The Bender-Gestalt Test: A Systematic Review.

The Bender-Gestalt test (Bender test), since its appearance, has been widely used to analyze visuomotor functions, perception and cognitive processes. However, it is often used in a variety of other contexts. The aim of this research is to study the use of the Bender test and the Bender-II, based on the results of studies conducted between 2013 and 2023. The search was carried out using inclusion and exclusion criteria and in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The databases consulted were Medline, Embase and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Lib

Utility of the Bender Gestalt Test for differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies from Alzheimer's disease in patients showing mild to moderate dementia.

AIMS: We examined the utility of the Bender Gestalt Test (BGT) for the differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) from Alzheimer's disease (AD), comparing BGT scores between DLB and AD patients showing mild to moderate dementia. METHODS: Eighteen DLB patients, 36 AD patients controlled by age, years of education, Clinical Dementia Rating and Mini Mental State Examination scores, and 21 nondemented elderly participants controlled by age and years of education were subjected to the BGT. Their BGT performances were scored according to the Pascal-Suttell method. RESULTS: The DLB group sh

The Bender Gestalt Test is useful for clinically diagnosing dementia with Lewy bodies: Analysis of its sensitivity, specificity, and clinical characteristics of the figure copy.

A previous study that evaluated the ability of the Bender Gestalt Test (BGT) to discriminate between dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggested that a total score of 98 is the optimal cutoff value for discriminating between these two diseases and that DLB tends to exhibit unique errors; i.e., "element deformation" and "gestalt destruction." The objectives of the present study were: (1) to examine the sensitivity and specificity of a total BGT score of 98 as a cutoff value in greater numbers of DLB patients than in the previous study, (2) to set a new cutoff value if

Bender Gestalt Recall as a measure of short-term visual memory in children and adolescents with psychotic and other severe disorders.

To investigate the short-term visual memory ability of children and adolescents with severe psychiatric disorders, 82 child and adolescent inpatients and day hospital patients in a state psychiatric hospital were administered the Bender Gestalt Test as part of a psychological assessment and then asked to reproduce the designs from memory. No significant differences were found between groups on either the Bender Gestalt Recall, or the WISC-III IQs and the Digit Span and Symbol Search subtests for Psychotic Disorders (Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Psychosis Not Otherwise Specified), A

Performance of children with and without learning disabilities on Canter's Background Interference Procedure and Koppitz's scoring system for the Bender test.

Performance of 66 children, 30 with and 36 without learning disabilities, in four ways using the Bender Visual-motor Gestalt Test was compared. First, the test with the standard Koppitz scoring procedure, second with the Canter Background Interference Procedure sheet using the standard Koppitz scoring procedure; third, the Bender test on a standard sheet of paper using Canter scoring procedure; and fourth, the Canter Background Interference Procedure (BIP) sheet using the Canter scoring procedure. The effectiveness of the Canter procedure was examined when scored with an age-appropriate normat

BIP-Bender protocols of learning disabled and regular education students.

20 learning disabled and 20 normal elementary school children took the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test twice, once under standard conditions and again using Background Interference Procedure paper. Based on Koppitz's scoring system, the disabled pupils did equally poorly on both modes but performed significantly worse than the normal children when given the standard Bender first. No other differences were found. Other scoring methods are suggested for investigation.

Neurocognitive functions in pediatric renal transplant patients.

Neurocognitive dysfunction is one of the major complications of chronic renal failure (CRF). Uremic state during CRF encompasses a wide spectrum of neurobehavioral and neurological disturbances. Recent studies showed that the pathophysiology of neurocognitive dysfunction in CRF is related to plasma levels of uremic solutes. Successful renal transplantation improves renal, metabolic, and endocrine functions and the quality of life. The aim of our study was to determine the state of neurocognitive function in pediatric renal transplant recipients. We prospectively performed a neurological examin

Concurrent validity of the Gardner Test of Visual-Motor Skills.

Scores on the Test of Visual-motor Skills, Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration, and Bender-Gestalt test were compared for a sample of 44 elementary school children referred for evaluation of learning disorders. While the tests shared common variance, the mean standard score on the Test of Visual-motor Skills was significantly lower than the means of the other two tests, suggesting caution in the clinical use of the new scale.

Long-term beneficial effects of dexamethasone on intellectual and neuropsychological outcome of children with pneumococcal meningitis.

