The first record of an ocular anomaly in Atlantic midshipman Porichthys plectrodon (Batrachoidiformes: Batrachoididae) is reported from a specimen captured in the Mississippi Canyon. The anomalous specimen was bilaterally anophthalmic and the nape and dorsum were darkly pigmented but alizarin staining and histology revealed a complete eye embedded within the cranium beneath a markedly thickened dermal component of the cornea, along with seemingly minor elaboration of the choroid rete between the cornea and lens. Aetiology is indeterminate and beyond the scope of the study materials but barotra

The Brazilian Amazon estuary is a highly dynamic environment, characterized by substantial organic matter input and a rich diversity of fish species that utilize this ecosystem for feeding and reproduction. Despite its ecological relevance, ichthyo-parasitological research in the region remains limited, particularly regarding the diversity of parasitic species within the class Myxozoa. Among the fish species for which parasitological data are still scarce is the Pacamã frogfish, Batrachoides surinamensis (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), a demersal species that feeds on small invertebrates and fish

Among teleost fishes, representatives of several distantly related groups have sound-producing (sonic/vocal) muscles associated with the swimbladder or pectoral girdle/fin. Here, the diversity of vocal organs and central motor pathways in four families of catfish, order Siluriformes, is compared to that in families from two distantly related orders, the Scorpaeniformes and Batrachoidiformes. Several catfish families have two sonic mechanisms--a swimbladder vibration established by 'drumming muscles' that differ in origin and insertion between families, and a pectoral spine stridulatory apparat

The endocrine pancreas of the toadfish, Halobatrachus didactylus, consists of one large circular principal islet (Brockman body) located in the dorsal side or neck region of the gallbladder, along with various accessory islets of variable sizes and shapes, embedded in the exocrine tissue located within the digestive organs connecting mesenteries. Islet cells showed variable shapes, angular or fusiform, with long cytoplasmic processes, granular cytoplasm, and a large eccentric nucleus. Cells were found scattered or as aggregates or cords. Four primary endocrine cell types immunoreactive for glu

Marine fish play a significant yet understudied role in the oceanic carbon cycle through the production of magnesium-rich calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitates known as ichthyocarbonates. These deposits form in the gut of marine teleost fish in response to salinity, serving as part of their osmoregulation strategy. Through this, marine fish may contribute as much as 9.04 Pg of CaCO3 per year in global new carbonate production, being equivalent to or potentially higher than the production by coccolithophores and pelagic foraminifera. Despite their ecological relevance, the biological mechanism

Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta), a highly territorial marine teleost species, are believed to communicate through chemicals released across the gill during pulsatile urea excretion. While freshwater teleost and crustacean urinary signals have been shown to relay information about dominance to reduce physical aggression in future encounters, the use of chemical signals to convey social status in marine teleosts is understudied. Behavior and urea excretion patterns were monitored in pairs of male toadfish during an initial agonistic encounter and in a 2nd encounter where a subset of pairs had their

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine (FLX), the active ingredient of the antidepressant drug Prozac, inhibits reuptake of the neurotransmitter, serotonin (5-HT; 5-hydroxytryptamine), into cells by the 5-HT transporter (SERT). Given the role of 5-HT in oxygen detection and the cardiovascular and ventilatory responses of fish to hypoxia, we hypothesized that treatment of the Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, with FLX would interfere with their response to hypoxia. Toadfish treated intra-arterially with 3.4 μg.g(-1) FLX under normoxic conditions displayed a transient tachycardi

Increases in ambient salinity demand parallel increases in intestinal base secretion for maintenance of osmoregulatory status, which is likely the cause of a transient acidosis following transfer of euryhaline fish from freshwater to seawater. It was predicted that transfer of the marine Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) from seawater (35 ppt) to hypersaline (60 ppt) seawater (HSW) would lead to a transient acidosis that would be compensated by increases in branchial acid excretion to offset the acid-base disturbance. Toadfish exposed to HSW showed a significant decrease in blood pH and [HCO3-] but

The relationship between sound complexity and the underlying morphology and physiology of the vocal organ anatomy is a fundamental component in the evolution of acoustic communication, particularly for fishes. Among vertebrates, the mammalian larynx and avian syrinx are the best-studied vocal organs, and their ability to produce complex vocalizations has been modeled. The range and complexity of the sounds in mammalian lineages have been attributed, in part, to the bilateral nature of the vocal anatomy. Similarly, we hypothesize that the bipartite swim bladder of some species of toadfish (fami

The genus Kudoa is an important group of parasites within the class Myxozoa, as some species infect a wide range of fish hosts and cause post-mortem myoliquefaction, resulting in significant economic losses. This study describes a new species of Kudoa in toadfish Batrachoides surinamensis. In 60 % of specimens of B. surinamensis collected in the eastern Amazon, elongated white plasmodia were observed in the swim bladder muscle. Subquadrate myxospores measuring 5.6 µm in length, 7.5 µm in width, and 5.5 µm in thickness were recorded, with four polar capsules measuring 2.5 µm in length and 1.5 µ

