogenic roles in disease progression remain unclear. To investigate molecular-cellular events preceding classical complement cascade activation in a mouse NMO model, we continuously infused, via spinal subarachnoid route, a non-complement-activating mouse monoclonal AQP4-IgG. Simultaneous improvement of aroma and bioactivity of Spirulina platensis: A novel approach by Basidiomycota fermentation.

Fermentation has emerged as a promising strategy to modify aroma profile of Spirulina platensis, yet the application of Basidiomycota for aroma improvement remains largely unexplored. In this study, a Basidiomycota-S. platensis fermentation system was established using edible mushroom strains to improve its sensory properties. Among twelve tested strains, Stropharia rugosoannulata showed the most pronounced aroma improvement after 56 h fermentation at 24 °C under shaking conditions. Sensory evaluation indicated that fermentation effectively reduced undesirable fishy and earthy odors and introd

Systemic infection of Bryoria (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota) by Athelia (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) in western North America.

Bryoria (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota) is one of the dominant genera of hair lichens in western North America and is characteristic of high-elevation conifer forest ecosystems. In areas where Bryoria is abundant, it is common to find thalli in which the thalline filaments become conglutinated, forming brittle dead zones. After sampling Bryoria thalli across western Canada and the northwestern United States at different times of the year, we found that this dieback phenomenon is associated with the winter growth of a mold-forming basidiomycete. We report that this fungus belongs to Athelia (Athelia

Unveiling two new species of Ganoderma (Ganodermataceae, Basidiomycota) causing basal stem rot on oil palm from India.

Ganoderma is a major fungal pathogen causing basal stem rot (BSR) in oil palm, leading to significant yield losses. Owing to high morphological plasticity and complex speciation within the genus, traditional taxonomic approaches have often been insufficient for accurate species identification. Notwithstanding the global diversity of Ganoderma, the species identity and delimitation of the pathogen causing BSR in oil palm in India remain unresolved. In this study, BSR-associated Ganoderma isolates were investigated using an integrated approach combining macro- and micro-morphological characteriz

Morphological and molecular identification of two new wood-inhabiting species of Hyphoderma (Basidiomycota) from Qinghai, northwestern China.

Wood-inhabiting fungi serve as primary decomposers of lignocellulose in forest ecosystems, facilitating carbon release and nutrient turnover. These processes are essential for sustaining material cycling, energy flow, and soil health. The genus Hyphoderma, within the Basidiomycota, is a notable group among wood-inhabiting fungi. This study introduces two new resupinate, adnate, wood-inhabiting fungal taxa, Hyphoderma tenuicystidiatum and H. tabuliformis, based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Hyphoderma tenuicystidiatum is distinguished by light vinaceous gray fresh basidi

The first two mitochondrial genomes for the genus Ramaria reveal mitochondrial genome evolution of Ramaria and phylogeny of Basidiomycota.

In the present study, we assembled and analyzed the mitogenomes of two Ramaria species. The assembled mitogenomes of Ramaria cfr. rubripermanens and R. rubella were circularized, with sizes of 126,497 bp and 143,271 bp, respectively. Comparative mitogenome analysis showed that intron region contributed the most (contribution rate, 43.74%) to the size variations of Ramaria mitogenomes. The genetic contents, gene length, tRNAs, and codon usages of the two Ramaria mitogenomes varied greatly. In addition, the evolutionary rates of different core protein coding genes (PCGs) in Phallomycetidae mitog
