Joint attention in autism: A narrative review of assessment techniques from behavioral observation to artificial intelligence.

Joint attention (JA), the shared focus between two individuals on an object or event, plays a pivotal role in social communication, cognitive development, and language acquisition during early childhood. However, JA is frequently impaired in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), highlighting the need for precise assessment to support early diagnosis and intervention. This narrative review explores the evolution of JA assessment methods, tracing the shift from human-mediated techniques to technology-driven approaches, including artificial intelligence (AI). The study analyzes research i

Direct Observation of Adhesion and Mechanical Behavior of a Single Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) Fiber Using an In Situ Technique for Tissue Engineering.

Nanometer- and submicrometer-sized fiber have been used as scaffolds for tissue engineering, because of their fundamental load-bearing properties in synergy with mechano-transduction. This study investigates a single biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) fiber's load-displacement behavior utilizing the nanoindentation technique coupled with a high-resolution in situ imaging system. It is demonstrated that a maximum force of ∼3 μN in the radial direction and displacement of at least 150% of fiber diameter should be applied to acquire the fiber's macroscopic mechanical properties fo

Assessment of the components of observed chronic pain behavior: the Checklist for Interpersonal Pain Behavior (CHIP).

This article describes the development of the Checklist for Interpersonal Pain Behavior (CHIP), an observation scale which assesses overt pain behavior. The study is an extension of an earlier study in which the dimensions and components of observed chronic pain behavior were examined. A broad definition of pain behavior is chosen (interpersonal pain behavior), namely the interaction between the pain patient and his/her direct environment. The list of pain behaviors, taken from the earlier study, has been transformed into a 78-item global rating scale to be used by nurses to quantify observed

Psychiatric Observational Assessment of Young Children.

Psychiatric assessment of young children differs from that of older children and adolescents. It requires flexibility and strong observational skills, an understanding of the child's caregiver relationships and the environment from a developmental perspective, as well as critical cultural and social considerations. This article outlines practical aspects for structuring the evaluation and the physical setting. It provides a brief overview of clinical tools that may be useful in providing a comprehensive assessment.

Establishing the feasibility of direct observation in the assessment of tics in children with chronic tic disorders.

Behavior analysis has been at the forefront in establishing effective treatments for children and adults with chronic tic disorders. As is customary in behavior analysis, the efficacy of these treatments has been established using direct-observation assessment methods. Although behavior-analytic treatments have enjoyed acceptance and integration into mainstream health care practices for tic disorders (e.g., psychiatry and neurology), the use of direct observation as a primary assessment tool has been neglected in favor of less objective methods. Hesitation to use direct observation appears to

Evaluating University Student Classroom Engagement, Reflective Expression, and Prosocial Intention Using Behavioral Observation and Learning Analytics.

To address the need for multidimensional assessments of student involvement beyond traditional metrics, this protocol describes a structured approach for evaluating classroom engagement, reflective expression, learning analytics activity, and prosocial intention in undergraduate courses. The protocol combines interval-based behavioral observation, weekly structured reflective writing, de-identified learning-management-system records, and a pre/post prosocial-intention questionnaire. The revised procedures provide a reproducible behavioral coding model, reflective-expression rubric with score e

Understanding Is Key: An Analysis of Factors Pertaining to Trust in a Real-World Automation System.

OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore the role of factors pertaining to trust in real-world automation systems through the application of observational methods in a case study from the railway sector. BACKGROUND: Trust in automation is widely acknowledged as an important mediator of automation use, but the majority of the research on automation trust is based on laboratory work. In contrast, this work explored trust in a real-world setting. METHOD: Experienced rail operators in four signaling centers were observed for 90 min, and their activities were coded into five mutually exclusive categ

Machine Learning to Detect Vocal Stereotypy: Improving Duration-Based Measures.