Evolutionary neurobiologists want to know how neuronal properties (or traits) have been modified to subserve adaptive changes in behavioral phenotypes. Homology can provide a conceptual framework to distinguish the separate contributions of phylogenetic factors and current adaptive modifications to extant traits and behaviors. In this essay, a suite of nine vocal/sonic motor traits are compared in two orders of teleost fishes, the Batrachoidiformes and Scorpaeniformes. Only three of the traits are modified among Scorpaeniformes, the more advanced group. The large number of conserved characters

Florida's shallow seagrass beds experience daily diurnal fluctuations in environmental oxygen, leading to hypoxic episodes (PO2 < 2 mg L-1, ~6 kPa) that have increased in frequency and intensity in recent decades. The native Gulf toadfish (Opsanus beta) have been shown to employ a suite of adaptive cardiovascular, ventilatory and metabolic adjustments to survive moderate hypoxia, but little is known of the mechanisms used to survive severe hypoxia. The objective of this study was to characterize the acute response of Gulf toadfish to severe hypoxia (<2 kPa). We hypothesized that Gulf toadfish

The carbohydrate expression in the epithelium lining the oesophagus of the toadfish Halobatrachus didactylus was studied by means of conventional and lectin histochemistry. The stratified epithelium was constituted by basal cells, polymorphous cells in the intermediate layer, pyramidal and flattened cells in the outer layer and contained two types of large secretory cells: goblet cells and sacciform cells. PAS, Alcian blue pH 2.5 and pH 1.0 stained very strongly the goblet cells, weakly the surface of the other epithelial cells but did not stain the sacciform cells. The goblet cells cytoplasm

Dopamine is integral to attentional and motivational processes, but studies are largely restricted to the central nervous system. In mammals [1, 2] and fishes [3, 4], central dopaminergic neurons project to the inner ear and could modulate acoustic signals at the earliest stages of processing. Studies in rodents show dopamine inhibits cochlear afferent neurons and protects against noise-induced acoustic injury [5-10]. However, other functions for inner ear dopamine have not been investigated, and the effect of dopamine on peripheral auditory processing in non-mammalians remains unknown [11, 12

Vocal communication has emerged as a powerful model for the study of neural mechanisms of social behavior. Modulatory neurochemicals postulated to play a central role in social behavior, related to motivation, arousal, incentive and reward, include the catecholamines, particularly dopamine and noradrenaline. Many questions remain regarding the functional mechanisms by which these modulators interact with sensory and motor systems. Here, we begin to address these questions in a model system for vocal and social behavior, the plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus). We mapped the distribut

Intestinal HCO(3)(-) secretion and NaCl absorption are essential for counteracting dehydration in marine teleost fish. We investigated how these two processes are coordinated in toadfish. HCO(3)(-) stimulated a luminal positive short-circuit current (I(sc)) in intestine mounted in Ussing chamber, bathed with the same saline solution on the external and internal sides of the epithelium. The I(sc) increased proportionally to the [HCO(3)(-)] in the bath up to 80 mM NaHCO(3), and it did not occur when NaHCO(3) was replaced with Na(+)-gluconate or with NaHCO(3) in Cl(-)-free saline. HCO(3)(-) (20 m

The plainfin midshipman (Porichthys notatus) possesses an aglomerular kidney and like other marine teleosts, secretes base into the intestine to aid water absorption. Each of these features could potentially influence acid-base regulation during respiratory acidosis either by facilitating or constraining HCO(3)(-) accumulation, respectively. Thus, in the present study, we evaluated the capacity of P. notatus to regulate blood acid-base status during exposure to increasing levels of hypercapnia (nominally 1-5% CO(2)). Fish exhibited a well-developed ability to increase plasma HCO(3)(-) levels w

Passive acoustic surveys of soniferous marine communities can provide useful metrics for characterizing behavior, abundance, and ecological influences; however, they typically offer limited information about the spatial distribution of biological sources. Recent advances in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) offer the potential to conduct wide-area surveys of bioacoustic activity that would be logistically infeasible with traditional hydrophone measurements. Here, a 2.2 km DAS cable deployed in Narragansett Bay, RI, was used to map the spatial distribution of oyster toadfish chorusing over a 2

Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta, are one among a group of unusual teleosts that excrete urea as their predominant nitrogen end product in response to stressful conditions. Under conditions of crowding or confinement, fasted toadfish excrete the majority of their nitrogen waste in large pulses of urea (>90% of total nitrogen) lasting up to 3 h. An earlier study demonstrated that cortisol has an inhibitory influence on urea pulse size. The present study tested the hypothesis that cortisol mediates changes in urea pulse size in ureotelic toadfish through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and not the m
