Head morphology of the ricefish, Oryzias latipes (Teleostei: Beloniformes).

The medaka, Oryzias latipes, is a model organism in experimental biology. Its ontogeny and osteology have been studied frequently, but no detailed description of its cranial anatomy exists. Based on manual dissections, histological slide sections, and 3D-reconstructions, we describe the anatomy of the jaw apparatus of O. latipes, focusing on musculature, connective tissue elements, and the nervous system. The soft tissue anatomy of the head of O. latipes is characterized by several derived characters that seem to be related to the modification of the upper jaw and a reduced mobility of its bon

New trematode species Lecithostaphylus halongi n. sp. (Zoogonidae, Microphalloidea) and Gymnotergestia strongyluri n. sp. (Fellodistomidae, Gymnophalloidea) from beloniform fishes in Vietnam.

In this study we described two new trematode species, Lecithostaphylus halongi n. sp. (Zoogonidae, Lecithostaphylinae) and Gymnotergestia strongyluri n. sp. (Fellodistomidae, Tergestiinae), on the basis of morphological and molecular data. Adult worms of these two species were collected from, respectively, Hemiramphus spp. (Hemiramphidae) and Strongylura strongylura (Belonidae) caught in the coastal waters of Vietnam. Adult worms of L. halongi n. sp. are morphologically close to Lecithostaphylus gibsoni Cribb, Bray & Barker, 1992 ex Abudefduf whitleyi from Heron Island and Lecithostaphylus dep

How to stay attached-Formation of the ricefish plug and changes of internal reproductive structures in the pelvic brooding ricefish, Oryzias eversi Herder et al. (2012) (Beloniformes: Adrianichthyidae).

Teleost fishes show an enormous diversity of parental care, ranging from no care to viviparity with maternal provisioning of embryos. External brooders carry their developing eggs attached to their bodies. This requires the formation of novel morphological structures to support attachment. The pelvic brooding ricefish Oryzias eversi evolved such a structure, called the "plug." The plug anchors attaching filaments from the fertilized eggs inside the female reproductive system, allowing the female to carry the embryos until hatching. Using histological sections and µ-computed tomography scanning

New species of Paracolpenteron n. gen. and Ancyrocephalus (Monogenea, Dactylogyridae) inhabiting the urinary bladder and gills of the Maya needlefish Strongylura hubbsi (Beloniformes, Belonidae) from Chiapas, Mexico.

Parasitological examination of the maya needlefish Strongylura hubbsi Collette (Belonidae) from the Rio Lacantún basin in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, Chiapas, Mexico showed that specimens were parasitized by two monogenean species in two different sites: Paracolpenteron hubbsii n. gen., n. sp in the urinary bladder and Ancyrocephalus chiapanensis n. sp in the gill lamellae. Paracolpenteron hubbsii differs from other dactylogyrid species without a haptoral anchor/bar complex infecting the urinary systems, gills and nasal cavities by the general morphology of hooks, a dextral vaginal op

Isopods infesting Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) host novel viruses, including reoviruses related to global pathogens, and opportunistically feed on humans.

Isopods infest fish worldwide, but their role as disease vectors remains poorly understood. Here, we describe infestation of Atlantic bonefish (Albula vulpes) in Belize with isopods in two of three locations studied, with infestation rates of 15 and 44%. Isopods fed aggressively, and infested fish showed missing scales and scars. Gross morphologic and molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed the isopods to cluster within the family Aegidae and to be most closely related to members of the genus Rocinela, which are globally distributed micro-predators of fish. Metagenomic analysis of 10 isopods

Conspecific injury raises an alarm in medaka.

