Cimex lectularius (the "bedbug") is an insect that feeds nocturnally, taking a requisite blood meal from a sleeping human or other parasitized host. Immunological reactions to bedbug saliva vary, but typically, bites yield erythematous and pruritic papules. The face and distal extremities, areas uncovered by sleeping clothes or blankets, are preferentially involved. Until the late 1990s, bedbug infestations in the United States were declining. Resurgence is attributed to increased travel and resistance to insecticides. Although hepatitis or human immunodeficiency virus is not effectively trans

Bedbugs are a known household scourge that also have become an increasing problem in the corporate space. These pests have adapted to the office environment, finding new harborages in which to thrive and devising new ways to obtain blood meals during the day. Bedbugs pose a considerable public health problem, and managing the epidemic will require vigilance by health care professionals as well as patient education on prevention. We present the case of a 42-year-old man with treatment-refractory pruritic papules over the bilateral posterior arms that were attributed to a bedbug infestation at h

The significant resurgence of bedbugs in the past decade has been attributed to pesticide resistance, more frequent travel, lack of public awareness, and inadequate pest control programs. Bedbugs are obligate blood parasites (insect family Cimicidae). They can withstand a large range of temperatures but are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide. They typically feed just before dawn. Cutaneous reactions to bedbug bites can include macules, papules, wheals, vesicles, bullae, and nodules. Bites may be confused with other skin conditions. Bedbug bite reactions are typically self-limited and resol

BACKGROUND: A dramatic increase of reported bedbug (Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus) infestations has been observed worldwide over the past decade. Bedbug infestations have also been detected across a wide range of travel accommodations, regardless of their comfort and hygiene levels. Travelers are increasingly exposed to the risks of bedbug bites, infestation of personal belongings, and subsequent contamination of newly visited accommodations and their homes.
METHODS: We searched Medline publications via the PubMed database. National bedbug recommendations, textbooks, newspapers, and

Scabies and bedbugs are two emerging ectoparasitic infections reported in crowded areas, including hospitals. Skin involvement is the main presenting initial manifestation for both infections, and the diagnosis is yet challenging for both. Topical permethrin is considered the first-line therapy for scabies except for crusted scabies which is mainly treated with oral ivermectin. To the contrary, treatment of bedbugs is mainly symptomatic. Avoiding close contact, early diagnosis and treatment of infected persons as well as decontamination of the involved environment play an essential role in con

Bedbugs, mites, and scabies are ectoparasites that commonly affect humans. Bedbugs (Cimex species) were once rare in the United States but are now common. They cause intensely pruritic lesions on areas of exposed skin. The bites are highly allergenic and can cause asthma exacerbations or anaphylaxis. Management of bedbug bites involves symptomatic relief of itching and dealing with patient anxiety. Identification and elimination of infestation are most important. Another ectoparasite of concern is lice (Pediculus and Pthirus species), which causes head, body, and pubic infestations. Patients c

PURPOSE: The history and life cycle of bedbugs, the identification and supportive treatment of bedbug bites, and the eradication and prevention of bedbug infestations are reviewed.
SUMMARY: Cimex lectularius, known commonly as the bedbug, is a growing problem in the United States. While the bedbug population declined between the 1950s and the late 20th century, recent increases in international travel and immigration, the banning of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, and insecticide resistance have caused a resurgence of bedbug infestations. Infestations can be identified based on clinical pres

Currently there is a rise in bedbugs seen in schools. The wingless, blood-sucking insects can arrive at school via student book bags, student clothing, or other personal items. If a student presents in the health office with a bite mark, the school nurse will need to differentiate between a bedbug bite and other insect bites, such as fleas, spiders, and scabies in order to provide the most accurate and appropriate intervention measures. This article will further provide school nurses with information about the etiology of the bedbug, mode of transmission, and eradication options for the school

Parasitic agents determine some of the most common skin disorders. Although well known, they could present different manifestations or be modified by individual or external factors that make their diagnosis or treatment difficult. This review will discuss some of the most prevalent parasitic infections, scabies, and pediculosis and also mention reactions determined by contact with certain insects that, although rarely found, could induce important skin reactions.