Direct observation is a process central to behavior science, but its implementation may be challenging in some contexts (e.g., classrooms, homes). One potential solution to improve the feasibility of conducting behavioral observation and measurement involves machine learning. Using previously published data, we developed and tested novel models to automatically measure the duration of vocal stereotypy in eight children with autism. In addition to accuracy and the kappa statistic, we examined session-by-session correlations between values measured by machine learning and those recorded by a hum

Measuring pain in dogs and cats using structured behavioural observation.

The contemporary approach to pain measurement in people and animals seeks to measure the affective (emotional) component of the pain experience using structured questionnaires with formal scoring methodology. Chronic pain has wide-ranging impacts which affects the quality of life (QOL) of the individual, whether that is a person or an animal. Accordingly instruments to measure chronic pain are designed to measure its impact on QOL and are called health-related quality of life (HRQL) instruments. In veterinary science instruments to measure pain are based on behavioural observation by the veter

Effects of olfactory bulbectomy on social behavior of male guinea pigs (Cavia procellus).

Effects of olfactory bulbectomy on social behavior in male guinea pigs were studied. Both brief-exposure pairing techniques and a group-living observation period were employed to test for disruption. During short-term testing sessions bulbectomized animals courted females less than but mounted them as frequently as control subjects. While the groups did not differ in fighting behavior during short-term tests, control subjects scent-marked more frequently. Subsequently, animals were observed as same-treatment pairs living continuously with females, and behavior was sampled over a 3-wk period. U

Phase Behavior of Potential Drug Delivery Systems, PolycaprolactoneNonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug in a Pressurized Carbon Dioxide Medium.

Although high-pressure technologies are widely used, for example, in the polymer and pharmaceutical industries, measuring phase equilibria in high-pressure media is still challenging, especially for multicomponent systems. Although the most reliable methods in solid-liquid-(-gas) equilibrium measurements, also providing additional information, are high-pressure differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transitiometry, the most common techniques for detecting solid-liquid phase transitions in pressurized media are visual observation-based methods. In this research, the melting behavior of pot

In situ single particle characterization of the themoresponsive and co-nonsolvent behavior of PNIPAM microgels and silica@PNIPAM core-shell colloids.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels and PNIPAM colloidal shells attract continuous strong interest due to their thermoresponsive behavior, as their size and properties can be tuned by temperature. The direct single particle observation and characterization of pure, unlabeled PNIPAM microgels in their native aqueous environment relies on imaging techniques that operate either at interfaces or in cryogenic conditions, thus limiting the observation of their dynamic nature. Liquid Cell (Scanning) Transmission Electron Microscopy (LC-(S) TEM) imaging allows the characterization of materi

Human behavior alignment to improve the robustness of deep neural networks.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are known to produce erroneous results under real-world noisy inputs, presenting a major bottleneck to their use in applications where lives, safety, or significant resources are at stake. It has been commonly observed that humans are highly resilient to the noisy inputs that are challenging for DNNs. However, very few efforts have translated this observation into techniques to improve DNN robustness. We hypothesize that statistically aligning DNNs to human behavior during training could improve robustness. Based on this insight, we propose BrainTrain, a framework t

Selecting a Method of Case Identification to Estimate the Involvement of People With Mental Illnesses in the Criminal Justice System: A Research Note.

Arrest and incarceration are a pervasive reality for people with mental illnesses. Wide variation, however, exists in the estimates of the percentage of people with mental illnesses who become involved in the criminal justice system. Researchers and practitioners need a variety of methods in their toolbox to maximize their ability to identify mental illness depending on available resources and needs. Yet, the benefits and costs of utilizing these different approaches have yet to be explored in the criminal justice literature. To begin exploring the utility of the different methods of case iden

Dual-informant clinical outcome assessment in the inclusive orchestra: measurement architecture for neurodevelopmental disorders prior to empirical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Systematic behavioral observation in a group requires the rater to know when a target behavior could have occurred. In an inclusive orchestra the notated part and the conductor's cues generate that occasion outside the participant, before the session. This pre-implementation study builds a dual-informant clinical outcome assessment architecture on that property, for adolescents and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS: The architecture comprises two context-specific candidate instruments, each of five seven-item domains. Working independently, two psychologists will s
