Allergy in beekeepers.

Beekeepers represent a high-risk group for allergic disorders. They are affected by beestings but only a very limited fraction of the population develops severe anaphylactic symptoms. On the other hand several beekeepers have slight anaphylactic symptoms when they start working. Immunologically they are like "spontaneously desensitized subjects". They often have bee-venom specific IgE and all of them have very high titers of bee-venom specific IgG. Beekeepers may present an atopic sensitization to bee-hive dust and develop asthma and rhinitis. Finally, they may present a contact dermatitis to

Beekeeper' arthropathy.

An acute inflammatory arthritis of unknown cause has been described in beekeepers in relation to their work with the hives. We present the case of a beekeeper who, after a bee sting, developed arthritis of the interphalangeal joint of the first finger of his left hand. Although the subacute clinical course and the magnetic resonance imaging findings required the differential diagnosis with an infectious process, the rest of the laboratory tests. other imaging studies and the course, together with a history of a similar episode a few years earlier on a finger of the other hand after a bee sting

Contact allergy to propolis in beekeepers.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to propolis seems to be rare and little is known about it. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to survey a subset of affected beekeepers to determine aspects such as time of onset of disease, comorbidity, and possible methods of prevention. METHODS: With the help of two German journals for beekeepers we contacted 41 beekeepers with propolis allergy. They were sent a questionnaire which assessed several aspects of the disease and was based on the current literature. RESULTS: 70.7% returned our questionnaire and had clear signs of propolis allergy with positive testing by

Cancer mortality among beekeepers.

Carcinogenic effects of bee venom were evaluated in a mortality study of 580 occupationally exposed beekeepers. The subjects were identified through obituary notices published between 1949 and 1978 in three journals of the U.S. beekeeping industry. Death certificates of beekeepers were examined for causes of mortality, and proportionate mortality ratios were compared with those for the general U.S. population. Beekeepers had a slightly lower than expected fraction of deaths from cancer. The deficit of lung cancers in male beekeepers was significant (p less than 0.05) and may indicate that fewe

Clinical and immunological studies of beekeepers.

Thirty-four beekeepers were interviewed and their blood assayed for the presence of antibodies reacting with bee venom, bee venom phospholipase A (PLA), and whole bee body extract. Following a bee sting, most beekeepers experienced only minimal local tissue reaction. Their serum contained high levels of total antibodies (primarily IgG) reacting to bee venom and phospholipase A. These antibody titres correlated with the frequency of bee stings. Bee venom and PLA specific IgE antibodies were present in serum of some beekeepers. Beekeepers who had experienced allergic reactions were characterized

Contact allergy to propolis in beekeepers.

BACKGROUND: Some toothpastes, cosmetics and ointments contain propolis, a bee product, and it is increasingly popular as a dietary supplement. Although propolis is known to cause contact allergy, there have been no studies of the prevalence of this. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of contact allergy to propolis in beekeepers and any relationship between propolis allergy and environmental and physical and mental health characteristics in this group. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A specially developed instrument which included a validated questionnaire on emotional stability w

Allergy to bee venom in beekeepers in Germany.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bee venom allergy in German beekeepers, to explore risk factors for bee venom allergy in this group, and to determine which factors best predicted severe reactions. METHODS: A questionnaire incorporating 2 instruments on beekeepers' physical and mental health and working practice was included in 3 German beekeeping journals. A reference group also completed the questionnaire. Simple descriptive methods, bivariate correlation, cross-tabulation, 1-way analysis of variance, and stepwise discriminant analysis were used to analyze

Avoiding the tragedies of parasite tolerance in Darwinian beekeeping.

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize

Bees for development: Brazilian survey reveals how to optimize stingless beekeeping.

Stingless bees are an important asset to assure plant biodiversity in many natural ecosystems, and fulfill the growing agricultural demand for pollination. However, across developing countries stingless beekeeping remains an essentially informal activity, technical knowledge is scarce, and management practices lack standardization. Here we profited from the large diversity of stingless beekeepers found in Brazil to assess the impact of particular management practices on productivity and economic revenues from the commercialization of stingless bee products. Our study represents the first large

Psoriasiform contact dermatitis due to propolis in a beekeeper.

BACKGROUND: More than 250 cases of allergic contact dermatitis due to propolis have been described. A few of these occurred in beekeepers. OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of psoriasiform dermatitis caused by propolis in a beekeeper who thought that his lesions were related to honeybee stings. METHODS: A 45-year-old beekeeper experienced hand dermatitis for the past 5 years. He believed that the lesions occurred and worsened when he was stung by honeybees. He was prescribed topical corticosteroids several times, but because he was stung frequently, the drugs never helped control the lesions. In

Clinical and immunologic survey in beekeepers in relation to their sensitization.