A Substantial ratio of bacterial meningitis survivors suffers mild or serious intellectual and neuropsychological handicaps. We organized eighty subjects into three groups: 1) Pneumococcal meningitis (PM) who did not receive dexamethasone, 2) PM who received dexamethasone, 3) Other bacterial meningitis with different etiology. All subjects underwent Bender Visual Motor Gestalt test and age-appropriate Intelligence quotient (IQ) tests. The mean full-scale IQ scoring fell within normal range (90+/-17) in the post-meningitic cohort. There was no statistical difference between two pneumococcal gro

Constructional apraxia as a function of lesion locus and size in patients with focal brain damage.

Patients with penetrating missile wounds confined to one of the four brain quadrants were evaluated to determine the incidence and severity of constructional apraxia. The visual constructive tasks used were the WAIS Block Designs subtest and the Bender Gestalt (reproduction) Test. Estimates of lesion size were used to investigate the effect of this factor on constructional ability. Patients with right posterior lesion tended to perform least adequately in general, although significant differences were obtained only for the Bender Gestalt Test. The effect for lesion laterality was greater than

[Indicators of organic brain damage in psychological tests and the results of computerized tomography (CT) of the brain of patients with bipolar disorder].

Computerized tomography of the head and psychological evaluation by use the WAIS, Benton Gestalt Test, and L. Bender battery was performed in 32 bipolar patients. CT revealed structural changes in 90% of subjects while only 47% of patients showed organic features in psychological evaluation. No significant correlations were found between the character and severity of changes in psychological tests, and the abnormalities found in CT. Practical implications of applied investigations were discussed.

Defective neuromotor and cognitive ability in iodine-deficient schoolchildren of an endemic goiter region in Sicily.

Visual perceptual integrative motor ability was investigated in 719 6- to 12-yr-old, presumably normal, primary schoolchildren living in 2 iodine-deficient endemic goiter areas in Sicily, identified on the basis of the presence (area A) or absence (area B) of endemic cretinism, by administrating the Bender Gestalt test. All of these clinically euthyroid schoolchildren were also examined neurologically by an investigator unaware of the result of the Bender test. Ninety-nine (13.76%) schoolchildren were found to be defective by the Bender test; this prevalence was significantly higher than that

[A case report of organic solvent abuse with amotivational syndrome].

We investigated an organic solvent abuser who developed amotivational syndrome employing neuropsychological examination (Rorschach test, Bender Gestalt test and Benton visual retention test), electroencephalography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The patient manifested a disability to maintain a goal-orient mental activity, immature reality testing and poor set shifting, which suggest frontal lobe dysfunction, as we have reported before in neuropsychological examination. In this case, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) a

Comparison of scores on two visual-motor tests for children referred for learning or adjustment difficulties.

93 students 6 to 11 yr. old and referred for evaluation because of learning or adjustment difficulties by their classroom teachers were administered Beery's Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration and Kopitz's version of the Bender-Gestalt test. Previous research with retarded samples indicated the two tests were highly correlated while one study using normal subjects yielded significant differences between the tests. The present study indicated significant mean differences between the tests and significant but moderate correlations between the measures for each of three age ranges betw

Study of psychiatric consequences of closed head injury at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

This was a study to compare the psychiatric consequences of closed head injury (CHI) in 37 patients with 39 demographically similar patients with fractured lower limb injury (FLLI), aged 16-55 years. The outcome measures were the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised, the Bender Gestalt Test and the WHO AUDIT Core for alcohol abuse. The final diagnoses were made according to DSM-III-R diagnostic criteria. The findings indicated that CHI patients suffered more psychiatric consequences than FLLI controls (OR = 4.07; 95% CI = 1.30:13.14; p = 0.013). Depression and anxiety disorders were the most co

The validity of the Bender-Gestalt emotional indicators.

We evaluated the concurrent validity of the revised Bender-Gestalt emotional indicators (Koppitz, 1975) among three groups of children in the 7- to 10-year age range: adjustment disorder, behavior disorder, and normal control. The concurrent validity of the emotional indicators total score was demonstrated. Notably, with the developmental level controlled, both clinical groups produced significantly more emotional indicators than the control group, although the two clinical groups could not be differentiated. Nominal-data analyses of the 13 individual emotional indicators indicated that three
