Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are core features of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. On one hand, behavioral symptoms in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can indicate an increased risk of progressing to dementia. On the other hand, mild behavioral impairment (MBI) in patients who usually have normal cognition indicates an increased risk of developing dementia. Whatever the cause, all dementias carry a high rate of NPI. These symptoms can be observed at any stage of the disease, may fluctuate over its course, are a leading cause of stress and overload for caregivers, and

As the complexity and heterogeneity of ET emerge, greater interest has been taken in the nonmotor manifestations of this disease. The fact that the motor manifestations reflect widespread anatomic pathology (e.g., cerebellum, basal ganglia) suggests that the nonmotor aspects might be a manifestation of an illness that affects multiple areas of the nervous system. Therefore, nonmotor aspects of the disease might reflect the presence of disease pathology in a particular area of the brain. Alternatively, nonmotor aspects could be the result of the tremor itself and the effects that it has on disa

Behavioral interventions can augment the effects of antipsychotic medication in alleviating hallucinations, delusions, and conceptual disorganization. Such interventions may be based on operant conditioning and reinforcement strategies and on training in coping skills. Reinforcement strategies have been used to decrease the rate of confused speech, delusional talk, and other psychotic behaviors, but they appear to have little effect on the subjective distress patients experience as a result of such symptoms. Strategies that teach patients skills for coping with psychotic symptoms include cogni

BACKGROUND: The Huntington's Disease Behavioral Questionnaire (HD-BQ) captures behavioral symptoms arising from cognitive, psychiatric, and functional domains. Recognizing the high prevalence of anosognosia in HD, the HD-BQ incorporates patient- and companion-reported versions.
OBJECTIVE: Examine the utility of the HD-BQ in capturing behavioral symptoms in HD.
METHODS: The HD-BQ was administered to 71 manifest HD patients and their companions, plus 71 healthy controls (HC). Differences in HD-BQ scores were examined using Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests.
RESULTS: HD patients r

Viral infections have a major impact on physiology and behavior. The clinical symptoms of human rotavirus and norovirus infection are primarily diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, but several other sickness symptoms, such as nausea, loss of appetite, and stress response are never or rarely discussed. These physiological and behavioral changes can be considered as having evolved to reduce the spread of the pathogen and increase the chances of survival of the individual as well as the collective. The mechanisms underlying several sickness symptoms have been shown to be orchestrated by the brain, spec

The prion diseases are rare neurodegenerative conditions that cause complex and highly variable neuropsychiatric syndromes, often with remarkably rapid progression. Prominent behavioral and psychiatric symptoms have been recognized since these diseases were first described. While research on such symptoms in common dementias has led to major changes in the way these symptoms are managed, evidence to guide the care of patients with prion disease is scarce. The authors review the published research and draw on more than 10 years' experience at the U.K. National Prion Clinic, including two large

Dementia, with loss of memory, cognitive abilities, and independent daily functioning, is increasing worldwide, related to an aging population. Currently, there is no curative treatment for dementia. Treatment of the frequently occurring behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) is partially effective and associated with significant side effects. Cannabinoids are lipophilic molecules acting on the CB1 end CB2 receptors, essential for main biological processes such as sleep, appetite, memory, and pain. Cannabinoids might have a positive impact on amyloid formation in Alzheimer's

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches to managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). We examine methods for assessment and evidence for interventions, focusing on recent findings and innovations. Finally, we recommend an algorithm for management of BPSD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Training of formal caregivers is the most effective intervention for BPSD; other non-pharmacological interventions are also beneficial. Antidepressants and antipsychotics remain a mainstay of pharmacological treatment for BPSD. There is limited evidence supporti

BACKGROUND: The significance of behavioral inhibition in the second year of life for the development of social phobia in later childhood was the incentive to explore whether maternal postnatal psychopathology is a predictor for behavioral inhibition in the offspring.
METHOD: 101 mother-infant pairs were recruited from local obstetric units and examined for maternal psychopathology by the Symptom Checklist and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale several times during the first postnatal year. Child behavioral inhibition was assessed at 14 months in a laboratory procedure.
RESULTS: Postpar

Dementia-related behavioral symptoms present a difficult management problem for caregivers and health care providers. The first step in the treatment of behavioral symptoms in the elderly should involve nonpharmacologic measures. This should include the exclusion of medication-induced dementia and delirium, which is an important consideration in the elderly owing to multiple medication use and alterations in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Other measures involve relatively simple environmental changes. If these are unsuccessful, pharmacologic management is often tried. Numerous concerns

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia frequently present behavioral and psychological symptoms as well as delirium. However, the association between these has received little attention from researchers and current knowledge in this area is limited. The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between delirium and behavioral symptoms of dementia (BSD).
METHODS: Participants were 155 persons with a diagnosis of dementia, 109 (70.3%) of whom were found delirious according to the Confusion Assessment Method. BSD were assessed using the Nursing Home Behavior Problem Scale.
RESULTS: Participa

Limited information is available regarding the incidence, nature, and treatment of behavioral problems in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A chart review of 57 outpatients with a diagnosis of AD was conducted to examine these issues. Thirty-three (58%) patients had significant behavioral symptomatology (most commonly delusions, nonspecific agitation, and diurnal rhythm disturbances). Twenty-seven were treated with thioridazine (10-250 mg/day), 15 (55.6%) of whom were judged to have a positive response (mean maximum dose = 55 mg/day). Information regarding the characteristic phenomenology of the behav

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare overgrowth genetic disease caused by intragenic mutations or microdeletions of the NSD1 gene located on chromosome 5q35. SoS population might present cognitive impairment and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics, with a worse profile in patients with microdeletion. Although patients with SoS are known to have impaired sleep habits, very little data are available. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders (SDs) in a pediatric cohort of patients with SoS and their correlation with neuropsychiatric profiles.
METHODS: We inc

Behavioral and psychological symptoms are commonly observed in a majority of demented patients at some time during the course of their illness. Many of these psychiatric manifestations, especially those related to mood, may be early expressions of dementia and/or mild cognitive impairment. The literature suggests that behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are an integral part of the disease process. The dissociation, in many cases, between BPSD and the rather linear decline in cognitive functions suggests that independent pathophysiological mechanisms give rise to these symp

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the prevalence of, or associations with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in developing countries.
METHODS: Individuals diagnosed as having dementia according to DSM-IV criteria (mild and moderate cases as defined by the Clinical Dementia Rating scale only), together with their main caregiver, were recruited from 21 centers in 17 developing countries. People with dementia were directly assessed with the Community Screening Interview for Dementia and the Geriatric Mental State Schedule (GMS); GMS data were processed by the AGECAT compute

INTRODUCTION: Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) results in decreased dystrophin with implications for mental health.
METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of neurodevelopmental, behavioral, and emotional symptoms and respective pharmacotherapies of 70 patients with BMD.
RESULTS: Fifty-four (77.1%) patients exhibited at least one symptom, and 19 (27.1%) patients exhibited four or more symptoms. The most prevalent symptoms were specific learning disabilities or special education needs (31.4%), inattention/hyperactivity (35.7%), language/speech delays (35.7%), and emotional or behavioral d

OBJECTIVE: To determine if behavioral symptoms in patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) were associated with degeneration of a ventral frontotemporal network.
METHODS: We used diffusion tensor imaging tractography to quantify abnormalities of the uncinate fasciculus that connects the anterior temporal lobe and the ventrolateral frontal cortex. Two additional ventral tracts were studied: the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus and the inferior longitudinal fasciculus. We also measured cortical thickness of anterior temporal and orbitofrontal regions interconnected by these tracts. T
