This study investigates the spectrum of abusive behaviors experienced by women in intimate relationships by comparing their prevalence among women in nonviolent and violent partnerships, utilizing a new validated measure introduced here. Using data from 926 Israeli women, the research examines 20 distinct abusive behaviors, testing 3 hypotheses: that mildly severe abusive behaviors (e.g., verbal aggression, emotional manipulation) are more common than severe ones (e.g., physical violence, threats); that physical violence co-occurs with both mildly severe and severe abuse; and that mildly sever

Nurses need to understand the theoretic debates that attempt to explain why men batter women. Nurses can participate more effectively in preventing and reducing the incidence of physical violence directed against women in intimate relationships. A raised feminist consciousness will expand the nurse's repertoire of interventions to assist in the identification and treatment of victims.

This study examined battered women's cognitive schema in relation to their cognitions about violence (i.e., the "meaning" attached to the violence), post-traumatic reactions to violence, and sexual victimization histories. Seventy-two battered women seeking help from an outpatient family violence clinic were subjects. The meaning of the violence (e.g., expectations of recurrent violence and of severe/lethal violence, causal attribution) was found to explain variance in cognitive schemata about SAFETY, SELF, AND OTHER (McCann and Pearlman, 1990a). All measures of cognitive schemata were signifi

Twelve women, imprisoned for killing their abusive male partners, were interviewed to determine factors present in battering relationships that end in homicide. Threats to kill made by the abuser, daily alcohol use by the man, and the presence of a firearm in the home existed in the majority of these relationships. Psychological abuse (e.g., enforced isolation, humiliation, and degradation) was perceived as more devastating than physical abuse. Although an escalation in the severity and frequency of violence, the occurrence of sexual abuse, and women's suicidal threats were also present, subje

Participants (N = 126) read one of four scenarios depicting an incident of child physical abuse inflicted by the father. Scenarios varied history of wife abuse (present vs. absent) and severity of child abuse (battering vs. death). Overall, the father was held highly responsible. Greater maternal culpability was assigned when a history of wife abuse was present. The degree to which the mother should have been able to predict the incident of child abuse and maternal responsibility were mitigated when the abuse resulted in the death of her child. Perceptions of maternal psychological stability w

The current study assessed observational data of parenting in 95 battered women and their school-aged children's behavioral adjustment and analyzed them within an ecological framework. Results indicated that maternal experience of psychological and physical abuse predicts maternal warmth, but not maternal authority-control, over and above ontogenic and exosystemic factors. In addition, maternal experience of psychological abuse and maternal authority-control predicted children's observed behavior, over and above child characteristics. An ecological framework for understanding the effects of do

A one month study of the surgical and psychiatric service of a university hospital emergency room identified thirty-seven women coming for treatment as a result of physical abuse. Thirty-three of the thirty-seven women presented at the surgical services are represented 3.8 per cent of surgical admissions in the emergency room. These women came from all ages, social and ethnic groups. They usually presented with contusions or other injuries to the head and neck. The majority would not accept psychiatric treatment but were willing to discuss the problem with the emergency room physician if encou

OBJECTIVE: Assistance must be available to abused women where they seek help. This study identified victims of partner abuse and asked them to indicate where they sought help when battered. The characteristics of acute battering incidents were also investigated.
METHODS: Consecutive women, ages 19 to 65, were recruited when they came to 10 emergency departments in two cities. Women were excluded if the following criteria existed: a language barrier, serious illness, or inability to separate subjects from accompanying persons.
RESULTS: Of 4448 women who completed the questionnaire, 37% acknow

Narrative length and speech rate of traumatic recollections have been previously associated with different emotions and adjustment trajectories after trauma. However, the evidence is limited and the results are mixed. The present study aimed to evaluate length (i.e., word count) and speech rate (i.e., words per minute) in narratives of events with different valence (i.e., neutral, positive, and negative/traumatic) by 50 battered women (trauma group) and 50 non-traumatized women (controls). The results showed that traumatic narratives by the trauma group were longer than those by the control gr

In this paper, differential psychopathological consequences in battered women according to age were analysed in a sample of 148 victims seeking psychological treatment in a Family Violence Centre. The younger victims exposed to intimate partner violence suffered more often from physical violence and were at higher risk for their lives than the older ones. The prevalence rate of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was higher (42%) in the younger victims than in the older ones (27%). Likewise, younger victims were affected by more depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem than the older ones. T

Domestic violence is a widespread problem in our society that has not been extensively studied using psychological assessment tools. In this investigation, the psychological functioning of battered women in transition was examined through the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2). Thirty-one women (M age = 30 years, M education = 11.5 years) were evaluated as residents in a confidential shelter operated by Women Against Abuse. All subjects were asked to complete the MMPI-2 as well as information on their history of length, severity, and types of abuse (i.e., physica

Children exposed to interparental violence have been characterized by an array of psychological problems, but findings regarding the precise nature of these problems have been inconsistent. This study used cluster analysis to determine whether distinct patterns of adjustment could be identified in 228 8- to 14-year-old children residing in battered women's shelters. Five such patterns emerged: multiproblem-externalizing, multiproblem-internalizing, externalizing, mild distress, and no problems reported. This solution was cross-validated in independent halves of the sample and was similar for b

The present study focused on the emotional and physical health problems of battered women by comparing a sample of residents in shelters with a group of women in the community matched for family income, length of marriage, and number of children on the General Health Questionnaire. The results indicated that battered women report a significantly higher level of somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. These effects tended to be associated with other life stressors and children with serious behavior problems. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of assessing the needs of bat

We examined the effects of intimate violence on the physical and psychological health of women over time. Changes in levels of physical and psychological abuse, injuries, physical health symptoms, anxiety, and depression were assessed three times: immediately after exit from a domestic violence program and at 81/2- and 141/2-month follow-ups. Analyses showed a significant decline in abuse, physical health symptoms, anxiety, and depression over time. Longitudinal structural equation modeling demonstrated that ongoing abuse was significantly related to increased physical and psychological health

The present study examined differences in the amount and severity of spousal violence and posttraumatic stress symptoms between incarcerated battered women who killed/seriously assaulted their abusers and battered women incarcerated for other offenses. Additionally, several risk and buffering variables suggested by trauma research were tested to determine their ability to predict present posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology. Findings revealed that battered women who killed/seriously assaulted their batterers experienced more frequent and severe spousal abuse than those in the co

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a public health concern, and multiple types of IPV have been described. Women, like men, have various motives for committing intimate partner homicide. This issue of The Journal includes an article reviewing the use of a Battered Woman Syndrome (BWS) defense in American courts. The time was right for a BWS defense a generation ago when there was a lack of understanding of the reasonableness of a woman's action, but not at present. We review the inherent problems of having a gendered law, looking to infanticide acts, as examples. We discuss the validity of BWS

Since the 1970s, the state response to intimate partner violence (IPV) has increasingly become one of criminalization-particularly police intervention. Little is known, however, about marginalized women's experiences with the police within a context of intimate partner violence in Canada. Drawing on interviews with 90 battered immigrant women, this study examines which women contact the police, why some do not, and what characterizes their experiences when the police are involved in an IPV incident. This study demonstrates that while the women who called the police were demographically similar

In Coercive Control, Evan Stark calls on battered women's activists to reorient their understanding of abusive relationships. Rather than being primarily about physical violence, he maintains, domestic violence is better conceptualized as men's attempts to destroy women's autonomy and reinstate patriarchy in intimate relationships. His analysis suggests important changes to defending battered women in court, modifications to the kinds of support services the movement provides for battered women, and changes in the laws and law enforcement regarding battering. Stark also maintains that, to end