Beekeepers often present allergic symptoms and represent a natural and experimental model of anaphylaxis and specific immunotherapy. Two hundred BKs were investigated. Both allergic and nonallergic subjects were selected very carefully in terms of immunologic status and exposure to bee stings. They were surveyed by a questionnaire, the titration of total serum IgE, and bee venom-specific IgE and IgG. Skin tests to HBV were performed in 176 subjects. Skin test sensitivity to HBV and allergic symptoms were significantly (p less than 0.0001) related to the estimated number of annual stings. BKs d

Acute kidney failure from ingestion of "wood bleach" beekeeping miticide.

Wood bleach is >95 % oxalic acid formulation used off-label as a miticide for Varroa mites by hobbyist beekeepers. Wood bleach (oxalic acid) ingestions are poorly documented in the medical literature. A 46-year-old man presented to the emergency department nauseated and vomiting after accidentally ingesting "bleach and grain ethanol intended for use in beekeeping." Initial evaluation was reported to the regional Poison Center as a creatinine concentration of 2.46 mg/dL (217 μmol/L); he was otherwise well. He was volume resuscitated and discharged home without further evaluation. Four days late

Drugs and products in beekeeping: Efficacy and perspectives of natural alternatives.

Honeybee health is a key factor in sustainable apiculture, with the most significant colony losses attributed to the mite Varroa destructor and microsporidia of the genus Nosema spp. The aim of this review article is to summarise current knowledge on the use of pharmaceuticals and preparations in the prevention and treatment of these diseases and to highlight promising alternatives to synthetic acaricides. Commonly used active substances such as amitraz and pyrethroids show decreased efficacy in many countries due to the development of resistance. Therefore, organic acids (formic, oxalic, and

The natural history of Apis-specific IgG and IgG4 in beekeepers.

BACKGROUND: Most published studies on changes of specific IgG or its subclasses as a response to stimuli by allergens have been performed on patients under immunotherapy. There are few reports analysing the response to immunoglobulins in patients exposed to allergens in their natural habitats. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to discover the natural history of Apis specific IgG (IgG-ap) and IgG4 (IgG4-ap) levels in beekeepers from the Canary Islands. METHODS: We studied 242 beekeepers (Bks). We used a questionnaire and measured total IgE and seric Apis specific IgE (IgE-ap), IgG-ap and Ig

[Assessment of hypersensitivity to honey-bee venom in beekeepers by skin tests].

BACKGROUND: Beekeepers are exposed to frequent honey-bee stings, and have the risk to develop hypersensitivity to bee venom, but long-term exposure can induce immune tolerance in them. Up to 30% of beekeepers show positive skin tests with honey-bee venom. The prevalence of systemic reactions to bee stings in beekeepers is from 14% to 42%. OBJECTIVE: To know the prevalence of hypersensitivity to honeybee venom in Mexican beekeepers and non-beekeepers by the use of skin tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 139 beekeepers and a group of 60 non-beekeeper volunteers had a history and physical

Risk assessment in determining systemic reactivity to honeybee stings in beekeepers.

BACKGROUND: The use of laboratory tests as a reliable method for risk assessment in determining the systemic reactivity of beekeepers to honeybee stings has proven unsatisfactory. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of a structured questionnaire as a supplement to bee venom-specific IgE data in the prediction of systemic sting reactions of 78 beekeepers to honeybee stings. METHODS: Participants in previous studies completed a questionnaire concerning potential risk factors of systemic sting reactions. Serum bee venom IgE was measured by CAP-RAST. Skin prick tests w

Peasant perception of beekeeping constraints and practices in large honey production areas in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, agricultural landscapes have been profoundly modified due to the intensification of agriculture, therefore leading to significant disturbances in all components of biodiversity. A survey on the knowledge of beekeeping realities and the use of phytosanitary products in areas of high honey production in Burkina Faso was carried out. Beekeeping realities design the state of beekeeping activities in the study localities. METHODS: The objective of this survey was to characterize Beekeeping operations and to assess the level of knowledge of beekeepers on the effects o

Fragments of illness: The Death of a Beekeeper as a literary case study of cancer.

The first decisive steps of medicine towards becoming a science in its present shape happen to coincide with "the rise of the novel" in the eighteenth century. Before this well known and in our days still growing scientific specialization of medicine, the connections between literature and medicine were both many and close. By reading and analyzing a contemporary novel, The Death of a Beekeeper by the Swedish author Lars Gustafsson (1978), this article is an attempt to explore to which extent a fictional narrative about a unique case of cancer may illuminate challenges associated with the expe
