Behavioral medicine. Broadening the interface between medicine and behavioral science.

The work of psychotherapists who have a cognitive-behavioral orientation and are trained in time-limited, focused psychotherapy has proved to be beneficial in the setting of a comprehensive medical and health maintenance organization. Group interventions that deal with relaxation, social skills, depression, agoraphobia, smoking cessation, problem drinking, weight modification, and Type A behavior, to mention a few, are conducted on an ongoing basis, allowing staff to treat large numbers of people in a time-efficient and cost-effective way. These groups also help the staff to provide a coordina

Behavioral control of medicine compliance.

This study examined the effectiveness of several behavioral techniques on compliance of college students taking vitamin C on q.i.d. regimen. Compliance was assessed by a new technique using a variation of the urine tracer procedure designed specifically for this study. Subjects were provided vitamin C tablets, with three tablets per week containing phenazopyridine, a drug that produces a bright red-orange urine discoloration. Subjects were requested to indicate when urine discolorations occurred, and compliance was assessed by comparing the time of their report to the time predicted on the bas

Behavioral medicine approaches to gastrointestinal disorders.

Behavioral research in gastroenterology has grown exponentially over the last decade. Controlled studies demonstrate that psychotherapy, stress management, and hypnosis are effective for irritable bowel syndrome; and behavioral treatments are preferred over medical management for some types of fecal incontinence and vomiting. For peptic ulcer disease, interest in behavioral treatments has declined. However, a new syndrome, functional dyspepsia, is now recognized, in which ulcerlike symptoms occur without ulcer and frequently in association with psychological symptoms. For inflammatory bowel di

Biofeedback and behavioral medicine: an overview.

Biofeedback is a behavioral method of achieving or enhancing voluntary control of physiological processes. Basic studies indicate that a variety of autonomic nervous system and other internal bodily changes can be modified with the method. It has been shown that specific responses and patterns of responses can be controlled. Biofeedback appears to be a promising method of altering symptoms of psychophysiological and medical disorders, e.g., high blood pressure, vascular changes in migraine, neuromuscular abnormalities, and cardiac arrhythmias. This research has stimulated a renewed interest in

Behavioral medicine approaches to somatoform disorders.

This article reviews the research evidence for the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for somatoform disorders. Randomized controlled studies support the efficacy of individual CBT for the treatment of hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and undifferentiated somatoform disorders including medically unexplained symptoms, chronic fatigue syndrome, and noncardiac chest pain, and group CBT for the treatment of BDD and somatization disorder. On the basis of this review of the existing research and a theoretical model of the processes involved in somatoform disorders, the au

Translating behavioral medicine evidence to public policy.

Behavioral medicine has made significant contributions to our understanding of how to prevent disease and improve health. However, social and environmental factors continue to have a major influence on health in ways that will be difficult to combat on a population level without concerted efforts to scale interventions and translate the evidence into public health policies. Now is also the right time to increase our efforts to produce policy relevant research and partnerships that will maximize the chances that our evidence is taken to scale in ways that can influence population health broadly

Treatment efficacy in behavioral pediatric sleep medicine.

Behavioral interventions have been identified as the treatment of choice for many forms of pediatric sleep disturbance. We adopt criteria established by the Task Force on Promotion and Dissemination of Psychological Procedures (1996) to evaluate the literature base describing behavioral interventions for pediatric sleep disturbance. Three well-established interventions, one promising intervention and one probably efficacious intervention, have emerged for bedtime refusal and frequent nighttime awakenings. Only one intervention for sleep terrors and sleepwalking has sufficient empirical support

[Inpatient behavioral medicine in chronic skin diseases].

Behavioral medicine is a newer approach in the management of various diseases. In the last years, special programs have been developed for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis vulgaris and other chronic skin diseases. An increase in the patient's self-control could be achieved by optimizing the patient's skills in dealing with their skin disease. The article summarizes the principles and procedures of in-patient behavioral medicine, especially the strategies employed by dermatological training groups and psychotherapeutical groups to help the patient deal with their skin disorder.

Ferret Behavior Medicine.

Domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are common zoologic companion animals and display specific body language and vocalizations. Social interactions, play behavior, and resting periods are important keystone in domestic ferret behavior. Specific housing and environmental enrichment are recommended to preserve the expression of normal behavior and physiology in ferrets. Presence of abnormal behaviors, including aggression, urination and defecation outside the litter box, stereotypies, and absence of play behavior, should be carefully monitored by veterinarians and ferret owners to assess fe

Behavioral Medicine in Cholangiocarcinoma: Bridging the Gap Between Biology and Behavior.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is an aggressive malignant tumor with extremely poor prognosis, and its global incidence is increasing, posing a growing public health burden. Behavioral factors, such as diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, and psychological status, are closely associated with the development of CCA. This narrative review delves into the multidimensional burden of CCA, including psychological distress, symptom profiles, and socioeconomic impacts. It also summarizes evidence from related gastrointestinal cancers to explain the biological mechanisms through which lifes