In the late 1930s, Karl von Frisch reported that semiochemicals released upon injury, act as alarm substances (Schreckstoff) in fish. In Ostariophysi species, club cells in the epidermis are believed to contain cues related to alarm substance; however, the function of club cells, primarily as reservoirs of alarm substance has been debated. Here, I describe an alarm response in the Japanese rice fish Oryzias latipes (medaka), a member of the order Beloniformes. The response to alarm substance (Schreckreaction) in medaka is characterized by bouts of immobility and an increase in cortisol levels

Post-traumatic internal carotid aneurysms caused by needlefish: lessons from one success story.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating injuries caused by marine animals are rare, particularly those involving the needlefish (Belonidae), which can cause significant orbital and intracranial trauma due to its elongated, serrated jaws. This report details a unique case of a successful resolution of this type of injury in Mexico. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old girl sustained a penetrating injury to her right eye while fishing in the Usumacinta River when a needlefish's jaws became embedded in her eye socket. Imaging revealed a foreign body penetrating the cavernous sinus and internal carotid artery (ICA

Windsurfing hazard caused by needlefish.

Very amusing and entertaining for the traveler, marine activities in tropical countries can be dangerous. More and more trauma caused by hazardous marine animals have been reported in recent years in the world, after maritime accidents including water sports like windsurfing, kite surfing, swimming, diving, and injuries caused by sting or contact with a marine animal. Rays and stone-fish frequently cause trauma, but there are not many cases of injury by needlefish. This case reports a case of penetrating wound of the left foot caused by a Caribbean needlefish occurred during a session of winds

Traumatic Neck Injury: An Accidental Impalement by a Needlefish.

Encounters between marine animals and humans can result in critical injury and fatal complications. We highlight a 20-y-old male who sustained a penetrating injury to the neck as a result of impalement by needlefish (Tylosurus sp) while snorkeling. He sustained a penetrating injury in the posterior triangle of the neck. On presentation, he was stabilized and received empirical antibiotics, analgesia, and antitetanus toxoid injection before being transferred to a tertiary center. On presentation to the tertiary hospital, the patient was hemodynamically stable with no clinical evidence of injury

A new species of Prosorhynchoides Dollfus, 1929 (Digenea: Bucephalidae) from Xenentodon cancila Hamilton, 1822 in Mizoram, Northeast India.

Prosorhynchoides aspinosus n. sp., a new species of digenean trematode, is described based on morphological, ultrastructural and molecular data from the freshwater fish, Xenentodon cancila Hamilton, 1822, of Tuikum and Tuirial river in Mizoram, Northeast India. It differs from its congeners in the absence of tegumental spines and the length of cirrus sac. These unique morphological characteristics were further supported by the ultrastructural data showing distinct knob-like protrusions in the tegument. Each knob-like protrusion is without cutting plates or spines and appears granulated at high

A fishy eyelid injury.

A 9-year-old girl was reviewed by a tertiary ophthalmology service after being hit in her right upper eyelid by a fish whilst swimming. Initial wound exploration demonstrated fish scales in the wound. She was first treated conservatively with washout of the 5-mm wound and was discharged with oral ciprofloxacin. Five days later, the patient re-presented with a worsened ptosis due to periorbital swelling. Ultrasound of the upper lid demonstrated a foreign body in the upper lid. The patient was taken to theatre and, with the assistance of intraoperative ultrasound, the jaws of a needle fish were

Description of novel myxozoan and microsporidian parasites from cultured red seabream Pagrus major exhibiting mild scoliosis, with additional detection of the myxosporean in yellowback seabream Evynnis tumifrons.

Red seabream Pagrus major (Temminck & Schlegel, 1843) (Teleostei: Sparidae) farmed in Japan exhibited mild scoliosis, and myxosporean and microsporidian parasites were isolated from the brain and medulla oblongata of the diseased fish, respectively. Based on the morphological and molecular analyses, the myxosporean specimens were described as a new species, Myxobolus tai n. sp. (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae). The spore is oblong to oval in valvular view, with two pyriform polar capsules of slightly unequal size. Polar capsules are asymmetrically positioned relative to the major axis of the spore.