IMPORTANCE: Scabies, bedbug, and body lice infestations are caused by organisms that live on or in the skin, on clothing, or in the environment and commonly cause pruritus and rash. In 2021, approximately 622 million incident cases of scabies occurred globally. Data on bedbug infestations are limited. Body lice prevalence ranges from 4.1% to 35% among persons experiencing homelessness worldwide.
OBSERVATIONS: Scabies is caused by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that burrow into the epidermis. Transmission primarily occurs from prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an individual who has an infestation

There is an ongoing need for safe and effective anti-bedbug compounds. Here, we tested the toxicity of three antimicrobial agents against bedbugs when administered orally. We reveal that doxycycline has direct insecticidal activity at 250 μg/ml (0.025%) that is particularly strong against immature bedbugs and appears to be independent of antimicrobial activity. Future studies to determine the mechanisms behind this property could be useful for the development of orally active insecticides or anti-bedbug therapeutics.

Bedbugs are on the rise in urban populations across the world, perhaps reflecting the ban on the use of organophosphates in many countries worldwide. They are flat obligate haematophagous insects, preferring humans, and as a consequence the bedbug bites lack toxins and can often go unnoticed for some time. Bites can, however, cause weals, purpura, petechiae, vesicles, pustules, papular urticaria, localized infection and rarely anaphylaxis. Infestations have to be confirmed by finding the bugs, usually around the bed of the person being bitten. Eradication usually requires a combination of phys

A 21-year-old man had painful lesions on his scrotum for 4 days. Recently, bed bugs were discovered in the student accommodation of his girlfriend. We also observed vesicular lesions on the patient's buttock. PCR on swab specimens was negative for herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, but positive for varicella zoster virus.

When even one bedbug is discovered in the intensive care unit (ICU), it becomes an environmental emergency for the hospital and may pose an economic threat, since rooms and other support space must be taken out of service to permit appropriate eradication of these unwanted pests. Furthermore, the presence of the pests can create a public relations nightmare for your facility when news headlines alarmingly announce, "bedbugs have been found in a local healthcare facility." Patients and their families, staff members, and others who visit the hospital suddenly feel threatened by these little pest

Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius and C. hemipterus) have reemerged as a major public health problem around the world. Their bites cause various skin lesions as well as discomfort and anxiety. Their role as potential vectors of various infectious agents is discussed. Accordingly, all suspected cases of bedbug infestations need to be documented thoroughly, with an unequivocal identification of the arthropods involved, if any are present. Although morphological identification is easily and quickly performed by entomologists or professionals, it can be challenging otherwise. Also, distinguishing Cimex l

Following the evolution of internal fertilization, the female reproductive tract became the site of two major reproductive interactions, the insemination response and the long-term postmating response. However, our understanding of these two responses is hampered by the fact they coincide in most animals. Traumatic insemination in the common bedbug (Cimex lectularius) presents a unique opportunity to disentangle these effects because females have evolved a novel organ, the mesospermalege, which is the site of insemination, while sperm do not arrive in the reproductive tract until several hours

Nitrophorins are heme proteins used by blood feeding insects to deliver nitric oxide (NO) to a victim, leading to vasodilation and antiplatelet activity. Cimex lectularius (bedbug) nitrophorin (cNP) accomplishes this with a cysteine ligated ferric (Fe(III)) heme. In the acidic environment of the insect's salivary glands, NO binds tightly to cNP. During a blood meal, cNP-NO is delivered to the feeding site where dilution and increased pH lead to NO release. In a previous study, cNP was shown to not only bind heme, but to also nitrosate the proximal cysteine, leading to Cys-NO (SNO) formation. S

In recent decades, the world has witnessed a remarkable resurgence of bedbugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae). Although populations of the common bedbug, Cimex lectularius L., expanded in temperate regions of its original distribution, the tropical bedbug, C. hemipterus (F.), increased its abundance in warmer regions, where it also had been historically distributed. However, C. hemipterus has recently been observed to be expanding to other areas, e.g. North Australia, Middle East, the United States and Russia. In other parts of Europe, few sporadic and ephemeral introductions of C. hemipterus were reco
